Ocean Beach draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually, including many military families from all over San Diego. To honor those who have served our country throughout the years, a group of community organizations that include the nonprofit Ocean Beach Community Development Corp. (OBCDC), the Ocean Beach Town Council, OB Mainstreet Association, OB Planning Board, OB Woman’s Club, and The Peninsula Alliance have set out to build a brand-new Veterans Plaza that will
last as a place of respect and reverence for our military veterans.

The current Veteran’s Memorial Plaza at the foot of Newport Avenue and Abbott Street in Ocean Beach is in great disrepair.

Recently, Mignon Scherer, a good friend of mine from my past, has filled my thoughts because of the November election having Measure C on the ballot. The ballot measure triggers thoughts of Mignon because it threatens to do away with the 30 Foot Coastal Height Limit in the Midway District and Sports Arena public land.

On Thursday, October 6, the OB Rag made national news. The Guardian newspaper ran a long piece about the “escalating war between pickleball and tennis players” across America. It began:

There’s a storm brewing on the tennis courts of America. Admittedly a very middle class, middle-aged storm, but a storm nonetheless. On one side are the tennis players, with their eons of history, perfectly pressed shorts and thousands of dollars to spend on lessons. And on the other are the advocates for America’s fastest growing athletic pursuit: pickleball.

Marcus Boyd started Imperial Beach Copwatch with the intention of watching cops do their jobs. The purpose was to minimize aggressive behavior and thereby keep Imperial Beach’s streets safer. Since then he’s uploaded multiple videos, garnered media attention and is finalizing a tracking app for cop watchers everywhere.

He has also gathered support from the IB city council and city manager and is in a position to change the way IB polices their citizens.

Boyd has been a longtime IB resident and business owner. For decades he has immersed himself in local politics, volunteered at his child’s school, served on task forces and ran ballot measures. All to improve his community.

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the passage of Prop D, the 30-foot height limit, a group of San Diego residents has launched a campaign to honor the historic vote by urging fellow residents to vote against the greatest threat in half of century to the height limit – Measure “C” on the November ballot.

A press conference was held to announce the celebration and campaign.

Here are a few of the albums, some old and some new, that got my attention over the summer break.

1.“Black To The Future” – Sons of Kemet

Virulent and psychoactive,“Black to the Future” is a provocative experimental jazz album from British jazz band, Sons of Kemet. With the help of guests like Moor Mother and Joshua Idehen, Sons of Kemet fuse together a tight and tantric piece of experimental jazz that drives so hard into intricacy that it blurs the lines of structure and abstraction.

Friends and relatives of Steven Krueger will host a memorial Sand Sculpture Build on Sunday, October 9, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in his home community of Ocean Beach near the main lifeguard tower. Almost a year ago, on October 11, 2021, Krueger tragically lost his life when a plane crashed into his UPS truck in Santee. After a 30-year career, Krueger, was less than a year away from his planned retirement.

Join neighbors and other residents Thursday, October 6 at the OB Pier to both celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 30-foot height limit and to say “No” to Measure C. At 11 am, there will be a rally and press conference by the new group Keep the Coast 30.

Keep the Coast 30 plans on a series of celebrations and press conferences throughout October to remind San Diegans about the historic vote taken a half century ago that established the 30-foot height limit west of I-5.

Join the Ocean Beach MainStreet Association and celebrate the OB Oktoberfest while enjoying a bier with a view of the Pacific Ocean in the beer garden, artisan and food vendors on Veterans Plaza.
