Community Coalition Bulletin: This Week at City Hall — October 12-16

By Staff

The San Diego Community Coalition publishes this email bulletin to keep our members and the San Diego general public informed about important Council hearings and other city public meetings.

Tuesday, October 13: City Council, 2:00 p.m.

Agenda:

Item 330: 2020 SeaWorld Master Plan Update

Why it matters: SeaWorld has a history of forceful expansion (and not paying its rent on time). Major projects on the horizon include a 300-room hotel, a special events center, and marina expansion. The Planning Commission has recommended the update with a caveat: Phase out the controversial fireworks show in the next five years. Background:

Wednesday, October 14: Rules Committee, 9:00 a.m.

Agenda:

Item 3: Amendments to the Municipal Code to Expose Dark Money and Ban Shadow Campaigns

Why it matters: On the face of it, this late-entry item seems worthy. But it is being pushed by Sean Elo-Rivera, widely expected to run for mayor in 2028, and its ominous language about “wealthy and powerful special interest groups” raises questions about underlying motivations.

Wednesday, October 14: Public Safety Committee, 2:00 p.m.

Agenda:

Item 5: Proposed Response to Grand Jury Report – “Playing with Fire: The High Stakes of Low Inspection Completion”

Why it matters: The Independent Budget Analyst agrees with the Grand Jury on four points: the lack of published data reduces public awareness and support for the Fire Department; civilian inspectors could help ease staffing shortages; overtime and revised scheduling procedures are needed; firefighters should not be performing logistical scheduling and billing legwork.

Friday, October 16: Land Use and Housing Committee, 1:00 p.m. — Midway Rising Lease

Agenda:

Why it matters: This long-awaited special meeting will update the public on the City’s proposed terms for the Midway Rising lease. A thorough, independent review is imperative. The Union-Tribune’s summary of the proposed transaction raises more questions than it answers. San Diego cannot afford another real estate debacle.

In-person: Council, 202 C St.
