The father of a Point Loma teen severely injured in a hit-and-run incident led a “community-wide detective squad” to find and locate an Ocean Beach person suspected of causing the incident.

Tim Ash is the father of Alex who was wrapping up a ride on his E-bike on Catalina Blvd on a recent Friday night when he was hit by an SUV that then took off. Alex fractured his pelvis in 3 places and he had internal bleeding in his bladder which was life-threatening. After his son was injured and hospitalized Tim and other family members and friends went to work, in search of the SUV, believed to be a black Jeep Grand Cherokee.

There were two main items of interest at the Peninsula Community Planning Board’s regular monthly meeting, Thursday, May 18: traffic and cell towers.

The PCPB has resumed in-person meetings at the Point Loma/Hervey Library the third Thursday of each month. Zoom meetings have been discontinued.

The traffic issue on Voltaire drew a number of people to the meeting.

The Annual OB Kite Festival is this Saturday, May 20, at Robb Field. Plus there will be carnival and “Off” Street Fair of artisans, community booths, and food trucks.

It’s all from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (Robb Field is officially at 2525 Bacon Street in OB 92107.) For those coming for the kites – fly your newly made kite, or bring a kite from home and show it off. You can make and decorate your own, and there will be free materials, and instructions, and help with kite making.

Barry Bahrami, the man whose livestream caught two Navy ships nearly colliding in the San Diego Bay has been ordered to take the cameras down.

It was Bahrami’s video that showed the near collision of two Navy ships at the San Diego Bay back in November 2022, an incident commonly referred to as “Warship Chicken” which now stands at the center of a new controversy. The Navy Criminal Investigative Service says the camera’s livestream shows military activity in the area, but Bahrami calls, “bologna,” and that he has the right to film.

Is this guy an artist … or a vandal? Or a graffitist?

The individual was seen down at the cliffs between Del Monte Ave. and Narragansett Ave.

Most people would agree that weeds growing in pavement cracks are a pretty good indication that a street needs work. Weeds. That is what Bacon Street looks like today, has for some time, and will continue to look that way for the foreseeable future..

A major item on the agenda for the Ocean Beach Planning Board Wednesday night is the city’s proposal to install 2 roundabouts on Bacon Street, one at Voltaire and the other at Brighton. The board will review the proposal and make recommendations.

Another item is a review of the “Housing Action Packages Proposals” and recommendations from the Community Planners Committee (CPC) — the city-recognized body of community planning chairs.

The San Diego City Council will vote Tuesday, April 25th at 2 pm on an ordinance proposed by San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and City Council President Sean Elo-Rivera to provide protections to renters from eviction as long as they continue to pay rent and comply with their lease.

But opposition to the proposal is growing and residents are being rallied to call in or attend the meeting to show or voice issues they have with it.

Saturday, April 22nd is of course Earth Day and there’s a number of clean-ups and other events in and around Ocean Beach and Point Loma.

The OB Planning Board meets tonight, Wednesday, April 5, at 6 pm — and they’re back at the OB Rec Center, 4726 Santa Monica Ave.

Much of tonight’s agenda is focused on important internal board matters, like certifying the results of the March board election, electing a chair, vice-chair, treasurer and secretary, and appointing members to the 3 standing committees (Project Review – the vice-chair usually chairs this, Transportation and Parks).

SanDiegoVille, an online site, has reported that a new pizza restaurant will be replacing Mr. Moto Pizza House at 1929 Cable Street.

The city of San Diego’s ban on styrofoam went into place this past weekend. This styrofoam ban includes food containers that most restaurants use for take-out orders and utensils, egg cartons, and even meat trays.

It’s the city’s single-use plastic reduction ordinance going into effect. The law was delayed for 3-4 years by lawsuits from California grocers.

Retail stores can no longer sell these products, and residents can’t use them at city parks or beaches.
