Ice Cream Review: Scoops of Ocean Beach UPDATED

By Steve O San Diego

After work the other day, I stopped by the newly opened Scoops of Ocean Beach on Newport Avenue just a handful of days into business and it’s already buzzing with energy. The spot, formerly an e-bike store, was packed, yet the line moved surprisingly fast.

Their menu features a mix of treats, including ice cream, sherbet,, milkshakes, crepes, açaí bowls, and a variety of coffee and teas.

I went for a warm, freshly made waffle cone and treated myself to a double scoop. On top: Blue Jasmine Passionfruit Swirl, a flavor that caught my attention with the blue color but I wasn’t totally sure I’d love. It also happened to be gluten-free. For the second scoop, I chose the classic Mint Chip, which was also gluten-free, though that wasn’t a deciding factor.

My backup plan, if the Blue Jasmine Passionfruit wasn’t my thing, was to knock that scoop off the cone and just enjoy the mint. But one taste in, and that plan disappeared. I was hooked. The floral flavors of jasmine paired with the tangy passionfruit were unexpectedly amazing. As for the Mint Chip? It was creamy, refreshing, and had thin, melt-in-your-mouth chocolate flakes. Both flavors were smooth, bold, and really balanced.

The waffle cone alone was a great treat in itself. Warm and freshly pressed, it was lightly crisp on the outside, soft inside, and carried that bakery scent. The whole thing felt like a little celebration in dessert form.

Curious about the backstory, I did a little digging. Turns out this Scoops of Ocean Beach is their third location. The original two shops are in La Jolla and called Scoops of La Jolla, and the whole thing started back in 2013. Their family had moved to the area and noticed a gap where there wasn’t a great place for families to gather and enjoy high-quality ice cream by the beach. That simple observation sparked the idea.

What makes the story even better is that the founder persuaded his son to leave a fast-paced life in San Francisco and return home to help bring the vision to life. They went all-in searching for truly special ice cream, something handcrafted, rich, and deeply satisfying.

That search led them to Van Leeuwen Ice Cream from New York, known for making their ice cream from scratch in Brooklyn. Their classic flavors are made with milk, cream, cane sugar, and egg yolks, while the vegan ones use ingredients like cashew milk, organic coconut milk, and cocoa butter. Whether dairy-based or vegan, it’s all crafted with serious flavor.

And now, they’ve brought that spirit to Ocean Beach, one scoop at a time. I can’t wait to try out their crepes.

  1. What are the prices like? This is something I mentioned back when the place was announced but hadn’t opened yet.

  2. To all those who wanted to know the prices, the Rag has now included a price list — inadvertedly excluded because the original photo was too blurry. It has been corrected, and now has been updated with the prices. Sorry for the lateness and confusion.

    1. Thanks for posting the menu and prices. I went by there yesterday afternoon, as well. Two scoops in a cup for $8.00 Coincidentally, Target is running a special on Breyer’s 1.5 qt buckets—-2 for $8, as well.

  3. Happy to see this – will give it a try this weekend. We recently tried the “Craft” creamery in PL and were extremely disappointed in the fact they were basically just upcharging for grocery store ice cream.
