SeaWorld San Diego has no fireworks scheduled on any night in 2026. The park’s nighttime calendar now runs on the 600-drone Ocean of Dreams show …, a change that comes out of a Clean Water Act lawsuit: SeaWorld sought the drone pilot while the case was pending, and the settlement signed in May requires it to pursue drones as a permanent replacement for fireworks. Last summer’s Enchanted Wonders was the final fireworks season, closing a run local reporting puts at nearly six decades.

What the Settlement Requires
San Diego Coastkeeper and the Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation (CERF) sued SeaWorld in March 2025 over repeated noncompliance with the park’s Clean Water Act fireworks permit, documenting plastic, foil, sharp wiring, and toxic metal residues recovered from Fiesta Island and the Mission Bay seabed. The settlement, announced May 20, 2026, requires SeaWorld to pursue drones as a permanent replacement for fireworks in good faith and to run more robust pollution prevention and cleanup for any fireworks it still shoots.
“This settlement, combined with SeaWorld’s move to drone shows, is exactly the outcome we were working toward,” said Phillip Musegaas, executive director of San Diego Coastkeeper. Sara Ochoa, programs director at CERF, called it “a win-win situation.”
The California Coastal Commission approved a one-year pilot on April 15, unanimously, allowing up to 110 drone light shows in place of the fireworks schedule. The park’s permit still allows a limited number of fireworks dates during the pilot year. It has scheduled none.
The Drone Rollout Is Already Chainwide
As we reported in June, all three US SeaWorld parks now run drone shows: Ocean of Dreams over Mission Bay nightly, the 400-drone Illuminight finale in San Antonio, and a new drone show inside Electric Ocean, Orlando’s summer nighttime event. Only San Diego’s change is tied to the litigation. The other two parks adopted the format with no legal requirement attached.
The format is also spreading outside the chain this summer: Hong Kong Disneyland debuted a drone-and-projection nighttime show in June, and Disney has run drone shows over Disney Springs, a format we discussed on Green Tagged when the Electrical Sky Parade launched at Disneyland Paris.
A Paris Heat Ban Grounded Fireworks, Not Drones
The clearest argument for the format change came from a different park earlier this month. When a heatwave pushed wildfire risk up in Seine-et-Marne, the prefecture banned pyrotechnics from July 10 through July 15, and Disneyland Paris (Marne-la-Vallée, France) stripped the fireworks from its nightly spectaculars Disney Tales of Magic and Disney Cascade of Lights and from its one-night Bastille Day production. The July 14 show ran anyway, as a roughly 10-minute drone-and-projection performance, because the ban that grounded the fireworks did not ground the drones.
Heat, fire risk, and a regional ban shut down the fireworks and left the drones flying. Drones carry their own wind limits and airspace approvals, but a drone show can be rescheduled, reprogrammed, and flown under restrictions that end a pyrotechnics program for the night.
Debris Litigation and Fire Bans Both Point Parks Toward Drones
Fireworks over water leave debris in the water, which is what the Mission Bay litigation documented. Fireworks over dry land carry fire risk, which is what grounded Paris. Drones do neither, and they give operators direct control over the performance itself. The settlement shows operators that shoot fireworks over water what litigation can require, and the Paris ban shows operators in wildfire-prone regions what a heat restriction can do to a pyrotechnics calendar. We expect drone shows to keep taking the fireworks slot in parks’ nighttime lineups.
