“Meet and Greet” Is Covered by Famous OB Rag Columnist

A “meet and greet” was held on Sunday, Oct. 13th, in Ocean Beach to introduce us to David Alvarez, a candidate running for the position of Mayor of San Diego.

It was the first time that many of the attendees had ever met Mr. Alvarez, and there was great interest from the over 50 people in attendance in what he had to say, how he said it, and what he sees for the future of San Diego. He gave willingly of his time, and spent almost three hours answering every question asked. It is interesting to note that at no time did he evade the questions, and from this observation was honest and sincere in what he said.

OB Doctor Jeoff Gordon to Close Practice After More than 40 Years at the Beach

Local doc leaves OB practice, but won’t stop helping those in need

By Matthew Wood

After more than three decades with a local practice, Dr. Jeoff Gordon is getting back to his roots.

He is retiring and will be closing his Ocean Beach Medical Group on Friday, October 18, ending a run of more than 15 years in OB and more than 40 in the beach area.

“I want to live a little bit of life,” he said. “I’ve got two kids and a dog and a pile of books I want to read.”

But the good doctor is far from done helping people. He will work part-time a few days a week at the Family Health Centers, an offshoot of a group he helped organize in the 1970s.

As the winds of change blow and howl at you door, you may be realizing the extent of your influence only at the very moment that it feels the most challenged by circumstance. Never mind those paltry winds; they’re always kicking up a ruckus. And never mind the heft of your own authority nor the degree to which it is threatened. The only questions that you need to be asking yourself this week are — What is right? What is good? What is fair? And what is just? So long as you hold these most noble aims in the forefront of your mind, you need not fear a thing, Aries.

Extreme Weather Watch: September 2013, Floods in Colorado and Mexico

Source  October 10, 2013  0 Comments on Extreme Weather Watch: September 2013, Floods in Colorado and Mexico

Boulder, CO –The rain began to fall on Monday, September 9. Experts would ultimately call it a 1,000-year rain and a 100-year flood. By Thursday September 12, Little James Creek began ripping buildings from their foundations and sending roofs plunging into basements. Roads were closed and still the rain kept coming.

In the city of Boulder, Boulder Creek was roaring at a rate of 3,104 cubic feet per second, according to Boulder police Chief Mark Beckner. Two days before, it had been flowing at a leisurely 54 cfs.

At 1:40 AM on Thursday University of Colorado officials issued a text alert ordering faculty and staff residents living in university housing near Boulder Creek to evacuate. Soon, CU and the Boulder Valley School District would both announce they were closing down.

The Espresso Pizza of Ocean Beach Changes Hands

The green sign on the glass door at Espresso Pizza said it all.”Under New Ownership”.

Arguably, the best pizza in all of Ocean Beach came out of the ovens at Espresso Pizza on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. For 35 years Teresita – the owner/ manager – ran the place, and her staff of chefs and cooks and servers were with her nearly that entire run.

Apparently, Teresita has retired and has sold the business to Chris Stavros, the owner of the Olive Tree Market – in the same building.

Poll: Bare Majority of Locals Support Ocean Beach Town Council’s Ban of July 4th Marshmallow Fight

Staff  October 9, 2013  9 Comments on Poll: Bare Majority of Locals Support Ocean Beach Town Council’s Ban of July 4th Marshmallow Fight

In the most recent poll at the OB Rag, a bare majority of local residents support the OB Town Council’s “ban” of the July 4th marshmallow wars. But nearly a third of locals said they disagreed with the move. Clearly this poll reflects a lack of community consensus on the marshmallow issue.

At their monthly public meeting on September 25th, the Board of the Town Council voted unanimously to “end” the marshmallow mess. (Here is the full text of the resolution.) The OB Rag criticized this action as overly-unilateral and called for the creation of a village task force and more of a consensus on the annual event – which everyone agrees is out of control.

Of the respondents who indicated they live either in OB or Point Loma, only 52% of the overall total of 120 respondents said they agreed with the Town Council.

Corky McMillan Co.s Secure $43 Million for Liberty Station Marketplace

Frank Gormlie  October 4, 2013  5 Comments on Corky McMillan Co.s Secure $43 Million for Liberty Station Marketplace

Working on behalf of The Corky McMillin Companies, a major national financial player called HFF (Holliday Fenoglio Fowler, L.P.) was able to secure the amount of $43 Million in financing for the Liberty Station Marketplace.

Everyone on the Peninsula is familiar with the Liberty Station Marketplace – it’s where Trader Joe’s and Vons have markets. It’s also where Rock Church is located. Plus much more.

Folks who love what’s going on at Liberty Station – the former Naval Training Center – like to site all the amenities in the area. The development has won awards. But it also has controversy.

Ocean Beach Land Speculator Makes Cool Half Mil in One Year by Flipping Apartments on Pt Loma Avenue

Frank Gormlie  September 27, 2013  43 Comments on Ocean Beach Land Speculator Makes Cool Half Mil in One Year by Flipping Apartments on Pt Loma Avenue

For some, the Great Recession has been a good deal. Just look at this land speculator who in a year’s time, made over a cool half million dollars by flipping apartments in Ocean Beach.

John Douglas Dudek bought 8 units in the 4700 block of Point Loma Avenue in September 2012 for $1.85 million. He just sold those same units for $2,384,200. That’s over half a million bucks in one year. Nice going for somebody who can afford that.

Isn’t it great to watch as Establishment types roll in the dough, while the rest of us working stiffs have trouble even making our rent or mortgage payments?

The property that has now been sold twice within a year is located at 4746-4756 1/2 Point Loma Ave (assessor’s parcel 448-351-06). It’s a single-story courtyard apartment that includes 8 two-bedroom and one-bath units – which are small, each with 672 square feet. There’s also 8 garages off the alley.
