By Michael Moore and Oliver Stone / New York Times / August 20, 2012

WE have spent our careers as filmmakers making the case that the news media in the United States often fail to inform Americans about the uglier actions of our own government. We therefore have been deeply grateful for the accomplishments of WikiLeaks, and applaud Ecuador’s decision to grant diplomatic asylum to its founder, Julian Assange, who is now living in the Ecuadorean Embassy in London.

Ecuador has acted in accordance with important principles of international human rights.

What’s Going on at Ft. Rosecrans Now? Its Watering Schedule Out of Sync

Judi Curry  August 21, 2012  3 Comments on What’s Going on at Ft. Rosecrans Now? Its Watering Schedule Out of Sync

Three of my widow support group have husbands buried at Ft. Rosecrans cemetery. A fourth one has a fiancé buried there also. All of our men are in very close proximity to each other – probably because they all passed away at just about the same time.

Three of us try to visit our husbands once a month, if for no other reason than to make sure they are still there. I usually use the time to berate him for leaving me. Sometimes I bring flowers from our garden; sometimes one of the other women bring a sticker to put on the plaques – a forbidden practice but we do it anyway; sometimes we bring individual windmills to stick in the rocks below the walls that hold their remains.

Matt Brooks describes the mission of the Republican Jewish Coalition as educating the Jewish community about critical domestic and foreign policy issues.

But the well-dressed crowd that gathered in May for a luncheon on the 24th floor of a New York law firm easily could have figured that the group had a different purpose: Helping Mitt Romney win the presidency.

Brooks, the group’s executive director, showed the 100 or so attendees two coalition-funded ads taking aim at President Barack Obama. Then Brooks made a pitch for a $6.5 million plan to help Romney in battleground states, reminding guests that their donations would not be publicly disclosed by the tax-exempt group.

Monsanto Gives $4.2 Million to Squash California GMO Labeling Initiative

Source  August 20, 2012  0 Comments on Monsanto Gives $4.2 Million to Squash California GMO Labeling Initiative

By Anthony Gucciardi / Natural Society / August 18, 2012

Monsanto is doing its absolute best to ensure that you do not know what you are putting into your mouth, now confirmed to have donated $4.2 million in an attempt to fight the California GMO labeling initiative that could very well put them out of business. You see, if people actually knew that they were consuming genetically modified ingredients, they would simply stop buying the engineered products on a massive scale. Monsanto simply cannot have that, which is why it is doing its best to squash any possibility of a successful labeling initiative (along with a conglomerate of corporate entities).

It is already well known that the general public is highly supportive of GMO labeling in general, with many polls finding that around 93% of the population is supportive of knowing what is in their food.

Field of View: OB Farmers Market

Annie Lane  August 20, 2012  1 Comment on Field of View: OB Farmers Market

I arrived at the Farmers Market in Ocean Beach a little late, but there was still plenty to see and taste. The sinking sun set Newport Avenue aglow, and there was quite the bustling of activity even as vendors slowly began to close up shop.

The Farmers Market runs from 4 to 8 p.m. during the summer and 4 to 7 p.m. during the winter every Wednesday. It takes place on Newport Avenue between Cable and Bacon streets.

The Loss of Public Space and Growth of Corporate State

Source  August 20, 2012  0 Comments on The Loss of Public Space and Growth of Corporate State

Elected officials continue to represent the special interest lobbyists padding their pockets rather than the constituents they are elected to represent. Here in Southern California, we are watching more of our public space be taken away and converted into Wal Marts, paid parking lots, and the like. While citizens work together and attend city council meetings to point out the protections that should preserve the space, corporations and politicians work together to bypass those protections.
