ON Thursday, October 20, residents from OB, Point Loma, Pacific Beach and La Jolla rallied in front of the Capri-by-the Sea 14 story building in celebration of the 30-foot height limit and to oppose Measure C.

Speakers included Geoff Page, former Calif Assemblywoman Lori Saldana, Scott Chipman of Save PB, Lin Manning of “No on C” and Mandy Havlik.

It’s the 46-year-old annual San Diego “Orchids and Onions” competition and OB’s roundabout won an award.

Trophies are handed out by the San Diego Architectural Foundation for the region’s best and worst architecture, making it one of “the closest-watched local events.”

It’s unique for an architecture organization to acknowledge bad work because a lot of the judges work in the industry and could hurt potential clients’ feelings with any type of demerit. However, San Diego Architectural Foundation still pushes forward with its popular competition every year.

Come join neighbors, other residents of the beaches and across San Diego to celebrate the wonders of the half-century old 30-foot height limit and to oppose Measure C on November’s ballot. A rally and press conference will be held in PB on Thursday, October 20 at 11 am.

Measure C is the greatest threat to the height limit in 50 years. If passed, it would wipe out the height limit in the Midway planning area — a coastal wetlands area.

Helen Fricker is a geophysicist at UC San Diego who studies ice sheets such as the ones in Greenland and Antarctica. Back in August, she stated:

“The amount by which the ice is being added to the ocean is increasing. And we know that from satellite monitoring as well. What we are seeing is we’re actually tracking the high end of the worst case scenario of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) projections.”

Residents of San Diego will see the effects of rising sea levels in their lifetimes, as coastal flooding becomes more frequent and longer in duration, she said. Fricker pointed out that some low-lying areas will soon be underwater, specifically the area around San Diego’s Sports Arena, known as the Midway District.

In the midst of a fentanyl epidemic in San Diego, an Ocean Beach man was sentenced recently to 150 months – or 12 1/2 years – for selling fentanyl to another Ocean Beach man who died of an overdose in 2020.

Anthony Souza, 47, was sentenced to federal prison by U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel for causing the death of Chad Stevens, 28, who worked for two years at the Wonderland Ocean Pub, a well-known OB restaurant.

Join neighbors and other residents Thursday, October 6 at the OB Pier to both celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 30-foot height limit and to say “No” to Measure C. At 11 am, there will be a rally and press conference by the new group Keep the Coast 30.

Keep the Coast 30 plans on a series of celebrations and press conferences throughout October to remind San Diegans about the historic vote taken a half century ago that established the 30-foot height limit west of I-5.

The Midway-Pacific Highway Community Planning Group’s regular monthly meeting Wednesday, September 21, once again called into question why this group exists. The agenda was filled with only informational items and no action items at all. Action items for this group are very rare. Public information about the group is almost impossible to find.

Vacancies on the group are chronic. There are three right now. They petitioned the city to allow them to have fewer members because it has been so hard to fill the seats. There is no listing of current members anywhere. Most of the members are either property owners or business owners in the area along with a couple of residents who rent.

Join other San Diegans in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the 30-foot coastal height limit.

In November of 1972, 63% of voters throughout San Diego voted to pass the citizen initiative, Proposition D, designed to protect the coast from rampant high-rise development like what you see in the attached photo of Miami Beach.

Prop D has protected our precious coastline admirably for 50 years despite continued assaults by the development industry. But, today, this hard-won protection is facing perhaps the most serious assault by the city and the development industry using the red herring of affordable housing.

The Ocean Beach Planning Board meets Wednesday night at 6pm — and they’re back at the OB Rec Center, 4726 Santa Monica.

The Board will review a “granny flat” application for 4733 Saratoga Ave, hear a city presentation on organic waste recycling and discuss next year’s city budget priorities for OB.

Rachel Laing, director of communications for the City of San Diego and Mayor Gloria’s top PR person, took a swipe yesterday at Editordude of the OB Rag, Frank Gormlie.

In a discussion of local journalists on her tweeter account, Laing took a shot at Gormlie — for some reason.

The ad hoc group of local residents who formed recently to campaign for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the passage of the 30 foot height limit, has just launched their website.

It’s at keepthecoast30.org and is in its beginning stages of having material and news. One of their slogans is:
