Tripping Down Newport Ave in Ocean Beach – What’s New?

Every so often, the OB Rag publishes an update on what’s been happening on Newport Avenue, the main commercial street in Ocean Beach. What new businesses have opened up – and what places have closed down. The following is what we found, tripping down the Ave on Wednesday, November 16th.

New Velvet Hair Lounge

Barely 2 months since it’s been open, the Velvet Hair Lounge offers a bright, very clean-looking hair-cutting shop, sandwiched next to Stuff to Puff and the tire business on the corner of Newport and Cable Street. …

Not Much Happening at OBBean

Not too far away, the future OBBean store is still closed up, and no progress apparently can be seen from its outward front.

New Acupuncture and Massage Place Soon to Open

On the bright side, there is a new acupuncture and massage storefront which looks about to open its doors, where the old videogame store was.

Advancing Legal Medical Marijuana

Americans For Safe Access

California voters approved Proposition 64, the Control, Regulate and Tax Adult Use of Marijuana Act, by a vote of 56% to 44%. Voters in Maine, Massachusetts and Nevada also approved legalization measures. Medical cannabis had a big night, too. Voters approved or expanded medical cannabis laws in Florida, North Dakota, Arkansas and Montana.

Proposition 64 legalizes the adult use, possession and cultivation of cannabis for non-medical purposes in California. It also creates a process for licensing and regulating adult use businesses, including cultivators, product manufacturers and retailers by 2018.

Facebook’s Complicity in Trump’s New Order

In the 21st century world of social media as a source of news and information, the truth doesn’t seem to matter anymore. Tell a lie on Facebook and you’ll likely be rewarded with a large audience. Tell (for some) an unpleasant truth and the vigilantes of darkness will leverage their technical expertise to get an offending account expunged.

A made up story from a Macedonian site claiming Hillary Clinton had once said candidates like Donald Trump should run for office because they were honest and couldn’t be bought garnered more than twice the response (in a week) of the New York Times exclusive story (over a month period) revealing the GOP nominee declared a $916 million loss on his 1995 income tax returns.

Ocean Beach and Point Loma Voted Overwhelmingly for Clinton in Presidential Race

Here is a map of the 2016 Presidential race for Ocean Beach and Point Loma. (Go here for the overall inter-active map that displays the results of individual precincts.)

Usually OB goes a deep blue in elections, but it is unusual for Point Loma voters to vote Democratic – yet that is what happened.

Here are the sample precinct totals –

The large precinct in northwest OB (#235000) voted over 69% for Clinton and 21% for Trump, with 10% other, for a total of 454 votes cast. (This may not be a total-total as votes are still being counted.)

When writing a review of a restaurant, I frequently invite any of the readers of the review to join me when I do another one. Few people take me up on my offer, but today I had the most delightful lunch with Deb Greene, who did.

We chose Buona Forchetta because neither of us had been there and the reviews of others was intriguing. And it is always nice to step out of Ocean Beach every now and then.

We were greeted by a decidedly Italian waitress – Valentina – who hails from Lake Como in Italy. She has been here for about a year and a half and will be returning to Italy in a year or so.

We were presented with a huge menu, with 32 different kinds of pizza’s on it as well as Antipasto’s; Salads; Desserts; pasta’s and wines and beers. Additionally there was a large chalk board on the wall listing the specials of the day.

Anti-Trump Protests Have Exploded for 7 Straight Days Across America

It’s a reality that Donald Trump and all his transition team platoons cannot fathom, a reality that the mass corporate media disdains and a reality that drives Trump supporters crazy, but – there have been mass demonstrations and protests across the country every day and night since the election on Tuesday, November 8th, for 7 straight days.

Americans – mainly young people – have been in streets in all the major cities – including San Diego – and especially Los Angeles – Chicago, Oakland, New York City, Atlanta, Portland – and on college and high school campuses, in parks in small cities and towns.

Thousands. Tens of thousands. Across the country – on both coasts – in the heartland, in Trump territory – in all the urban metropolis. And it’s teenagers doing this, high school students, even middle-school students – many too young to have voted.

And they happened again today – Tuesday, November 15th. Take for example, this:

Point Loma Art Studio Teaches Pet Portraiture

Lovejoy Creations Art Studio Holds “Paint Your Pug” Sessions

Lovejoy is a local wildlife artist, muralist, and art teacher. The name she uses as an artist is simply Lovejoy, one word.

Six to eight times a month Lovejoy teaches a “Paint Your Pet” class. Many of these sessions are benefits for animal rescue groups – such as this past Sunday’s Pug Rescue of San Diego’s “Paint Your Pug” event. This sounded like a lot of fun to me, so I wandered over to 2690 Historic Decatur Road, suite #201, in Point Loma.

I was expecting a room full of dogs, canvases, paint, and people. I arrived to a quiet room of concentrating students being instructed and guided by Lovejoy.

Each painting was on a 11×14 canvas on an easel positioned beneath a small iPad, which featured a digital photo of each person’s pug (though some students decided to paint other pets besides their pugs). The digital photo was sent prior to class.

You can’t live in Ocean Beach/Pt Loma and not notice the continual work being done on the water pipes throughout the entire neighborhood. You can’t live in Ocean Beach/Pt. Loma and expect not to find detours where just yesterday you were able to drive right through.

You can’t live in Ocean Beach/Pt. Loma without noticing sand bags in front of drainage ditches on many of the residential streets of the area. And you can’t live in Ocean Beach/Pt Loma without noticing the huge amount of water cascading down the streets.

So is it a coincidence that many of us received water bills this week that were higher than any previous month? Is it any coincidence that those of us that have taken measures to reduce our water usage are appalled at the amount of our water bills for the months of September-November?

Holocaust Scholar Suspended from Teaching Job for Comparing Trump to Hitler

Glenn Beck, Louis C.K., Meg Whitman and Cher were all adamantly anti-Trump this election and quickly became some of the most notable to compare Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler.

But since Trump was elected, Mountain View High School history teacher Frank Navarro was placed on administrative leave for drawing the same parallels in the classroom. The California high school history teacher, also a Holocaust scholar, was asked to leave the school early, two days after election day.

New Poll: What Are You Going to Do Now that Trump is President-Elect?

Standing Rock Solidarity Action at San Diego Army Corps of Engineers – Tues., Nov. 15th

On Tuesday, November 15th, Native Americans, environmentalists, and nurses will stage a protest at the San Diego Army Corps of Engineers office as part of a national day of action calling on the Army Corps and President Obama to revoke permits for the Dakota Access Pipeline.

There will be speakers – including local Native American leaders who’ve traveled to Standing Rock – and music. Organizers will sign and deliver individual postcards to the Army Corps.

Long Approval Process for New Muni Code “Correction” on Point Loma Construction Will Allow Projects that Exceed Height Limits

Well, it appears what I suspected about the City’s eagerness to add language to the Municipal Code (MC), after the debacle on Emerson and Evergreen Streets in Roseville, is true. I objected to the new MC language that the City told everyone would “correct” the deficiency in the MC that allowed a 40-foot tall building.

My objection was that this was just a maneuver on the City’s part to avoid further litigation from other projects, that the language was redundant of what the MC already says. By adding this language, the City was able to set a future date, before which any affected projects would be exempt and that is exactly what the City has done.

You Want It Darker: Why Trump and What Next?

I spent the days after the election, one that I too had hoped and predicted that Clinton would win, mourning and comforting despairing friends, colleagues, and students afraid of what the future will bring.

Where I teach at San Diego City College, the majority of the students are part of the America that Trump hates. There is terror at the thought of family members being deported, unease at the prospect of discriminatory policies based on religion, race, gender, and sexuality, and fear of a cynical climate-denying opportunist bent on sealing the fate of the endangered natural world.

Protests Against Trump Presidency Continue for 3rd Night

Protests, vigils and rallies against the Trump presidency continued across the nation into the third night since his election Tuesday – up into the early hours Friday morning.

Nearly 230 Americans were arrested just last night, Thursday – with at least 185 in Los Angeles and 29 in Portland after police declared the demonstration there a “riot” using tear gas, pepper spray and rubber baton rounds to disperse the crowd – that had been estimated at 4,000 during an earlier march.

Thousands of protesters have surrounded Trump’s buildings in New York and Chicago, there have been freeway blockades, street take-overs, high-school walk-outs – …. Protests and marches occurred in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Denver, Minneapolis, Madison, Wisconsin’s capital, and Milwaukee, Columbus, Ohio, Baltimore, Dallas, Oakland, California, Richmond, along red states cities like Atlanta, Dallas, Omaha and Kansas City, Mo.

And Now It Begins – Hate-Crimes Explode Against People of Color After Trump’s Election

And now it begins. Hate crimes against people of color are exploding across the country – and in San Diego.

On Wednesday, the day after Trump’s election, a Muslim woman wearing a hijab was walking to her car in a parking structure at SDSU. Two males approached her, reportedly made anti-Muslim comments, grabbed her purse and backpack, and apparently stole her car. The suspects were described as a white man and a Latino male. KPBS

That same KPBS article included a reported about an incident up at UC San Diego at a bus stop, also on Wednesday, where someone had painted a swastika and “Heil Trump” on nearby concrete.

San Diego Democrats Dominate in Local Contests

San Diego Democrats came away with an impressive set of victories in the 2016 general elections, though you wouldn’t have known it from all the glum faces at election central on Tuesday night.

The implications of their party’s loss at the top of the ticket ruined the night for most folks. The question remaining now is how effective Democrats in San Diego and California will be in the face of a tidal wave of reaction coming out of Washington DC.

How bad is it? It’s so bad that Congressman Duncan Hunter, Jr has emerged as one of those being vetted for a position in Trump administration’s Department of Defense.

I’m taking reports about San Diego having one of the highest voter turnout rates in the nation (regardless, it was good) with a large grain of salt. The two paper ballots issued to voters because of the many contests may have caused some confusion with the Registrar of Voters.

From now on smart people will have to find some new ways to avoid the hoi polloi, the downward bound still clinging to their weekend Harleys and storing their AK 47’s in whatever closet they can afford to rent. We’ve watched our tepid and bland Democrats—the Susan Davis’s and Scott Peters—clapping and wiggling their asses to the tunes of corporate advisers for so long that we’ve failed to notice they look and sound just like Republicans.

They just wouldn’t go away, would they? They kept cloning themselves, and droning the same songs of the party of Jefferson. They were forced by political law to live in their districts but we didn’t know where they were, and we knew it wouldn’t be in their local offices. How many pieces of our minds were we unable to give them?

Who’d a thunk the Dems would die first? The Tea Party and the White Nationalists and the End Time Evangelicals were making war on The Blue-Suited Wall Streeters and Corporate Media, and so we thought the Republicans were killing themselves.

Nationally, it should be noted marijuana measures did well (except Arizona), as did minimum wage increases, and paid sick leave, along with reform-oriented local prosecutors.

The Night that Democracy Died in America

Sometime after 2 a.m. eastern standard time – in the middle of the late night, Hillary Clinton – who won the popular vote for President – phoned Donald Trump and made her concession. He had won the electoral vote.

In an historic rebellion of the white, working-class, half of American voters used democratic means to elect a man who does not understand the Constitution, who does not respect the Bill of Rights, and who does not believe in democracy.

It is an irony, then, that a radical regime was voted into power that represents the greatest threat in 40 years to what is left of American democracy. Words do matter. With the threats and promises made by our new President-elect over the course of the last year and a half, it’s clear that not since the time of Richard Nixon have the civil rights of Americans been so openly splayed out on the chopping block as they are now – or will be in a few months.
