Did Saldaña Get on Gloria’s Bad Side by Filing Ethics Complaint Against His Private ‘Todd Is Back’ Video?

May 31, 2022 by Source

By Geoff Page

A real effort is being expended to torpedo Lori Saldaña’s District 2 city council campaign by sending out hit piece mailers with information based on distortions and falsehoods. There are also emails going around. One is from Jennifer Campbell blasting Saldaña with – oddly – the exact same accusations as the mailers.

One has to wonder why such an effort against Saldaña. Is it just because she is testing well in the polls? Maybe one reason is that Saldaña may have offended Gloria because she did not appreciate the ridiculous video

Complaint Lodged Against Gil Cabrera for Violating Airport Authority Ethics Code by Accepting Improper Donations to His Attack Group

May 31, 2022 by Staff

Below is a copy of an anonymous ethics complaint against Gil Cabrera, chair of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority and the source of hit piece mailers against Lori Saldaña. It appears that it may have been generated by The Rag’s exposure of Cabrera as the source of the mailers, containing outright lies and distortions about Saldaña, that people are finding in their mailboxes.

The complaint alleges that Cabrera violated the Airport Authority’s Code of Ethics. The complaint says that Cabrera accepted contributions to Cabrera’s PAC from three people who do business with the airport.

As recently disclosed by Geoff Page here at the OB Rag and by U-T columnist Michael Smolens, a shadowy group called Community Voices San Diego has been mailing out hit pieces against Lori Saldaña and in support of the lone GOP candidate in the District 2 race, Linda Lukas.

Saldaña is perceived by many to be the main contender against fellow Democrat and incumbent Jen Campbell in the contest. Now, Matt Potter at San Diego Reader has informed us that Ryan Clumpner, a Republican political consultant, is the principal officer of Community Voices

How San Diego Secured its Water Supply, At a Cost

May 30, 2022 by Source

By Suman Naishadham?/ Washington Post – AP / May 29, 2022

As a worsening drought forces millions of Californians to face mandatory water restrictions, one corner of Southern California has largely shielded itself from supply-related woes: San Diego County.

For Western water planners, the path it took to get there serves either as a blueprint or a cautionary tale. Over the past three decades, San Diego County diversified its water supply,

PLHS Alum Pens ‘Pass Through’ On What It’s Like Growing Up Jewish in Point Loma

May 26, 2022 by Source

Stephen Fredman graduated from Point Loma High School in a large class of 900 students in 1966. I was there – that was my class too.

Like many alums, Stephen left this “waspish, uncool Navy town” and he ended up teaching modern American poetry and poetics at the University of Notre Dame for 37 years. He’s written a book of poetry, translated several works from Spanish, and authored five books of literary history and criticism. Now the local boy has published his latest work, Pass Through, and partially at least, it’s about growing Jewish in Point Loma.

Having a Good Cry with Nanci

May 26, 2022 by Ernie McCray

by Ernie McCray

Oh, what a world.
A world, that, too often,
seems like a nightmarish dream.
Makes me want to scream.
But there came a moment
when I turned my television on
and there, before me, stood Nanci Griffith
|singing “From a Distance,”
forever one of my favorite songs.

Mayor Gloria Behind Saldaña Attack Mailers

May 24, 2022 by Source

By Geoff Page

It is becoming increasingly clear that there is a concerted effort to torpedo Lori Saldaña’s campaign for the District 2 city council seat. And it appears that it is other Democrats, the mayor’s friends, who are behind it all.

A May 21 article in La Prensa about the 101 Ash Street debacle was an eyeopener for many reasons. The biggest bombshell was that the District 2 incumbent council member, Campbell, voted with the majority to approve purchasing the building. Campbell was previously opposed. La Prensa stated:

San Diego’s ‘No Fault’ Eviction Moratorium Now In Effect

May 23, 2022 by Staff

San Diego’s new eviction moratorium just went into effect Sunday, May 22, and is now the rule that prevents landlords from removing tenants for ‘no fault’ reasons. It applies to renters who are up-to-date on their rent payments and abiding by the terms of their leases.

With the moratorium in place, if a landlord or family member wants to move into the unit, they need to provide the tenant with 90 days-notice. If they want to take the property off the rental market, they now must provide six months-notice.

The ‘no fault’ eviction moratorium is set to expire September 30 — or 60 days after the pandemic state of emergency ends, whichever comes first.

A Video Ode to Jeff Stone

May 20, 2022 by Source

The video Ode to Jeff Stone is by Charles Landon with original music and lyrics by Phil Rockhold.

Jeff Stone adopted Ocean Beach in the late 1970s and he and his sweetheart Carole Landon raised their two sons, CJ and Cody from their house on Long Branch. Born on May 25, 1946, in New Jersey, Jeff passed on March 8.

Always the artist and intellectual, Jeff took on several personas during his OB life’s path: an oil painter, the drummer for the local punk band, “Bowling for Larva,” a photographer, a surfer, an Irish nationalist – but always the teacher. Jeff loved kids and he loved to teach them– which he did for decades. He constantly ran into former students as he moved about town and they always expressed their appreciation for him.

SDG&E Wants to Raise Its Rates Even More

May 20, 2022 by Source

San Diego Gas and Electric — which already charges its customers the highest electrical rate in the country — now wants to raise gas and electric bills even more — by almost 9 percent. This would begin in 2024 if state regulators authorize a proposed four-year spending plan submitted this week by the utility.

That means a typical residential customer would see their utility bills jump around $18 per month, according to the utility. (SDG&E defines “typical residential customer” as a user of 400 kwh hours of electricity and 24 therms of gas per month.)
