The Osprey Family of Ocean Beach

Dixon Guizot  May 7, 2009  9 Comments on The Osprey Family of Ocean Beach

Local birders have been flocking to Ocean Beach’s Robb Field in recent weeks. One big draw has been the osprey family that has nested atop one of the park’s light poles. This family of four includes a proud pair of parents and two chicks, who appear to be about 3/4 of the way to full size.

While I was filming the ospreys at Robb Field, “Dad” flew off toward the San Diego River at one point. A few minutes later, he came back with a large fish in his talons. …

Rock Paper Scissors back in the news?

Frank Gormlie  May 5, 2009  11 Comments on Rock Paper Scissors back in the news?

We have just heard from friends in the know that Rock Paper Scissors and its controversial closure is back in the news – sort of. The Reader, San Diego’s predominant weekly, is supposed to be carrying an article on it in its Thursday’s edition. Jeff Fagan, the original owner of the arts and crafts store, reportedly refused to be interviewed. …

An Arch to Build a Dream On

Walking down the long row of trailers, I wonder how I will recognize the one that belongs to Daniel Wallace and Judith May. They all look the same. As I near it, though, the ownership of the mobile home is made obvious by a preponderance of what their makers refer to as wobblies, wooden creatures, each with a name and a story. I should have known there would be something.

Today Is the 20th Anniversary of OB’s Green Store

Frank Gormlie  April 22, 2009  12 Comments on Today Is the 20th Anniversary of OB’s Green Store

Twenty years ago today, Colleen Dietzel and Kip Kruegar and other local environmentalists opened The Green Store on Voltaire Street for the first time. It was Earth Day 1989 – April 22nd.

Ever since, the iconic ecology store has steadfastly held its ground, offering books, magazines, bumper stickers, buttons, posters and other green products and mementos, while also serving as an anti-corporate space, a meeting site for area groups, and the headquarters for any thing green in OB.

by Frank Gormlie

It was a hot Monday night in the gym of the Ocean Beach Rec Center. It was time for Mayor Jerry Sanders presentation of his proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2010. Patty and I had wanted to attend. Not that we’re accountants or really understand the City Budget, but we wanted to witness the event and see OB in action. We walked in just a few minutes late, and it had already started. No “OB Time” here.

The good news is the Pretenders scored 15 runs on 19 hits, and scored in each inning we played (5).

The bad news is the other team called in the score, as we had our first loss, 17 -15, with Tilted Sticks …

“America’s Finest?”

by Rhythm Rancher

I was reading the “Letters to the Editor” in the latest issue of City Beat this morning when I came across this letter from a fellow OBcean. While I believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, the fact that he’s a City of San Diego employee who “deals” with the homeless was sad to me to say the least.

April 14th, 2009, turned out to be our best day ever – in terms of visits – since we began October 25, 2007.

We registered 660 “unique visitors” during the 24 hour period represented by April 14th. We had been cruising at 350 to 500+ visitors a day for weeks, then it just took off.

“It’s great that you heard us about our library, Mayor Sanders, just don’t pit us against the unions.”

As expected, Mayor Jerry Sanders held a press conference this morning in front of the Ocean Beach library. And as expected, Mayor Sanders announced that in his new city budget proposal, no libraries or library services will be cut for this year’s budget.

“We heard you, Ocean Beach,” the Mayor said. “There will be no library cuts.” The crowd applauded.
