Could October 2026 Be the Last Month of American Democracy?

We’re asking this outrageous question: could this month — October of 2026 — actually be the very last month of American democracy?

This is preposterous! How hyperbolic you yell back! What are you thinking!?

How could any intelligent American in our present day country even consider that after 250 years of democracy this particular month is the last one? This headline is just click-bait and whatever follows is really not worthy of my time and energy to even consider.

Um, okay. If you’re still here, perhaps curiosity has forced you to remain. Or maybe you are looking for a laugh, or another example of TDS — Trump Derangement Syndrome.

Yet, there is a growing gnawing in your conscience. You have enough of an understanding of what’s going on in America to know that this is not normal, this whole Trump affair has taken all of us down a dark tunnel and maybe, just maybe there is a kernel of truth in this question — whether this Halloween month is our last one where democracy still exists. And whether it will still exist after the dust and dirt from the mid-terms settle. Can we even consider what this means?

How could a country with such an experiment in democracy begun by our founding fathers and mothers a quarter of a millennium ago — bogged down with slavery and the mass extinction of native peoples — tested by our bloodiest war ever, the Civil War, tossed about by world wars and the wars of imperialism, by recessions and depressions, floods, earthquakes and wildfires, now still standing by all the reforms of the 20th century, be currently and fatally challenged by the worst and most corrupt and authoritarian president in our history?

How could we be in this place? How could this have happened despite all of our better angels guiding us out of the promise and morass of our history?

But that’s the whole point! This is where we’re at.

Due to all the threats and actions taken by Trump and all his allies they have brought us here.

And just where is that exactly?

We’re on the precipice of the one of the most dangerous moments in modern American history.

After reviewing a number of essays and articles about this moment, let’s do a summary.

Without going into details, here are a number of things that Trump has done or is threatening as outlined by observant pundits

  1. Sending troops, law enforcement and/ or ICE agents to the polls
  2. Seizing ballots and voting equipment
  3. Voter roll purges
  4. Pressuring Republicans to refuse to seat Democrats – this would take place on Jan. 3rd.
  5. Restricting mail voting — [Mostly resolved now]

Some or all of these tactics are already in motion.

6. Calling a “National Emergency” and/or declaring martial law because the Chinese, the Venezuelans or immigrants or the Democrats are accused of interfering with the election.

The red flags as to the dangers have been waving vigorously for some time now; Trump has created his own para-military force, the untrained but well-funded ICE that can kill American citizens with impunity; he and his sycophants have declared the real enemies are not only the press but the Democrats — those Marxists, communists and socialists; it’s clear that the Supreme Court has backed his authoritarianism in a number of key decisions; Hegsleth clearing out the military of many of the top flag generals and admirals — so as to leave no body of stature to contest the use of the military to cement what’s to come.

It’s also very clear that Trump knows he and his party will suffer a whopping, a shellacking like none before as a blue tsunami crashes down on the Republicans who have enabled Trump and all his neo-nazi tendencies. That is if the election and balloting are allowed to proceed and those newly-elected will be allowed to sit in the new Congress in early January of next year. Those are some big “if’s”.

The stage is set for a showdown.

One of the key things that has to happen right now is that Americans — our fellow citizens — acknowledge and recognize the dangers of this particular moment in our history. We’re in such a dire situation that frankly, the future of the nation is at stake. You’re heard many say that — and that’s why this month is one of particular concern.

The election in early November — just three weeks away — and the aftermath of the balloting — especially in California where we count every ballot by our 23 million voters — is being targeted by Trump already.

It is incredible how dangerous this moment is because if these tactics are used by Trump and his election deniers, squirreled away in very key roles and offices, can very well disrupt our continuum of the passing of power from one party to another, akin to what they did on that infamous January 6 riot where Trump and his army tried to stop the peaceful transfer of power —    but now much worse. He controls the army and the levers of federal governmental power, and he has filled their ranks with his partisans.

If we’re going to survive this harrowing period, then, we must first acknowledge the imminent dangers of where Trump has brought us — to the brink of the end of our democracy.

We need to stop thinking that mail-in ballots and in-person voting will proceed as per usual, as normal, and that to the victors belong the seats in Congress just waiting for them.

So, many of my friends and fellow citizens believe that the mid-term voting will change everything that there is really nothing to worry about. But what if it doesn’t come off? What if the balloting is prevented or disrupted?

Once a state county’s ballots are seized by law enforcement, ICE agents or the FBI, the crucial and needed chain-of-custody is broken and those ballots cannot be trusted. Only one state — say Georgia — has to have its election or even just one county election disrupted to throw the results of the entire voting process and results in an upheaval. Only one state — say California — has to have its mail-in ballots challenged that they’re thrown out to have the results of the entire election questioned.

This means that the month of November will not experience what we expect. That means there won’t be a new majority in the House to finally block Trump and force him and his minions to be accountable.

But …

If there is enough questioning of ballots, enough disruption of the process, you can bet that Americans won’t sit still. Those 8 to 10 million citizens who took to the streets during the last “No Kings Day” protests nation-wide will definitely not accept this disruption and they/ we will return to the streets. But it won’t be like the last “No Kings” peaceful events because there will be barricades and law enforcement and possibly the military in the streets to force everyone into submission.

Martial law is not pretty and most Americans have never really experienced it. No one really knows what its like; we don’t know; they don’t know. There are close to 100,000 polling sites across the country, and any such action or deployment is likely to impact more than a handful of them.

Of note, much of this is illegal. Armed federal officers are barred by law from being in or around polling places.

Many pundits who are likewise trying to warn Americans about these dangers point to a backup plan — the rush to courts by armfuls of lawyers with writs and briefs ready to challenge any deployment or disruption. Yet they fail to acknowledge that Trump and his election deniers could care less about what is legal or not; they’ll slither to do it anyway. Waiting until the disruption happens is too late if you’re planning a legal halt to what they’re doing. Really, when has Trump been bothered by what’s legal or not; he doesn’t believe in the Constitution — and neither do his Republican enablers in Congress.

Okay, once we acknowledge the dangerous moment we’re in, what next?

The next is preparation. Preparing ourselves mentally, emotionally, psychological for a fight. We’re going to have to fight to save our democracy. There’s some common sense rules here: have enough cash, postpone trips or vacations, check in and solidify your trusted inner networks, talk to family and friends about how things could drastically change over the next few weeks. Prepare for a fight.

This does not mean we all have to show up at the barricades — but enough of us must — to resist the Trump plan to ensure it doesn’t fully play out.

We will need to show up at all levels of democratic government, those governing circles that manage our cities, our counties and block them from operating. Seriously. If the election is disrupted and the results either are not allowed to be known fully or not able to be manifested, then we need all government to stop functioning. That means we show up — and remain so city and county governments are prevented from operating.

Like in other countries — we’ll need to occupy the seats of local power to stop them — and encircle places like the White House and Congress. The peoples of other countries do this, like Hungary, France, Spain, Thailand, India.

Trump by his actions and plans will be inciting violence and decent Americans will respond on all kinds of levels. Yet, ICE agents shoot Americans and even execute us on the streets with little provocation. What will they do when thousands, hundreds of thousands of Americans are confronting them? What will the thousands of members of the military do? They’ve all taken oaths to stand by the Constitution and disobey illegal orders. Yet, recently, 50,000 members of the military went to war with Iran — in an illegal war. That raises even more questions. Plus, how will thousands of members of all the law enforcement agencies across the country react?

In truth, Americans will not willingly go along with Trump’s descent into hell. For one, there’s plenty of veterans among us that will not let it happen. One incensed vet on his podcast angrily declares “If you want martial law, bring it the fuck on!” His belief is that there’s sufficient numbers of citizens and ex-vets who will physically resist martial law and its trappings.

This is the spirit. We cannot fear Trump or be afraid of these next few weeks and months. There’s many more of us than them. We will be ready for the fight. Even though, in truth, he is threatening civil war.

We’re not going to allow October 2026 to be the last month of democracy in America. Trump and his cronies need to be shown the dustbin of history. We need to show him what Americans do to would-be dictators. Many of us boomers had fathers who fought fascists of several strips and we’re just not going to allow it to happen here. Many of our youth took to the streets during Occupy Wallstreet, Black Lives Matter and No Kings and will resist Trump’s machinations of fascism.

It won’t be pretty. But …

We say, ‘Trump, if you want martial law, bring it on!’

  1. I stand with Frank and all the others who are convinced we are at a threshold of a precipice.
Be like the Albanians, I say. They revolted in huge numbers for days & weeks & months, so we ought to do the same. General Strike. We stop everything if the Trumpistas try to defeat the democratic process.
I’ll be at the front lines, wherever they are.
The Norte Americanos are way too comfortable, too complacent; they need to wake up & move into formation.

  2. I’ve had these same feelings since the start of the second term. People like those that Trump have surrounded himself with, they have the ability to learn from the mistakes of the first term & insurrection. These are not the same people that helped secure the eventual peaceful transfer of power that occurred in 2021. There is already talk of Speaker Johnson not seating the new Congress. The Heritage Foundation and Russell Vought spent years planning on how to get power and never relinquish it. Time will tell what exactly will happen, but I am preparing for the worst.
