During the first Democratic debate, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) became the first major presidential candidate to say that he would support legalizing marijuana if given the chance. Asked whether he would support an upcoming ballot measure on legalization in Nevada, Sanders said:

“I suspect I would vote yes. And I would vote yes because I am seeing in this country too many lives being destroyed for non-violent offenses.

Time for another look at politics 2015.

No, no, no, don’t go back to Ultimate Fighting, or The Kardashians, or wondering whatever became of Justin Bieber, Justin Timberlake or that kid on Via Amnesia named Justin whose pants keep falling below his crack.

Forget the distractions for a moment and try to focus on wtf is going on.

Let’s look at the S-words, and the J-word.

One S-word is Sanders, short for Bernie Sanders. Another S-word is Socialist, that’s the elephant in the room. …

Oh yeah, there’s a J-word. What’s the J stand for? Just a minute, I gotta check a text coming in.

RCA-FILED-a2By Phillip Smith / AlterNet

The California Coalition for Cannabis Policy Reform, also known as ReformCA, has filed a draft marijuana legalization initiative with state officials, the group announced Sunday.

The long-anticipated move means the campaign best-placed to bring legalization to the Golden State can finally get underway.

The Control, Regulate and Tax Cannabis Act of 2016 would allow people 21 and over to possess and cultivate limited amounts of marijuana and it would set up legal marijuana commerce overseen by a pair of new state agencies, the California Cannabis Commission and the Office of Cannabis Regulatory Affairs.

San Diego Democrats to Progressive Base: We’re Just Not That Into You

Last week over at the San Diego Union-Tribune, Logan Jenkins had some fun pondering what might happen if the “Dems go dark” this upcoming mayoral election. His conclusion? It would push Faulconer to the top-tier of Republican candidates for Governor in 2018:

And, it should be deduced, a cakewalk sweetens Faulconer’s prospects in Sacramento.

In 18 months or so, Republicans will be looking for a governor candidate who can appeal to Latinos and independents as well as the conservative base. The Democrats have a long electable bench. Republicans? Not so much.

If Faulconer is re-elected by a landslide in a major Democratic city, he’s going to rise to the top tier of the GOP’s A+ list.

OB Rag Poll: Toni Atkins vs Marty Block

Frank Gormlie  September 25, 2015  3 Comments on OB Rag Poll: Toni Atkins vs Marty Block

There’s been a simmering shift in the calm among San Diego Democrats. Two elected Democrats from our area in the California legislature – with very similar liberal voting records – are going up against each other for the 39th District State Senate seat in Sacramento.

Assemblywoman and Speaker of the Assembly Toni Atkins is challenging State Senator Marty Block for the seat he has held over the last 3 years. The election is in 2016. Ocean Beach and the Peninsula are included in the 39th District.

OB Town Council Elects New Board Members

Staff  September 22, 2015  0 Comments on OB Town Council Elects New Board Members

Members of the Ocean Beach Town Council just elected four brand new board members and returned another four to the board.

Eight seats were open and there were 11 candidates. Eligible OBTC members voted over a month’s time and for 8 candidates. On September 18th, the results of the election were made public, having been certified by the council’s election committee. It was an unusual situation, the OB Rag was told, as during most of the annual OBTC elections, there is no competition for the seats – as there was this time.

The brand new board members are Kameron Coleman, Keith Fink, Mel Roark, and Mark Winkie. Their first meeting as board members will take place on Tuesday, October 13.

Returned to the board are Jenn Avoledo, Marin Green, Gretchen Newsom, and Rebecca Taylor.

Last Month as John Kerry Called for “Genuine Democracy” in Cuba, Oligarchs Ruled U.S.

With Cuba and Cubans back in the news cycle – not only with the release of 3,522 prisoners from Cuban jails before the pope’s visit, but also with the first meeting of something called the Bilateral Commission last Friday, September 11th, I have an opening to comment on something that happened last month.

The Bilateral Commission was created August 14 during a visit to Havana by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry as he presided over the official reopening of the U.S. Embassy in Cuba, and the raising of the American flag for the first time since 1961.

No Differences Between Bernie and The Donald?

Ernie McCray  September 8, 2015  2 Comments on No Differences Between Bernie and The Donald?

By Ernie McCray

I’ve read comments somewhere out there in social media land that try to put Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders in the same bag as the perception that there isn’t much difference between democrats and republicans.

Well, I could take both sides of part of that argument but there’s a galaxy of separation between Bernie and The Donald. I mean one’s a progressive minded human being and the other is a narcissistic buffoon.

As to the clown, according to The Atlantic millions of people feel he is the best choice to lead America. Millions more “are motivated by giddyness at the chaotic spectacle of his success” which should involve, it seems to me, adding giddyness to the list of mental illnesses.

Tyranny of the Majority: The American Winner Take All System

John Lawrence  August 26, 2015  2 Comments on Tyranny of the Majority: The American Winner Take All System

Is it no wonder that among the 21 democracies in Western Europe and North America the US is next to last in voter turn-out?
tyranny of the majorityBy John Lawrence

A lot of people these days are concerned with getting the money out of politics.

That’s an admirable goal, but it doesn’t solve the problem that’s built right into the American political system: a voting system in which the majority rules and there is no minority representation because the winner takes all.

At every level the US is divided up into districts whether its state assembly and senatorial districts, US Congressional districts, San Diego city council districts or what have you. Citizens in a particular district can only vote for one candidate and the candidate with the most votes wins in that district.

Bernie Sanders, American Socialist

John Lawrence  August 24, 2015  1 Comment on Bernie Sanders, American Socialist

Bernie Sanders bnwBy John Lawrence

Bernie Sanders has been drawing huge crowds to his rallies. The American media cannot ignore that. But they will never use the S word to describe Bernie even though that is how he describes himself.

Bernie represents those who would tax Wall Street to preserve social security and a host of other common sense proposals. He dares to suggest that college should be free rather than the first stage of a life of indentured servitude and indebtedness.
