Weird Black Smoke Ring Blamed on Ocean Beach – But More Likely Originated From Snapdragon
Back before the rains, on January 20, a very weird dark smoke ring appeared up in the sky – and instantly Ocean Beach was blamed – you know, all those pot-heads …
But it’s more likely from pyrotechnics at Snapdragon Stadium.
On Instagram, the responses ranged from a stoned Zuni just back from a dispensary or jellyfish pissed off in losing their habitat.
2 Environmental Groups Sue to Block 25-Acre Sports Complex Planned Next to Alpine Ecological Preserve
Two environmental groups filed suit on Friday, Jan. 5, to block a planned 25-acre sports complex that is supposed to be built right next to an ecological preserve in Alpine.
The Cleveland National Forest Foundation and the California Native Plant Society filed suit in San Diego County Superior Court against the County of San Diego in a lawsuit that argues the county failed to comply with the California Environmental Quality Act in its approval of a large sports complex in the rural community of Alpine, located adjacent to the Cleveland National Forest.
The County has approved plans to break ground in spring 2024 on the estimated $46 million, 25-acre sports complex next to Wright’s Field Ecological Preserve in Alpine.

By beach cams, we mean video cameras installed near beaches and surf spots seldom pointed toward the best wave peaks.
Back in the day, in the pre-Information Age (roughly before the 1950s), apart from tides, surfers knew little about what to expect from the ocean.

New Life Breathed Into Plans for Aquatic Complex at Liberty Station’s NTC Park
New life has been breathed into plans for a multi-pool aquatic complex at Liberty Station’s NTC Park. The plans have been around for years but after multiple delays, funding and interest dried up.
But now after the city of San Diego has completed a feasibility study, the project is experiencing the most momentum it has had in years, says Stephen Rodi, chairman of the Peninsula Aquatic Complex Council and president of Point Loma High School’s aquatic boosters program, as quoted recently by Pt Loma-OB Monthly.
Details of the feasibility study are expected after the holiday season, Rodi said.
Despite New Courts at Pt Loma’s Barnes, Pickleball Players Still Feel City’s Prejudice Against Them
Jakob McWhinney, a writer at Voice of San Diego, has documented the acrimony between San Diego pickleball players and tennis players in a recent post, including a brief synopsis of pickleball’s origins. But he also outlines why pickleball players are angry with the City of San Diego and why they feel the mayor and city council are prejudiced against them.
Here’s a peek in how it all has impacted OB and Point Loma:
