When Did Point Loma Become the ‘Stepchild’ of San Diego?

Judi Curry  July 21, 2020  53 Comments on When Did Point Loma Become the ‘Stepchild’ of San Diego?

By Judi Curry

You do not have to be a resident of the Point Loma or Ocean Beach area to know that there are many problems facing us at this time. A few examples might be the steady traffic of cars on Sunset Cliffs during the sunset hours; the new stop sign at the corner of Pt. Loma Ave and Sunset Cliffs; the incessant noise from firecrackers being shot off at all hours of the day and night; the steady stream of emergency vehicles answering the calls for service from people jumping (or falling) off the Cliffs, etc.

We are having an influx of homeless people looking for refuge not only on the beach, but in driveways, under cars, and, in many more cases, in backyards where gates are being left open.

Should I go on? The parking lots on Sunset Cliffs seem to be open 24 hours a day for loud parties,

The Widder Curry: ‘Opening the Schools During the Pandemic Is Absolutely Insane and Is Child Abuse’

Judi Curry  July 15, 2020  30 Comments on The Widder Curry: ‘Opening the Schools During the Pandemic Is Absolutely Insane and Is Child Abuse’

As a former educator – Teacher, Principal, Inservice Director, Assistant Professor, Deputy Director, etc., I cannot understand all the controversy about opening or not opening the schools during this pandemic.

I also cannot understand why the schools have to be opened in August – one of the hottest months of the year. I remember when school didn’t start until after Labor Day, and why it was changed is a mystery to me. If I had my druthers, I would suggest that school end June 30th, and not begin again until October 1st. The reason for that is also some of the reason that I think opening up the schools in a few weeks is ludicrous.

Number one is that when it is hot students do not learn as well.

Granted that some schools are air conditioned; but an equal number are not.

The Saga of Mr. X and the Crows Goes On

Judi Curry  July 1, 2020  6 Comments on The Saga of Mr. X and the Crows Goes On

It’s been a little over a week since I wrote about the problem that “Mr. X” was having with the crows in his backyard. They followed him everyplace he went; dive-bombing him unexpectedly at different intervals. It did not matter if he was in his own backyard; in my backyard; walking on Sunset Cliffs, etc. For the most part they missed him, but I noticed that even the neighbors were staying away from him in fear that they too might be injured by these crows.

Since that article appeared, someone suggested that Mr. X have some peanuts available for the crows to eat. Maybe they were hungry.

The Widder Curry Says: ‘They’re Fire Crackers – Not Fireworks!’

Within the past few weeks, Sunset Cliffs has become a more dangerous place to live than ever before. Dangerous because of the noise and air pollution; dangerous because of possibility of more accidents, both “cliff-wise” and automobile wise; more dangerous because our first responders will not be able to fulfill their job because of the additional traffic on the road. Yes, I am angry; upset, tired and irritated.

Let’s start with the new 4 way stop signs on the corner of Pt. Loma Avenue and Sunset Cliffs Blvd.

I counted 29 cars stopped at the corner going north after the sunset yesterday. Prior to that I watched people speed up once they passed the stop sign, going south to watch the sunset. I watched people on motor scooters and bikes ignore the signs completely and just go through them while cars were making turns onto the same road as the riders.

I watched – and hoped – that there was not an emergency because if there was there would be no way that our first responders would have been able to respond because there was no place for the lines of cars to go. They could not have pulled over; chaos would have reigned. But just because there were no accidents yesterday,

The Crows and Mr. X – Time for a Little Levity

Judi Curry  June 22, 2020  8 Comments on The Crows and Mr. X – Time for a Little Levity

You have to picture this scenario – a beautiful tall tree, with huge green leaves, and at the top of the tree an aerie – (crossword answer for “nest”).

In that nest are two baby birds, and hovering over those baby birds are three of the biggest crows you have ever seen in your life. (Well…maybe not in your life, but, relatively speaking, very large.)

As life evolves, a sad thing happened to those baby birds – they both fell out of their nest as they were beginning to learn how to fly. One died on impact; the other one tried to move around but its parents could not get it up to the nest again. Enter the “Mr. X” – the man of the house closest to the tree and crows’ nest.

“Mr. X” saw the two babies; knew that the nest was too tall for him also and hoped that the parents would be able to save him. The baby moved over to the garage, and the parents watched him move.

A Mother’s Dilemma About Guns in Her Daughters’ Houses

By Judi Cury (written on June 4 )

As a mother of three, grandmother of 18 (including 5 “greats”) and as an opponent of people owning guns for reasons other than hunting, I am faced with something I never thought I would have to reckon with in my lifetime.

I can already hear people saying “what about the 2nd amendment?” and my answer is that that amendment was written a long time ago, when carrying a gun was a safety measure. I have never been able to fathom people carrying rifles, for example, for purposes other than hunting for food to put on the table. I am violently opposed to killing animals for trophies; I am opposed to people killing people as well. I am against most guns of all kinds.

Two things happened today that have caused me unrest – along with the Corona Virus, and the horrible murder of George Floyd. I received the following message this evening:

“Tomorrow is National Gun Violence Awareness Day, when people across the country will wear orange to show that they are part of the fight against gun violence in America.”

Big Changes Coming to Hugo’s in Ocean Beach

With the advent of the COVID-19 virus, many restaurants are having to change their menus, eliminate their buffets, and still attract diners. There are some big changes coming to “Hugo’s”.

Before I begin with the changes, I want everyone to know that take out service, using the old menu, is still available. There is no more eating inside, but takeout is still available. I also want to let you know that they do not know for certain when the “new” restaurant will open. They are waiting for the health inspection giving them the “go-ahead.”

All the refrigerators and freezers are hooked up. Right now it is just a waiting game.

So for the changes: It will now be known as “La Fruteria Y Panaderia De Hugo’s Cocina.”

The “Panaderia” will be selling assorted Mexican Bread, cakes and slices of cake, (11 varieties!)

One of my very favorite restaurants is going to have their Grand Re-Opening on Monday, June 1st. I am so excited! I met with Al Nashashibi this afternoon and was pleased to see the changes that will be taking place, the new paint, and the concern for maintaining safe distances for the diners.

First of all, something that will change the place entirely is the absence of the buffet. With the new Covet-19 rules in place, it is impossible to still have a buffet and be safe. Tables and chairs will be placed strategically in the area where the buffet used to be.

The Widder Curry’s Open Letter to the Mayor and Councilmember: ‘Do Something About Sunset Cliffs! Now!’

Dear Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Councilmember Jen Campbell:

I have been a resident of the Sunset Cliffs area since 1966. I have never felt as concerned about living in this area as I do now. I feel that my safety is in jeopardy, along with all of my neighbors living south of Pt. Loma Avenue. Let me tell you why.

Since the pandemic the parking lots along the Cliffs are blocked off. At each lot there are many police officers and cadets asking people to “move on”.

The Widder Curry Still Has Questions

Maybe because I am a blond – with a lot more gray – but I am very puzzled by the new mandate that our Mayor is putting into place.

Effective sunrise Monday, April 27th, ocean access will begin.

That means you can go into the ocean and kayak, swim and surf. But it also means that you cannot sit on the sand; you can’t lie down on the sand; you can’t play volleyball and you cannot engage in group activities. You cannot go boating; you can’t walk on the piers, but you can run or walk on the sand. Does running or walking mean that if you have the virus you won’t deposit the germs on the sand, but if you are sitting you will?

The Widder Curry Is Angry

Judi Curry  April 20, 2020  19 Comments on The Widder Curry Is Angry

By Judi Curry

It is hard not to feel anger during this “forced” stay-at-home period of time.

But the anger is directed in so many areas – directed at the President of the United States for ignoring all the information that he received that the pandemic was coming. Anger at China for not telling us the truth about how it began in the first place.

Anger that once it was recognized the President of the United States changed his dunce cap for a “pseudo medical degree” and proceeded to go by his “gut” level on what should be done. Anger at the President of the United States for not listening to Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of the most respected physicians/scientists in the world today as to methods of combating this disease.

Angry at the President of the United States for touting the malaria drug that he has a vested interest in even though Dr. Fauci has urged caution in using it. My anger at the President of the United States in only one part of the reason my blood pressure is higher than usual.

‘Who Would Have Thought …’

By Judi Curry

Ever since my husband became ill with lung cancer and had difficulty talking, I have never slept well at night. (I can take delightful naps during the day – but then I don’t sleep at night!) Because it was difficult for him to talk, or even get out of bed, he would turn on the light when he needed help and it got to the point that even a small flashlight would wake me up.

Now, ten years later I am still having difficulty sleeping but added to the sensor lights going on because the skunks, squirrels, raccoons and other animals think that my home is a thoroughfare, I am worried about the outcomes of the COVID-19.

I am not necessarily worried about myself in spite of being in the age group that is – or used to be – the most vulnerable,
