 For a couple years in the 1980s, my husband and I lived in Roseville, and Brown Bag Deli was our favorite deli (besides Pomas). Located on Rosecrans across from NTC, Brown Bag Deli is much like its name, very basic when it come to atmosphere.

What made my early experiences of this deli special was the heavenly smell of fresh baked bread coming out of their large ovens in the early lunch hours.

The sandwiches are delicious, reasonably priced and there is a long menu list to choose from. The large size can easily be split between two people. Also, they have 3-foot and 6-foot sandwiches that can feed large groups and parties.

Sliced pickled peppers are one of the unique ingredients added if you order the “works” on the sandwich. This addition goes back to the original owner who was a long time Portuguese resident.

When Naval Training Center was still in service the deli would be lined out the door at lunchtime. Surprisingly, most of the Liberty Station residents, students and others don’t seem to know about this great deli, or maybe they just don’t want to deal with crossing Rosecrans Street. They don’t know what they are missing.

What inspired me to write this review was that Brown Bag Deli has branched out in a new direction. They are baking several different and healthy kinds of bread selling for $2.50 a loaf. My favorite is the whole wheat herb bread. These loaves have a wonderful home-baked slightly chewy consistency, the same as their traditional loaf bread they have been using for their sandwiches for years.

THANK YOU for telling us about buying bread at the Brown Bag Deli! OB and PL can get cookies, cupcakes, pizza, and delicious desserts from Azucar. But bread? The old OB Bakery used to provide squaw bread to all the restaurants in San Diego. Gone. I plan to try the Brown Bag with hopes for a regular source.
