Point Loma Nazarene University claims to be a sustainable campus, yet the inaccurate and outdated information found on their website is misleading to the reality of their efforts. The composting program has just begun making its way back since being shut down during COVID-19, according to Gustavo Bernal, assistant director of campus facilities. Staff workers in the university’s food establishments weren’t aware of the composting process and only a select few actually know where food waste ends up.

Short-Term Rentals Are Exacerbating Homelessness

Source  November 21, 2024  4 Comments on Short-Term Rentals Are Exacerbating Homelessness

By David Malcolm / Voice of San Diego / November 20, 2024

Short-term (vacation) rentals (STRs) are an innovation. Since VRBO and Airbnb came on the scene, this is a new sub-sector of the lodging industry, just as Uber and Lyft were a new sub-sector for the transportation industry.

Unintended consequences often accompany innovation, mostly during early adoption. STRs rely on existing homes and apartments. The more there are, the less housing there is for residential. As a result, rental prices can soar, sometimes pushing residents out of an area.

A Plea in a Poem From Mission Beach

By Co-Pilot

The City’s sea level plan, the final straw,
Mission Beach’s past, with its old law,|
Once limiting who could own a home,
Now diverse, an eclectic zone.

Six thousand strong, a varied crowd,
Students, pros, retired, proud.
But AirBnB came, took control,
Rentals surged, displaced lives, a toll.

On Tuesday, November 19, at the San Diego Union-Tribune, these were the first lines of the main article:

President-elect Donald Trump confirmed Monday that he intended to declare a national emergency and use the U.S. military in some form to assist in his plans for mass deportations of immigrants who do not have legal residency status.

Trump Did Not Win a Majority of the Vote

Source  November 20, 2024  4 Comments on Trump Did Not Win a Majority of the Vote

Donald Trump’s popular vote total has fallen below 50 percent, and his margin over Kamala Harris has narrowed considerably as all the votes are counted.

John Nichols / The Nation / November 20, 2024

Unfortunately, for the president-elect, the United States takes time to count 155 million votes—give or take a million—and the actual result will rob Trump of his bragging points.

Over the weekend, as California, Oregon, Washington, and other Western states moved closer to completing their counts, Trump’s percentage of the popular vote fell below 50 percent. And his margin of victory looks to be much smaller than initially anticipated.

We Have to Bask in the Joyful Moments

by Ernie McCray

As I surveyed a picture
taken at
my sister-in-law, Becky’s, 80th birthday party,
I couldn’t help but notice
how joyful she looked
all dressed in pink
and I began to think
that the way to survive the mess
our country is in
is by simply
enjoying to the fullest
the joyful moments we find ourselves in,
no matter how fleeting they might be
because these little breaks
will certainly be short-lived
in our reality
as a country,

La Playa Books: A Look Inside the Recently Renovated Bookstore

Source  November 20, 2024  0 Comments on La Playa Books: A Look Inside the Recently Renovated Bookstore

By Grace Chaves / The Point / Oct 23, 2024

Tucked away on the corner of Rosecrans Street is La Playa Books, a locally owned independent bookstore that sells new and used books, located only a mile and a half away from Point Loma Nazarene University. It’s not as big as Warwicks in La Jolla or as flashy as Bookstar in Loma Portal, but it’s a haven for writers, bibliophiles and college students.

After undergoing a major renovation in the spring, La Playa Books is back with a modern look. Before the renovation, the bookstore had hardly seen any updates since its opening in 1990.

‘Saying Good-Bye to Hugo’s Cocina’

Since I lost my eyesight in one eye, I have not been able to drive or go to the places I have always frequented before.  It goes without saying that I feel like I am missing a lot, and every now and then I venture to the telephone and call a restaurant (or delivery service) to have a meal delivered.

That was the case the other day, when I was craving Mexican food and decided to order from one of my favorite restaurants, HUGO’S COCINA.  It’s been months since I have had anything from there, but I did enjoy the new owners’ menu and food after Hugo left. I have ordered from other restaurants over the period of blindness, and have not had any trouble doing so.  When I went to the HUGO’S internet page, it gave me the opportunity to order from their menu and have delivery made.

As Gloria’s ‘Great Hope’ Measure E Fails, He Comes Under Intense Scrutiny to See What Funds He Uses to Finance the City Budget

Frank Gormlie  November 19, 2024  10 Comments on As Gloria’s ‘Great Hope’ Measure E Fails, He Comes Under Intense Scrutiny to See What Funds He Uses to Finance the City Budget

According to the latest numbers from the Registrar of Voters, Measure E has definitely failed. As of November 15, the ballot measure to raise the city’s sales tax to support infrastructure funding has been turned down by city voters.

Measure E, known as the San Diego Transaction and Use Tax, would have increased the tax on transactions in the city by 1%, bringing the total sales tax to 8.75%. The current rate in the city is 7.75%. It was very close with only 9,000 votes between the “no” vote and the “yes” vote.
