At least one of the brand new 2 story condos within the Saratoga Street project at Abbott and Saratoga that just opened recently proves what gentrification in OB is all about.

Zillow is running an ad right now for one of those condos, letting a 3 bedroom rental go for just $9,500 a month.

What a steal!

Something hit this light pole – demolishing it over the Memorial Day weekend.

A reader who sent the photo stated:

A conversion van hit this light pole by the fire station around midnight and fled the scene. it is leaking oil and radiator fluid and probably has a big chunk of concrete in the front bumper.

In the most recent OB Rag poll on marijuana usage of our readers, 55% responded that they smoked it occasionally and up to one-third of our readers smoke pot on a daily basis.

The poll ran for about one week and was open to any and all of our readers. One hundred readers responded during that period. The poll was not scientific – but it does give us a view of the marijuana smoking habits of our readers.

We asked readers how often they smoked pot. 31% of the gross total answered that they smoke it on a daily basis. (Of those who actually responded to the question, the percentage of daily smokers goes up to at least one out of 3 respondents.) Another 10% said they smoked weed at least once a week.

Last Sunday (May 17) on 60 Minutes, Scott Pelley summoned every hormone and nanoparticle in his body to reach that sweet spot where his voice can sound like a god’s and said:

“Time is the enemy of history.”

Say what? I mean… What?

At the end of a certain amount of time, say 60 minutes, history ceases to exist? Time wins and history loses? Does history end when Scott Pelley runs out of time?

Looking up at the still, lingering morning stars from the best stargazing location in the world early on the third day since my arrival at the occupation on Mauna Kea, my personal velocities catch up with me and I listen. I stand at 9,200 feet above sea level.

OB is getting a bunch of new, modern street lights. And to top it off, they have cell phone antennas inside them. How great is that!

Ran into a work crew from Perry’s Electric yesterday on Newport Avenue. They were finishing up with the cementing of the base for a new light right in front of Cheswick’s. The new light has the antenna inside the pole itself. Their trucks and equipment took up a good portion of the block. But they were fast.

I spoke to the foreman of the crew, who told me that they’re installing 7 new lights from Sunset Cliffs to Newport.

Other cities have sued over PCB pollution, but San Diego’s case is unique.

In a 1970 internal memo, agrochemical giant Monsanto alerted its development committee to a problem: Polychlorinated Biphenyls — known as PCBs — had been shown to be a highly toxic pollutant.

PCBs — sold under the common name Aroclor — were also huge business, raking in some $10 million in profits.

The Irish Republican Movement has been struggling for a socialist free Ireland since the first uprising against the British in 1916 led by Michael Collins. Most Americans have a very naive idea at best and ignorant, uninformed at worst, attitude about the IRA or any of the nationalist parties that favor expelling the British and restoring Northern Ireland to the Republic of Ireland.

Some Point Loma residents who’ve been pushing for changes to the intersection of Canon and Catalina expect a showdown with city planners at tonight’s Peninsula Community Planning Board meeting.

This all follows a fatal accident at that intersection and its crosswalk where a 7-month-old girl was killed back in March.

Residents of the area have known about the dangers latent at that junction and have lobbied city planners with a proposal to redesign the intersection into a residents-only street. Planners have told them that this will take years and only wish to make minor adjustments. The residents believe this is what planners will say tonight at the meeting, and have urged their neighbors and supporters to attend the Point Loma planners’ meeting.

Three restaurants in Ocean Beach have joined a city-wide campaign against plastic containers.

The Lazy Hummingbird Cafe, Raglan Public House and Wonderland Ocean Pub are part of the campaign that has at the moment 16 San Diego restaurants pledging to eliminate plastic containers in exchange for paper. Each one will have a special sticker outside their store to show they have made the switch.

The City of San Diego is gearing up against Monsanto, the giant corporate producer of such products as Roundup and the star of the GMO world. There is a lot going on in this town around Monsanto.

First, there is a march and rally scheduled for Saturday, May 23, 2015 starting at 10 a.m. in Balboa Park. Organizers expect a large turnout and heavy media coverage this year due to the World Health Organization announcement that Monsanto’s Roundup is carcinogenic.

Second, the City of San Diego and the San Diego Port District are suing Monsanto for polluting San Diego Bay with PCBs.
