Finding the “God of the Dental Chair” Right Here in Ocean Beach

Judi Curry  October 30, 2012  12 Comments on Finding the “God of the Dental Chair” Right Here in Ocean Beach

Where Have You Been All My Life?

I think I have died and gone to heaven. Or someplace I never expected to be found in. I am walking around in a daze, with a smile on my face, and wondering how this wonderful man came into my life.

Oh no, no! This is not a result from my on-line dating. This is the result of a life-long fear perpetuated by my mother. When I was a little girl, she always told me that if I was a “bad girl” she would send me to her sister Mitzi because Mitzi worked for a dentist! “And you know that dentists can hurt people, Judi.”

We Lost a “Mover and Shaker” of Point Loma – Nancy E. Miller

Judi Curry  October 26, 2012  0 Comments on We Lost a “Mover and Shaker” of Point Loma – Nancy E. Miller

We’ve lost a long-time “mover and shaker” of Point Loma with the recent passing of Nancy Miller (Wilberg).

Nancy will be remembered as a long-time – over half a century – local Peninsula Democratic Party activist and an early supporter of marriage equality. She was a member of both the Point Loma Democratic Club and San Diego County’s Democratic Central Committee for over 50 years. She served two terms as the president of the Point Loma dems, and as vice-chair for the county-wide dems.

As a party activist, Nancy attended over 20 state conventions, and in recognition of her service to the San Diego Democratic Party she received that organization’s highest honor, the “1996 Henry Auerback Award.” Former Assemblywoman Lori Saldana was quoted in the U-T San Diego obituary for Miller, that “Nancy hosted many Democratic Club meeting at her home on Niagara Avenue.”

OB Bus Riders of No. 35 – Be Aware

Judi Curry  October 23, 2012  1 Comment on OB Bus Riders of No. 35 – Be Aware

They did it again!

Without any warning, the No. 35 bus has had its route changed.

Two of my foreign exchange students who live with me waiting for the bus at Sunset Cliffs and Pt. Loma Avenue were informed by another passenger that due to construction on Sunset Cliffs, the “new” bus stop would be at Cable and Del Mar beginning Monday, Oct. 22nd (the day this was written)!

“The Power was Overwhelming” at Women’s Fundraiser for Bob Filner

Judi Curry  October 18, 2012  5 Comments on “The Power was Overwhelming” at Women’s Fundraiser for Bob Filner

A new young couple moved into our neighborhood in south Ocean Beach two years ago and over that time I have had conversations with them. I worked with Heather and taught her to make jam; I called on Mark to help with a few heavy things that needed to be done around the house; I fed their dog treats when Buddy and I take walks together.

So, I was thrilled when she called me and asked if I would like to go the “Women for Filner” fundraiser at the University Club on Wednesday, October 17th. Although there was a $100 donation, (which I could not make) I am not sure how Heather worked it so that I could attend, but attend I did, and had a great evening.

The power in that room was overwhelming. So many of the “big guns (gunnettes?) of the San Diego female world were in attendance

“What’s all the fuss about?” – A Restaurant Review of Slater’s 50/50 at Liberty Station

Slater’s 50/50

San Diego, 92106

I have to admit that while I was recuperating from “trigger finger” surgery the past few weeks, my life was relatively smooth with few, if any, angry people telling me that now that I have reached the 70+ mark my taste buds are numb; that I was really wrong about my review of their favorite restaurant; that maybe I should be doing something else than writing/reviewing/existing. The truth is that something was missing in my life; nothing to get overly excited about and I am thrilled to note here that within a few minutes after this article is published it will be like I was never away.

Ever since this restaurant opened I have wanted to try it out. Today was a perfect day, because on Wednesday my “widow support group” meets, either at someone’s home or at a diner. We have been together almost 3 years now, and definite likes and dislikes have manifested in our relationship to the point that we know each other well enough to know what they are thinking before it is ever voiced.

Have you missed Judi Curry’s bloggings? We have.

Judi writes the Widder Curry column and often does restaurant reviews and other musings of life here in OB and on the Peninsula. Yet she has not been filing any columns of late.

And there is a darn good reason why she’s not writing these days – she just had surgery on her left hand and is left typing with only one hand for a while.

A RESTAURANT REVIEW : “Walk on Water” at the Ocean Beach Pier

“Walk on Water” (“WOW”)
Ocean Beach Pier
5091 Niagara Avenue,
Ocean Beach, CA

Oh my, oh my, oh my. It has been many years since I had a meal at “WOW”. They were famous for their macadamia nut pancakes that last time I was there, and I tried many times to duplicate the taste in my own kitchen.

This time, when I asked if they had any macadamia pancakes, the chef was not even sure what I was talking about; didn’t “think we have any”, but if we did could make them for me. (After placing my order for something else she said that she had found some nuts and could make them for me. I declined.)

Unfortunately, I think that “Walk on Water” tried walking on water one too many times, for I do not remember having a worse meal than I was served today.

Car Wash Review: Midway Express Car Wash

I have never owned a new car before. I mean “really new.” My new Camry L had only 25 miles when I drove it off the lot. I have had it almost 5 months, and have had it “professionally” washed two times. (See my first review several months ago.) For the most part, I have washed it myself but for some reason the birds are attracted to the sky blue color, and this time I could not reach the middle of the roof when it was splattered by bird feces when I parked under a tree to keep the car cool. OK – dumb. But…the car was cooler than if I hadn’t parked under the tree; and the bird droppings didn’t bake on to the roof like it might have if it was out in the sun. OK – you are right. It was dumb.

I decided to take the car to the “Midway Express Car Wash” because there are three car washes in the area that I wanted to try.

What’s Going on at Ft. Rosecrans Now? Its Watering Schedule Out of Sync

Judi Curry  August 21, 2012  3 Comments on What’s Going on at Ft. Rosecrans Now? Its Watering Schedule Out of Sync

Three of my widow support group have husbands buried at Ft. Rosecrans cemetery. A fourth one has a fiancé buried there also. All of our men are in very close proximity to each other – probably because they all passed away at just about the same time.

Three of us try to visit our husbands once a month, if for no other reason than to make sure they are still there. I usually use the time to berate him for leaving me. Sometimes I bring flowers from our garden; sometimes one of the other women bring a sticker to put on the plaques – a forbidden practice but we do it anyway; sometimes we bring individual windmills to stick in the rocks below the walls that hold their remains.

South Beach Bar & Grill

Are there people living in Ocean Beach who do not know about South Beach Bar & Grill? After my daughter and I watched my granddaughter jump off the pier for Junior Life Guards last Wednesday (that story will be written next week) we decided we were hungry and I suggested we go to “South Beach.”

A Restaurant Review: Margarita’s on Newport Avenue

Judi Curry  August 7, 2012  5 Comments on A Restaurant Review: Margarita’s on Newport Avenue

Margarita’s
4955 Newport Ave.
Ocean Beach, 92107

For many years I have “boycotted” Margarita’s restaurant in Ocean Beach. I felt that when they opened their doors, they were unethical in the way they left another establishment that employed them for many years. As I heard it from the former employers, the new owners of “Margarita’s” left taking original recipes and staff from their establishment, and, if fact, set up the menu and environment similar to the one they had just left.
