Popaditch supporter also wants to cut OB Torrey Pines down

I wanted to share something with our readers about extremist views and how they manifest themselves in everyday life.

And I don’t want to appear to be picking on Nick Popaditch – the recently defeated Tea Party candidate who lost to Bob Filner in the 51st Congressional District. Just because he and his supporters engaged in some anti-Semitic shoving and violence at Election Central the other night does not mean that Popaditch himself is against nature.

November 5th is Guy Fawkes Day! Fawkes was caught, tried and then hung for his role in the “Gunpowder Plot” – a plan to blow up the House of Lords. In England, today Guy Fawkes’ execution is celebrated…

Another election has come and the 2010 elections are finally over. After a landslide victory in 2008 President Barack Obama, and the Democratic Party lost the House of Representatives, numerous congressional, governorships and almost the U.S. Senate. Principal reason for the defeat was the economic downturn, caused by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. For the burgeoning Chicano community …

Looking through the election ‘trick or treat’ bag for goodies …

Following in the spirit of Doug Porter’s efforts to find the silver linings in the dark clouds that enveloped the nation on Election Day, I perused the U-T this morning and went over the numbers. I wanted to find the goodies in the slack bag of ‘trick or treat’ candy we were handed on Tuesday.

Recap of “Terriers” Episode #3

Hi kids! Welcome to our third and much-delayed “Terriers” recap.

The series by now is really starting to take shape, and going forward focuses a little less on character development and more on the weekly plot, making me think my initial classification of the show as a soap opera might’ve been a bit dramatic. As other (professional) critics have decided, this is a show that can be picked up and watched one episode at a time, though the back story tying the series together is what turns the show into something I really want to watch. Some of the best dialogue I can remember seeing on TV and the occasional ‘hey, I hang out there!’ moments don’t hurt either.

The surf rolled into town on Tuesday, election day, and stayed with us over the last couple of days. At 4 pm it hit and on Wednesday morning it was a solid 8′ at the pier, so reports Jim Grant – who took these amazing photos. The cliffs had some bigger sets….

Jjim reported:

The buoy that USED to sit off the Ocean Beach Pier started to wash ashore this evening (Wednesday) at 5:30 or so….San Diego Life Guards went out and drug it in so that surfers would not get tangled up in the long rope that was attached to a V8 motor which acted as the anchor to the buoy !!! Pretty damm funny…………..

Was the election good for the fish?

The November 2 election gave control of the House of Representatives to the Republican Party and expanded their base in the Senate. It will also likely expand the partisan rancor of our dysfunctional political system that was mocked by the quarter million folks who turned out for Comedy Central’s Rally to Restore Sanity the weekend before the election.

But there’s nothing funny about the declining state of our public seas from over-exploitation and pollution.

“Terriers” – Episode 2 Recap

Dave Rice  November 3, 2010  4 Comments on “Terriers” – Episode 2 Recap

Welcome to week two of what looks to be, should it survive through the end of the season, the longest-running TV show set in Ocean Beach. I don’t think it’s going to overtake Almost Famous as the most prominent showcase of our town on film, but it’s still garnering some attention. Whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing, and whether we the townspeople as a whole benefit or suffer as a result is certainly debatable, but for right now I’m focusing this article series on the show itself, for those that would rather just catch Cliff’s Notes on the storyline.

A Look at Election Central 2010: Popaditch and supporters push victor Congressman Filner up against a wall.

Editor: Here is a repost from November 2010.

Tonight, as election returns were flowing into San Diego Election Central at Golden Hall, an ugly scene erupted when Popaditch supporters harassed Bob Filner, the Democratic Congressman. Filner had just won re-election against Popaditch in the 51st Congressional District.

Chanting aggressively and calling Filner names, a band of Popaditch supporters corralled Filner and a couple of staffers, in effect pushing the Congressmen and his party close to a wall at Golden Hall. The crowd of Popaditch supporters were chanting their candidate’s name, not in an excited, friendly manner, but in an aggressive, confrontational way.

The Politics (and Music) of Aspiration – Notes from the Rally to Restore Sanity

On November 1, the Monday after the “Rally to Restore Sanity” in Washington DC, I was still hanging around in the nation’s capital, digesting Jon Stewart’s closing remarks. I ended a call with a friend after talking about what had happened that weekend, and the woman seated at the table next to mine leaned over to chat.
