Grandson Steaks just opened in Liberty Station across from Con Pane where the Banyan Café and Wildflour used to be. Two weeks ago they had a steak dinner for four for $69. Not $69 per person, $69 for ALL FOUR diners. It was amazing. Yes, “was” is the key word because the same fabulous dinner has since gone up to $95 for four. Still not too bad but that’s how things are going now during the war.

So what does this feast look like? You get a pound and a half of sliced choice ribeye steak, along with a cup of fresh guacamole, a cup of their homemade birria, a cup of Adobada, a cup of refried beans, six tortillas, eight quesadillas, grilled onions and peppers and a couple of spicy sauces. Oh yes, and some bone marrow. It was awesome. You can even order an upgrade to “prime” beef for $20 more. (For $5 more per person it could be worth it. Our “choice” grade steak was fine by me but my husband thought the upgrade might be a little more tender.)

The City of San Diego’s Engineering and Capitol Project Department held a Community Informational Meeting on Tuesday the 12th of May at the Point Loma Hervey Branch Library (as an earlier article indicated) to introduce the public to the Sunset Cliffs Seawall Improvement Project.

Located on the western side of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, between Adair Street and Osprey Street, the project consists of constructing a new seawall between the two existing concrete seawalls near Spalding Point. In addition to the new seawall, the project also includes street resurfacing, curb ramp upgrades, and guardrail replacement to support safe and reliable access in the area.

Approximately 50 community members and several City staff and consultants attended. The meeting lasted 1.5 hours with a long question and answer period.

Kimberly Wender of Dokken Engineering presented the City’s project, and she and City of San Diego Program Manager Elizabeth Schroth-Nichols answered questions. The Geotechnical Engineer Matthew Martinez of GeoEngineers, and staff from Moffatt and Nichol were available for discussions before and after the meeting.

Do the people of San Diego need or want a new seawall at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park? Should we spend $32.59 million on such a project while city services are minimized or eliminated?

The city presented its plan for The Sunset Cliffs Seawall Improvement project to the public on Tuesday, May 12th at the Point Loma Library. The amount of information and detail provided was enough for a basic understanding of the project. Dozens of people attended, and at least as many questions were asked and answered.

The proposed seawall would fill the gap between two existing portions of seawall and is meant to protect a short stretch of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard between Adair and Osprey Streets.

The project would consist of a 205 foot length tie back wall and 130 feet of secant wall, for a total of 335 lineal feet. The current estimate of $32.59 million equates to a cost of nearly $100,000 per foot.

But rest assured, that figure does include a fresh coat of asphalt on the roadway between Adair and Osprey, plus our choice of cliff edge barrier – post and rail or post and chain.

Aside from the issue of money, there is a conflict on a deeper level.

Imagine this: It’s a hot August day in 2029 at Ocean Beach. The 72-degree water is filled with swimmers. Lifeguards perched inside the Santa Monica St. tower spot a distant swimmer, waving their arms in a frantic call for help.

A lifeguard rushes out of the tower to assist the swimmer, grabbing a float tank and fins before running to the water.

Before the lifeguard has a chance to put their fins on, a drone rises above the tower and propels straight for the drowning swimmer. Once overhead, the drone releases a flotation device, which the panicked swimmer immediately grabs onto. Meanwhile, the lifeguard dispatched is still swimming out through the breakers to the rescue.

Soon, this type of rescue could become a reality, that is, if three Point Loma High senior engineering students have their way.

High school students Noa McKinney, Elyjah Rodrigues, and Peter DeSalvo are now hard at work developing a working drone model as part of their senior project, under the tutelage of teacher J. Michael Tritchler.

This is a call for OBceans and Point Lomans to join their neighbors tonight at a presentation by the City of San Diego on a seawall project that could permanently harm Sunset Cliffs.

Question this project — and be prepared to ask ‘Why are we spending $32 Million on this project when the City is cutting library and rec center hours?’ And why is a project that began two years ago with less than an $8 million price tag, now up to $32 million?

The Schizophonics, Anthony Cullins, Slightly Stoopid and Tigers In Cairo took home top honors at the 35th annual San Diego Music Awards, which drew a sold-out crowd from the local music community on a cool Wednesday evening at Humphreys by the Bay.

Garage-rock trio the Schizophonics were named Artist of the Year. Fallbrook blues/soul artist Cullins won Album of the Year for “Inside Out & Backwards.” Ocean Beach reggae-rockers Slightly Stoopid won Song of the Year for “Step Into The Sun.” And postpunk band Tigers In Cairo was named Best New Artist.

Awards shows can be difficult propositions, and SDMA’s organizers should be commended for getting through an extensive program in three hours. In addition to handing out 28 awards, SDMA presented six performances by nominated artists, plus another by musicians from the educational nonprofit Young Lions Jazz Conservatory.

In the wake of a devastating proposed city budget, a citizen-led initiative to assist the city of San Diego meet its Mission Bay Park Master Plan began Wednesday.

The initiative invites locals to help steer the direction of the city’s largest aquatic park.

The Mission Bay Park Conservancy seeks to maintain city-owned structures around the bay, including the visitor’s center and 25 restrooms, which are at risk of seasonal closure as San Diego seeks to patch a more than $120 million hole in its Fiscal Year 2027 budget.

Additionally, 14 city jobs in the park would be eliminated under San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria’s proposed budget.

“This nonprofit is designed to be a community catalyst — bringing together public and private efforts to turn vision into action,” said Bradley Schnell, Mission Bay Park Conservancy founder and president.

The saga over a proposal to build a 136-unit accessory dwelling unit project in Pacific Beach continues.

Pacific Beach residents discovered public notices were placed near the parcels on Pacifica Drive and Chalcedony, indicating the property, referred to as Chalcifica, is in default and heads to auction on May 28 if developer SDRE does not catch up on the amount owed.

Opponents of the project should not get their hopes up.

The president of the development company that now owns the Chalcifica says the notices are part of a dispute with the lender.

“The foreclosure is without merit,” said Brian Doyle, president of Infill Innovation. Doyle says his company acquired ADU-developer SDRE in April 2026.

The City of San Diego is holding an informational meeting on Tuesday, May 12th about a proposed seawall along Sunset Cliffs. It will be held at the Point Loma Library from 5 to 7 p.m.
