When President Donald Trump’s calliope of confusion is at its noisiest, we’ve learned a game is afoot in numerous places.  This particular game comes with a warning from a source who has a highly placed position in a large federal agency.

The source is named “S” and says an end-of-March announcement about moving the U.S. Forest Service out of Washington, D.C. is a foreshadowing of a massive reorganization effort of the federal government. The suggested agency suspected of being the next ordered to move will be the Bureau of Land Management, according to my source.

The overall goal, made in the name of efficiency, is to punish the cities and states that vote Democratic and reward Trump loyalists with jobs and money, says our source. By creating these new offices, away from D.C., there will be far less oversight, and far more access.

The source says that “as long as it’s a Republican town, they’re going to get an infusion of cash and jobs because their plan is to go out to isolated areas of the country so that they can do whatever they want.”

Postal Service Would Mail Ballots Only to Those on Official Voters List

President Donald Trump is again trying to exert control over American elections, signing an executive order Tuesday that aims to create federal lists of citizens and ask the U.S. Postal Service to transmit mail ballots to only those people.

The executive order, his second related to elections since he retook office last year, is sure to be quickly challenged in court. The U.S. Constitution gives states the power to set voting rules and administer their own elections, though Congress has the ability to set some regulations, too.

“That’s a big deal,” Trump said as he signed the order in the Oval Office, adding that he didn’t believe the courts could overturn it. “I think this will help a lot with elections. We’d like to have voter ID. We’d like to have proof of citizenship, and that’ll be another subject for another time. We’re working on that. You would think it’d be easy.”

California voters deserve to understand exactly what is happening.

Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, a Republican now running for governor, has launched an unprecedented law enforcement investigation into the November 2025 special election and seized roughly 650,000 ballots. The stated basis is alleged voter fraud — claims that have not been supported by verified data. California Attorney General Rob Bonta, citing Bianco’s own sworn statements, has argued the sheriff failed to establish probable cause to justify this action. Although a California court recently denied Bonta’s request to halt the ballot review, the underlying legal and constitutional concerns remain unresolved.

This should concern every voter, regardless of party.

A sheriff sworn to uphold the law has stepped into the election process, pursuing claims that do not withstand basic scrutiny. More troubling is the use of law enforcement authority to reach into the handling of ballots themselves. That is not routine policing. It is a direct intrusion into a system designed to be insulated from political pressure and protected by strict legal safeguards.

Ballots are not criminal evidence to be collected at will.

For much of the last decade, a steady, often robust flow of immigrants into the county has been critical to bolstering San Diego’s sometimes sluggish population growth as more and more locals packed their bags and moved to other parts of the country.

Not so anymore.

Newly released population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau reveal the dramatic demographic impacts of the current administration’s crackdown on immigration and deportations, which are now contributing to overall population declines and slowdowns across California and throughout the country.

Where a year earlier, San Diego County’s population grew by nearly 8,000 from July 1, 2023, to July 1, 2024 — thanks to a healthy influx of immigrants — it fell by nearly 5,300, to 3.28 million in 2025, reversing a post-pandemic rebound. The change is due almost entirely to the monumental shift in immigration policies last year that contributed to a stunning 65% drop in San Diego’s foreign arrivals — the single largest decline in 15 years.

Mandy Havlik currently serves as the First Vice Chair of the Peninsula Community Planning Board (PCPB). She is a proud spouse of a disabled Navy Combat Veteran, a mother of two, and an indigenous woman who is a registered member of the Timiskaming First Nation in Canada. Most recently, Mandy ran for City Council in District 2 in 2022 and is preparing to run again in 2026.

OB Rag Staff Report

Our “Follow the Money” series on the biggest contributors in city elections continues with this review of the latest figures from Campaign Disclosure Reports (Series 400) of two District 6 City Council candidates, incumbent Kent Lee and challenger Mark Powell.

These reports fulfill the Rag’s promise to “scrutinize the candidates in the 2026 primary: who they are, what they’ve done, what they say, and most importantly, where their money comes from.”

District 6 includes Kearny Mesa, Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Sorrento Valley, and University City.

Kent Lee

Lee is in first place in D6 fundraising totals with $60,633. That money includes the maximum $1,600 donation from 16 individuals, some of whom are listed below. According to the Voters’ Voice Initiatives, Lee has raised almost 9 times more money from outside D6 than from inside. His contributors include Rep. Scott Peters ($800), Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera ($320), and Supervisor Monica Montgomery-Steppe ($100)

Four leading candidates to represent areas including Clairemont and Point Loma on the San Diego City Council differ sharply in their experience, neighborhood involvement and how they would solve the city’s budget crisis.

Deputy City Attorney Nicole Crosby — who got key endorsements this week from the county Democratic Party and the city’s firefighters union — said she would bring strong institutional knowledge and deep community roots. Crosby, 46, has worked on housing issues for the city and has served on the Clairemont Town Council and as president of the parent-teacher association of Holmes Elementary, where her daughter goes to school.

Josh Coyne, who at the start of the year was leading in campaign fundraising, knows the district well as former policy director for termed-out incumbent Jennifer Campbell. Coyne, 46, now works for the Downtown San Diego Partnership merchants group. A Point Loma resident, Coyne says he would bring predictable leadership and reduce acrimony at City Hall.

Richard Bailey, a former two-term Republican mayor of Coronado who moved recently to Point Loma, says he would bring major change to City Hall, including with his plan to shrink and restructure city government. Bailey, 39, said he would provide the badly needed perspective of a small-business owner to the council, contending many of the city’s problems stem from having too many career politicians in charge.

Mandy Havlik, a Point Loma neighborhood leader, says she is the only candidate who has successfully fought City Hall and contends that she exemplifies what standing up for your neighborhood means. Havlik, 44, helped overturn a ballot measure that lifted the height limit in the Midway District around the sports arena. Since then, she’s broadened her focus to include infrastructure, environmental issues and e-bike safety.

8 to 9 Million Turn Out Nation-Wide

A record 94,000 people participated in 21 separate “No Kings” protests in San Diego County on Saturday, organizers said Sunday.

The events were part of a nationwide day of demonstrations against the Trump administration that organizers were calling the largest single-day pro-democracy turnout on record.

The local crowds surpassed the more than 80,000 who mobilized countywide in October 2025. The figures came from an independent analysis by Take Action San Diego, the same organization that provided independent crowd counts for both previous No Kings events in San Diego, organizers said in a statement Sunday.

“What a day! San Diegans from every neighborhood, every background, and every generation came together around one simple truth: There are no kings in America,” said Wendy Gelernter, lead downtown organizer for Take Action San Diego.

Trumper Sheriff Bianco Is a Republican Candidate for California Governor

A Republican sheriff running for governor of California has seized more than 650,000 ballots cast in last year’s redistricting referendum election, an alarming signal that the FBI’s recent conspiracy-fueled raid of a Georgia county election hub could be just the first in a new string of attacks on the results of past votes.

Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco announced Friday that his office had seized the ballots and would conduct its own hand count after receiving complaints about an alleged discrepancy of 45,000 votes in the Proposition 50 special election. That vote allowed California Democrats to redraw the state’s congressional map to wipe out President Donald Trump’s gerrymandering gains in Texas.

In recent weeks, the FBI has taken custody of ballots in Fulton County, Georgia, and subpoenaed records from Maricopa County, Arizona. In both cases, the focus was the 2020 presidential race.

But like in those cases, there are signs that Bianco’s challenge to the Prop 50 vote is also based on wrong or downright false information.

In statements to the Riverside County Board of Supervisors last month, county registrar Art Tinoco said the actual discrepancy between ballots cast and ballots counted was just 103 votes — roughly 0.016% of ballots. And the claim of a 45,000-vote discrepancy? It was based on misinterpretations of unprocessed, raw data, he said.

D2 Race Is On

What do you get when a French mime, an MBA student, a merchant marine and a former mayor walk into a community center in Clairemont?

That would be a League of Women Voters candidate forum, of course.

Seven people are running for the District 2 council seat, which includes Ocean Beach, Point Loma, Mission Beach and Clairemont.

Any District 2 voters looking for San Diego’s version of Zohran Mamdani didn’t find him at the forum, which happened earlier this month. The debate was dominated by reaction to new fees, homebuilding and what the candidates viewed as poor management by current city leaders.

Allow me to break out some lanes for you that appeared evident at the forum.
