The consultation company just approved by a San Diego council committee for services on the pier expects to have construction begin on the new pier by 2026.

Moffatt & Nichol was approved Wednesday, Sept. 14, by the council’s transportation and infrastructure committee for additional services needed for the OB Pier improvement project.

And Moffatt & Nichol expect to begin an evaluation of the pier this year and to have construction begin on the new pier by 2026. The cost ranges from $40-$60 million with a life expectancy of 50 to 75 years.

The San Diego Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has issued a blistering critique of the design process for OB’s new, expanded library. The new design will be on display at tonight’s OB Planning Board meeting.

In undated letters to Mayor Gloria, Councilmember Campbell, and other officials, the architects claimed there was a “flawed design process and substandard outcome” for the new plans, and that “The community deserves better; it deserves well-designed civic assets that will endure the test of time.”

The water at Ocean Beach’s Dog Beach reopened to the public after being closed since Thursday due to a sewage spill, according to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality.

The spill occurred upstream in the San Diego River and raised bacteria levels to an amount that exceeded state health standards.

As of this writing, neighbors on the 4600 block of Long Branch Avenue report that city crews are currently beginning to remove the dead Torrey Pine on that block.

It could take the crew a couple of days.

Well-known OBcean Mike James is at it again. The man who once convinced the OB Merchants Association back in the 1980s to bring back fireworks on July 4th at the pier, is now moving on finding alternatives to the annual event.

Mike – and others – have organized a community meeting for this Thursday, August 25 at the Newbreak Church on Ebers. To look at options for Ocean Beach, recognizing that the beloved pier can no longer stage fireworks.

A steering committed has been formed, currently headed by Mike James and Tricia Tellier Gaut.

Our Third Summer Appeal for Donations During the Pandemic

Today begins the OB Rag‘s third Pandemic Annual Summer Fundraiser!

We hold one fundraiser a year these days, usually in August. This week our goal is to reach $2,000 in donations and contributions from our readers and supporters. While we do provide local OB and Point Loma news and a discussion platform that is unrivaled among local news websites, we also do stand for something.

Andrea Schlageter, Chair of San Diego’s volunteer Community Planners Committee, has alerted her fellow planners of Mayor Todd Gloria’s plan to issue a second housing “package.”

In a brief email to planners (reprinted here with her permission) Schlageter states, “… there is something I would like everyone to keep at top of mind. Early next year the Mayor is planning on pursuing a second housing action package. As of right now there are no firm policies, but there are goals and rough ideas which you can review …” (Andrea provided a link to Gloria’s city website).

Planning for long-term project to be led by task force of locals and city staff

The City of San Diego has just announced it will replace the Ocean Beach Pier.

Planning for what will be an expensive and long-term project will be advised by a task force made up nominated local OBceans and city staff.

James Nagelvoort, director for the Strategic Capital Projects Department, made this announcement:

Tonight, Wednesday, August 3, the Ocean Beach Planning Board will hold its monthly meeting. The Board is holding in-person meetings and are back at their normal site, the OB Recreation Center at 4726 Santa Monica. They meet at 6pm.

Vice-chair Kevin Hastings will give an update on the status of the ongoing coastal access projects.
