Foster Farms Chicken Salmonella Sickens 22 People in San Diego

Staff  October 11, 2013  0 Comments on Foster Farms Chicken Salmonella Sickens 22 People in San Diego

Public health officials are reporting that 22 San Diegans have fallen ill due to the salmonella outbreak from Foster Farms chicken products.

Consumer groups have demanded a recall of the California-produced chicken, but there haven’t been enough federal food inspectors to deal with the problem due to furloughed employees.

County’s Health & Human Services Agency reported to the press that the average number of salmonella cases in the area for this stage in the year is 324. We now have 354 cases.

10News says that “chickens processed at the three California plants may not say Foster Farms on the packaging. They are sold under a variety of names including Ralphs, Safeway, O Organics, Eating Right and Kirkland, among others.”

Author – “Quotes and Poems of a Nobody”

Not too long ago, I had a chance meeting with Sunny. And it didn’t start out all that well.

Sunny is the sister of Ian Rey, the young man that worked at Henry’s for over 14 years and was let go because of a missing jacket. I had been talking to another store about the possibility of Ian working there, and Sunny misunderstood my intentions. She thought I wanted to do a story – like the other media – when, in fact, I wanted to introduce Ian to the owners of Baron’s Market, where he now works.

After talking to Sunny and straightening out the reason I wanted to talk to Ian, I found her to be an absolutely delightful person; a poetess in her own right; on the upward path of becoming an entity of her own, writing, reading her poetry, etc. to a wide audience in San Diego. To say that she has a following in San Diego and beyond is mild compared to who she is and what she is becoming.

As the winds of change blow and howl at you door, you may be realizing the extent of your influence only at the very moment that it feels the most challenged by circumstance. Never mind those paltry winds; they’re always kicking up a ruckus. And never mind the heft of your own authority nor the degree to which it is threatened. The only questions that you need to be asking yourself this week are — What is right? What is good? What is fair? And what is just? So long as you hold these most noble aims in the forefront of your mind, you need not fear a thing, Aries.

For more, come inside …

Extreme Weather Watch: September 2013, Floods in Colorado and Mexico

weather5By John Lawrence

Boulder, CO –The rain began to fall on Monday, September 9. Experts would ultimately call it a 1,000-year rain and a 100-year flood. By Thursday September 12, Little James Creek began ripping buildings from their foundations and sending roofs plunging into basements. Roads were closed and still the rain kept coming.

In the city of Boulder, Boulder Creek was roaring at a rate of 3,104 cubic feet per second, according to Boulder police Chief Mark Beckner. Two days before, it had been flowing at a leisurely 54 cfs.

At 1:40 AM on Thursday University of Colorado officials issued a text alert ordering faculty and staff residents living in university housing near Boulder Creek to evacuate. Soon, CU and the Boulder Valley School District would both announce they were closing down.

Honesty Is Alive on Sunset Cliffs

Source  October 10, 2013  4 Comments on Honesty Is Alive on Sunset Cliffs

A narrative by a resident of Sunset Cliffs:

As we were walking our dogs yesterday morning in the cold and wind, a beautiful mom with her 8 year old son walked up to us and asked if we knew what she should do with a note and cash that she had found.

It seems that the wind must have blown it away from its rightful owner. The mom – Nicole – and her son then entrusted me to try to find the owner of the note and money. After all, they blew away from somewhere and from somebody. She and I talked and decided if I could not find the owner, the money will be donated to my church.

Boy Scouts of America: Be Prepared to Find a Way to Care

“Scouting for All Rally” in Front of Boy Scouts Headquarters, 1207 Upas St. at 11:00 on 10/13/13

By Ernie McCray

Oh, if the Boy Scouts of America
could just begin to understand
how much better the quality of life
could be in this land
if they would just completely
put aside their homophobe-ary
and recognize the humanity
of folks who are LGBT,
folks who add to and enrich our diversity –
if they would just embrace all of them,
even those who are older than eighteen,
the age at which gay boys can still be dismissed
as no longer being worthy of boy scout membership.
It’s way past time they
began treating
all human beings with respect
and decency.

The Espresso Pizza of Ocean Beach Changes Hands

Frank Gormlie  October 9, 2013  4 Comments on The Espresso Pizza of Ocean Beach Changes Hands

The green sign on the glass door at Espresso Pizza said it all.”Under New Ownership”.

Arguably, the best pizza in all of Ocean Beach came out of the ovens at Espresso Pizza on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. For 35 years Teresita – the owner/ manager – ran the place, and her staff of chefs and cooks and servers were with her nearly that entire run.

Apparently, Teresita has retired and has sold the business to Chris Stavros, the owner of the Olive Tree Market – in the same building.

Ocean Acidification: State Of Seas In ‘Fast Decline’ According To Report

Source  October 9, 2013  0 Comments on Ocean Acidification: State Of Seas In ‘Fast Decline’ According To Report

By Christian Cotroneo / The Huffington Post Canada / October 4, 2013

Last month, a UN-sponsored panel expressed “extreme confidence” that the world is in the throes of climate change — a situation that sees oceans bear much of the brunt.

And now, a review from an international team of the world’s leading scientists suggests emerging dead zones may be stirring up mass extinctions in the world’s oceans.

“We have been taking the ocean for granted,” a study from the International Programme on the State of the Ocean (IPSO) claims. “It has been shielding us from the worst effects of accelerating climate change by absorbing excess CO2 from the atmosphere.

“Whilst terrestrial temperature increases may be experiencing a pause, the ocean continues to warm regardless.”

Poll: Bare Majority of Locals Support Ocean Beach Town Council’s Ban of July 4th Marshmallow Fight

Staff  October 9, 2013  9 Comments on Poll: Bare Majority of Locals Support Ocean Beach Town Council’s Ban of July 4th Marshmallow Fight

In the most recent poll at the OB Rag, a bare majority of local residents support the OB Town Council’s “ban” of the July 4th marshmallow wars. But nearly a third of locals said they disagreed with the move. Clearly this poll reflects a lack of community consensus on the marshmallow issue.

At their monthly public meeting on September 25th, the Board of the Town Council voted unanimously to “end” the marshmallow mess. (Here is the full text of the resolution.) The OB Rag criticized this action as overly-unilateral and called for the creation of a village task force and more of a consensus on the annual event – which everyone agrees is out of control.

Of the respondents who indicated they live either in OB or Point Loma, only 52% of the overall total of 120 respondents said they agreed with the Town Council.

Taking Drugs at the League of Women Voters Meeting

Judi Curry  October 8, 2013  1 Comment on Taking Drugs at the League of Women Voters Meeting

Topic – “How Safe Are Your Prescription Drugs and Medical Devices?

The Pt. Loma/Ocean Beach LWV held their second meeting Monday, October 7th at the Pt. Loma Library. The topic, which should be of interest to anyone taking prescription drugs, had a very small turnout. Perhaps it was the time change – 1:00pm instead of the regular meeting at 10:00am, but those of us in the audience heard from two panel speakers – Jean Willson and Shirley Walkoe – and the chair of the group, Nancy Witt.

A short DVD was shown re: the FDA and their responsibilities, and then 14 questions were addressed by Jean and Shirley. It was interesting to find out that Jean was a family doctor, practicing primarily in rural Iowa before practicing in Arizona and retiring. A female doctor in the1950’s was a rarity, and many males refused to see her unless they were very ill or injured.
