A Plea in a Poem From Mission Beach

By Co-Pilot

The City’s sea level plan, the final straw,
Mission Beach’s past, with its old law,|
Once limiting who could own a home,
Now diverse, an eclectic zone.

Six thousand strong, a varied crowd,
Students, pros, retired, proud.
But AirBnB came, took control,
Rentals surged, displaced lives, a toll.

Airport noise, a new flight path,
Nighttime flights, disrupting our bath.
Revenue needs could break the curfew,
Sleepless nights, our worries renew.

Belmont Park, the sea wall stands,
Dunes protect, but not all lands.
An island surrounded, swamps encroach,
City’s plan leaves much reproach.

Please, dear City, hear our plea,
Is there a better plan for our community?

  1. Another poem – retrospective on Mission Beach

Wake up roaches on my chest
But living at the beach is the best
    Bike rides everywhere
Hobie cat hull in the air
    Floods come and go
    And so does Schlomo
    Before the ban
Mission Bay on the 4th was the plan
Natives and OG Zoners know why
San Diego beach life days are days gone by
Still better than elsewhere if you can afford it
But REITs, landlords, STRs own it
Maybe a flood would do the trick
Paying for costly repairs might make the overlords sick
Coastal lifers have heard this story before
Metro beach life roots out the poor
Hawaii, Indo, Costa Rica, even San Diego… a lush paradise
A dog eat dog world that is not so nice
Scraps are left for those born and raised there first
The incoming culture… some say is worse.
