Sunset Cliffs meet and greet for Lori Saldaña for City Council 2022

The pickleball vs. tennis issue at Robb Field made its way to the Mission Bay Park Committee Tuesday night, April 5. Both sides presented their views to the often overlooked but powerful committee. Reportedly, dozens on each side were in attendance.

Years ago, Robb Field — a regional park — was removed from Ocean Beach and handed to Mission Bay, and is under the “governance” of the MBPC.

The pickleball community is trying to get dedicated pickleball courts at Robb Field and wants the 12 tennis courts to be converted. “We have no dedicated pickleball courts in the parks in San Diego proper,” Stephan Boyland told Fox5.

OB Rag reporter Geoff Page has confirmed that Evergreen Street in the neighborhood of Roseville in Point Loma has been marked up for what appears to be single-lane striping.

The special election to fill the remaining months of former Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez’s term will be decided in a runoff June 7.

David Alvarez led the field of three candidates with 38.42% of the vote, according to unofficial results released by the San Diego County Registrar of Voters Tuesday night which include all ballots cast at vote centers on Election Day. Georgette Gomez, a second Democrat who was also a San Diego City Council member, was second with 36.98% of the vote.

The City of San Diego is preparing to repair a large void under a pedestrian walkway at the end of the 5100 Block of Narragansett Avenue.

The project is west of the Silver Spray Apartments. The city plans to fill the void with concrete slurry and the placement of a 1’ x 3.5′ x 10′ terraced wall at void entrance where the steps washed away.

Technically, the city is going “for an After-the-Fact Site Development Permit and Coastal Development Permit” for the repairs. The large void is approximately 360 feet.

Members of the Point Loma community of Roseville have a new concern.

New strips have just appeared on Evergreen Street between Canon Street and Nimitz Boulevard and locals fear that a similar street lane debacle caused in Mira Mesa is coming to their neighborhood.

No one in the community has been informed, notified or educated on this new type of street striping.

And neither has the Peninsula Community Planning Board been notified. Board member Korla Eaquinta is requesting that a presentation by the city on the striping be made at the Board before any permanent painting of strips is made.

In Mira Mesa, the city had to apologize for its actions. At a community meeting hosted by the local town council, representatives from the San Diego Department of Transportation offered an apology.

Tentative Agreement Reached between UFCW and Albertsons/Vons/Pavilions and Ralphs

A tentative agreement was reached by the bargaining committee representing seven UFCW Locals across southern California and Albertsons, Vons, Pavilions, and Ralphs.

Once our members have had an opportunity to review and vote, we will release more information on this historic and transformational deal. Nothing is final until our members decide.

It has been some time since I ate at Cesarina’s. The pandemic, new restaurants opening, etc., but Steve and I had something to celebrate and I wanted to go to Cesarina’s for their octopus and other authentic Italian meals.

A great many of the their recipes come from Napoli, and each of my three daughters spent a year in that city and raved about the food so I wanted to try it out again and see if it was as good as it was three years ago. In case you don’t want to read any more of this review I can honestly say, “It is!”

On March 20, 2022, the joy of welcoming Spring with the scent of Wisteria was intoxicating.

After years of isolation, the long-awaited O.B. tradition of the Ocean Beach Historical Society (OBHS) Wisteria Garden Party was revived and turned into a blooming good time!

While setting up for the party, the forecast of rain put a damper on the Ocean Beach Historical Society event. Like previous parties, much luck, or wishes coming true, the clouds parted and ushered in a perfect day for the Wisteria Party. Luckily, years of rain dissipating before the party began prevailed yet another year.

The OB Planning Board meets this Wednesday, April 6 – and their meetings are still virtual and you need to pre-register here in order to participate. It starts at 6 pm.

The major presentation of the meeting will be from the city representatives on Mayor Gloria’s “Build Better San Diego.” (The OB Rag just posted an article about it – see here.)

Much of the meeting will be taken up with certifying the March election results, electing a new executive committee, and selecting members for the sub-committees.
