Once again, Surfrider Foundation San Diego and its partners are holding their “Morning After Mess” Beach Cleanup Series on Wednesday, July 5. For the Ocean Beach area, there are clean-ups planned at the OB Pier and at the Ocean Beach Dog Park Estuary from 8-11 a.m..

On Saturday, July 1, the City of San Diego will reopen the Ocean Beach Pier following a six-month closure to allow time for repairs to damage caused by powerful winter storms. The reopening comes ahead of the 57th anniversary of the pier’s grand opening on July 2, 1966, and just in time for the Fourth of July holiday.

PLNU Surf Team Wins National Championship

The Point Loma Nazarene University surf team took home the championship at the NSSA College Nationals Competition held on June 16-18. Their La Jolla competitor, UC San Diego, trailed behind with a fourth-place finish.

PLNU surfer Noah Kawaguchi was named the 2023 National College Men’s champion.

Every Thursday and Sunday our San Diego River Mouth Docents set up an informational booth and a spotting scope at the San Diego River Mouth, next to OB Dog Beach. The San Diego River Mouth is part of an Important Bird Area that features coastal wetland, sand dune, sage scrub, and mudflat habitats.

On Tuesday, June 20, 2023, the San Diego City Council voted 5-3 to uphold the historic designation of the old Mission Hills Branch Library, ending a long-simmering debate over the fate of the building.

The Library’s historical designation originated from a 2019 nomination by Mission Hills Heritage (MHH), a preservation advocacy group that aims to retain the historic resources of Mission Hills.

The Ocean Beach 4th of July Drone Light Show Is Just Around the Corner

On July 4, 2023:

  • Tune into LUMINOSITY Radio at 8:45 pm for Pre-Show
  • Drone Light Show Launches at 9:05 pm
  • Show will be viewable throughout Ocean Beach and Point Loma
  • Best viewing is recommended away from Ocean Beach Elementary School launch site.

The inaugural Ocean Beach Fourth of July Drone Light Show is just around the corner, and the LUMINOSITY Steering Committee is putting the final touches on the preparations.

Scheduled for Tuesday, July 4 at 9:00 pm, this pet-friendly event will feature a stunning display of 300 drones presented by Skyworx.

The show will take place directly over Ocean Beach Elementary School, with visibility expected throughout Ocean Beach and Point Loma. To make the most of the experience, spectators are advised to position themselves at a suitable distance from the school.
