Ever since I was a principal in San Ysidro and one of my teachers had a “tamale-making” party, I have been looking for tamales that were as good as the ones we made back then.  I think I have found them and you will never guess where.  But first, a little background.

I met Marissa several years ago when I placed my first order for tamales with her. 

Today’s San Diego Union-Tribune reports that there is a “troubling spike in coronavirus-positive hospital admissions among seniors in California, rising to levels not seen since the summer Omicron surge.

Hospitalizations have roughly tripled for Californians of most age groups since the autumn low. But the jump in seniors in need of hospital care has been particularly dramatic. Still, there is optimism that any winter surge will not be as bad as those of the last two years.

Rising hospitalization rates are a reason health officials are urging people, especially seniors, to get the updated COVID-19 booster shot and, if they test positive and are eligible, to access therapeutic drugs that probably will reduce the severity of any illness.

When it comes to the wacky and wonderful, nothing beats the Ocean Beach Holiday Parade with its VW hippie van convoy, young skateboarders gliding down a blue tarp “wave” and thousands of Obecians (and their dogs) lit up like Christmas trees.

Credit the Kazoos. Emcee Mike James, 66, retold the event’s origin story — how his late brother Rich in 1980 was looking for a way to bring the community together for the holidays.

OB Food & Toy Drive

During the week of December 12 — 17, volunteers from OB will conduct the annual OB Food & Toy Drive benefiting needy families and seniors throughout the Peninsula.

The main items of interest at the Peninsula Community Planning Board’s regular monthly meeting, Thursday, November 17, were traffic recommendations the PCPB is making to the city. These kinds of things usually prompt community interest because they affect driving on the peninsula. Of these, items 2, 3, and 5 involved the traffic recommendations.

Item #2 – Review request by neighbors to install a stop sign along Voltaire at Bolinas or Soto.

Public Service Announcement

Green waste bins are being prepared to be rolled out to homes across the city of San Diego as the Department of Environmental services starts up their green waste program. All organic and food waste products will no longer be slated for the grey trash bins, but they now will be placed in the green bins with yard clippings.

SOMETIMES PEOPLE ASK what I would propose as a fine coffeehouse. In case you don’t know, I’ve been in a few and have some preferences. One of them is to never under any circumstance have anything to do with running a coffeehouse; this is because I was imprisoned in a retail operation by family as a mere child and had enough of “serving the public” to last a lifetime. But I do have a few fond concepts and list them below. Add your own if you’re so inclined.

1. A coffeehouse should be big, with high ceilings, lots of windows that open, and preferred to sit on a corner. It should have decent parking and bike racks.

“Operation Higher Court” sent lobbyists to wine and dine Alito, Thomas and Scalia, while pushing right-wing positions.
