Attorney for WikiLeaks suspect says he’s seen no evidence on documents

The attorney for Army Pfc. Bradley Manning, the accused WikiLeaks leaker, says he doesn’t have any information indicating that Manning leaked tens of thousands of pages of documents on the Afghanistan war to the WikiLeaks website.

“I have not talked to my client about that. I have not seen anything, nor have I heard anything that would definitively tie him to that,” said attorney David Coombs in an exclusive interview with CNN.

Manning has not been charged with leaking those Afghanistan field reports, but U.S. military officials have told CNN that he is the prime suspect in that leak.

PEACE RANT: The peace movement needs to stand up and take some responsibility and some credit.

by Molly MacGuire
The peace movement of this past decade was George Bush’s tea parties.

Amidst the gnashing of teeth and stomping of feet by peace movement types – people like me – expressing our frustrations, distrust and exasperation over this whole change in Iraq, there is something that has to be brought up. Whether it’s just the appearance of the end of US combat after the 7 year war, or there has been a significant shift in American military power, there is something that I think has been overlooked.

Antiwar conference: US economy woes linked to foreign wars

Source  July 25, 2010  1 Comment on Antiwar conference: US economy woes linked to foreign wars

The Revolution will be televised — or, rather, streaming live online.

Antiwar demonstrations in the Vietnam era were a regular feature of the nightly network news on NBC, CBS and ABC.

Today, protests against the war in Afghanistan are just as likely to be online as on TV, and in the form of damning documents or videos shown on WikiLeaks.

And lacking a Sarah Palin or Glenn Beck — figures that have rallied the nation’s Tea Party movement — peace activists are taking a different tack. They are connecting the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and our sagging economy and poor jobs outlook.

Rep. Jerry Nadler: We Must End the War in Afghanistan Now

Source  July 13, 2010  4 Comments on Rep. Jerry Nadler: We Must End the War in Afghanistan Now

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) spoke out against the war in Afghanistan, and against the war’s funding, at a press conference of the Out of Afghanistan Congressional Caucus.

“Every dollar we spend in Afghanistan, every life we waste there, is a waste,” said Nadler. “An intelligent policy is not to try to remake a country that nobody since Genghis Khan has managed to conquer. What makes us think, what arrogance gives us the right to assume that we can succeed where the Moguls, the British, the Soviets, failed…..

More that we can’t forget

Shattered windows at Alexander Hall, Jackson State, May 14-15, 1970The shootings at Mississippi’s Jackson State University still linger in the shadow of Kent State. Less than two weeks after Kent, two black students were killed and 12 others wounded by state troopers on May 15, 1970.

The incident started after student demonstrators, protesting the Vietnam War and seeking more rights at the historically black college, responded to an order to disperse by throwing stones and bottles. It ended as police opened fire outside a women’s dormitory.

Phillip Gibbs, 21, a junior preparing for law school, who had a child and a pregnant wife, and James Earl Green, 17, a high school track star on his way home from his job at a grocery store, were killed.

Spring is here, but the endless, pointless wars grind on. U.S. troops are preparing for an offensive in Afghanistan ‘s Helmand province. As people lose their homes, their jobs, and struggle to make ends meet; as teachers are laid off and libraries are closed across America ; money gushes into the war and military budgets.

Left vs Right – Part Deux

Frank Gormlie  March 31, 2010  10 Comments on Left vs Right – Part Deux

In Part I, we saw how the terms “left” and “right” stem from the French Revolution, that during the early days of the revolt, French delegates met in the National Assembly chamber. Back then, the French delegates on the right-side of the chamber – hence the Right – wanted to keep the King and those on the left side – the Left – wanted him removed.

Ever since then, to be on the right means standing up for property rights, the status quo, and the powers that be. To be on the left means standing up for civil and social rights, for change, and for egalitarianism. Although, the terms are relative and are tied to their historical and societal context.

San Diegans and Americans across the country are showing that many of us have not forgotten there’s two wars going on at this minute. This is at a cost of $400,000,000 EACH DAY for these wars and occupations – while our schools decay, homes are foreclosed, healthcare costs choke families into bankruptcy, and workers go without jobs –

We’re showing up at anti-war actions coast to coast. Here in San Diego, there’s an entire afternoon devoted to showing we haven’t forgotten. There’s a Car Caravan here in San Diego from 3 to 5 pm, and rally from 1 to 3, bannering downtown, and an Arlington West. Read on.

I’m not sad to see the disbanding of police horse patrol as they were mainly used against demonstrators.

I know I will receive flak for this, but I for one, am not at all sorry to see the San Diego Police Department horse patrol disbanded and the horses sold due to budgetary reasons.

Why? Because the police horse patrol was mainly used for crowd control and was constantly used to intimidate peaceful demonstrators in San Diego over the years.

I know the horses are cute and every kid – including mine when he was small -wants to pet them and every tourist wants to have their photo taken with them. The horses when they’re just standing there are cute.
