The Richest 1% Have Captured America’s Wealth — What’s It Going to Take to Get It Back?

Source  February 17, 2010  49 Comments on The Richest 149 Have Captured America’s Wealth — What’s It Going to Take to Get It Back?

By David DeGraw / AlterNet / February 17, 2010

The United States already had the highest inequality of wealth in the industrialized world prior to the financial crisis — and it’s gotten even worse since.

As a record amount of US citizens are struggling to get by, many of the largest corporations are experiencing record-breaking profits, and CEO’s are receiving record-breaking bonuses. How could this be happening, how did we get to this point?

An OBcean in Haiti

Source  February 15, 2010  5 Comments on An OBcean in Haiti

by Jordan Barnes

I could not have anticipated what I was to see, or the affect that our experience in Haiti would have on me.

My fiance Christene and I left from Ocean Beach to join ten others and 1,200 lbs of medicine and supplies that had been donated. This is only a fraction of the donations that “Children’s Hope” has received since the catastrophic quake, but such was our weight allotment, the rest will go down in subsequent trips.

My mother Leisa Faulkner began Children’s Hope, a non-profit/non-religious organization, in 2004 to help the desperate situation of the children of the poorest country in the Western hemisphere. Along with humanitarian aid, my mother has become very involved in the political situation there.

Readers think Mayor Sanders should build a permanent homeless shelter.

Frank Gormlie  February 12, 2010  16 Comments on Readers think Mayor Sanders should build a permanent homeless shelter.

Recently, we asked our readers what they thought about the major construction projects listed by Mayor Jerry Sanders in his State of the City address, and what their priorities would be.

In our poll, we gave respondents choices of “a new central library,” “convention center expansion”, “a new city hall”, “a Chargers football stadium downtown,” plus “none of the above,” and also allowed readers to write in their own ideas.

Someone wrote in that they wanted to see a permenant homeless shelter – and guess what? That won. A third of our respondents went for that. 32%

by Kelly Bennett and Dagny Salas / Voice of San Diego

San Diego County’s low participation in the food stamps program stems from problems with the way the county operates, a study released February 5th by the Supportive Parents Information Network concludes from more than 170 interviews with low-income residents.

The Other Side Answers in OB’s Hot Dog Cart “Wars”

Mr Schillinger: We Are All OB Locals ! We all pay taxes and pay rents and support OB. We all have personal problems. To use this forum to air yours is a bad way to do business. You criticize my business ethics with no truth and only opinions without the facts.

You can claim the deep pocket business men are shutting down the little guy!

Should OB Have a Town Hall Meeting on the Homeless Youth and the Police ?

Lane Tobias  February 10, 2010  23 Comments on Should OB Have a Town Hall Meeting on the Homeless Youth and the Police ?

The last week or so has been an incredibly busy time here on the OB Rag, due in part to Obecians’ emotional attachment to some very deep seated issues – namely, the police and the young transient/homeless population.

We have now seen what seemed like an unnecessary police response to a skinny dipper on a Saturday afternoon culminate with a number of young transients being the target of a crackdown on “loitering” and other “quality of life” issues this past weekend. In between these two events, we have seen a community both divided and mutually concerned on the possible implications of these and future events.

Reader Rant: OB Hot Dog Cart “Wars”

Source  February 9, 2010  68 Comments on Reader Rant: OB Hot Dog Cart “Wars”

by Ryan Schillinger

Our hot dog cart is the “original” OB hot dog cart, the one that was at Winston’s for years and years. The cart was originally owned by OB Bob.

We got kicked out of that spot due to technicalities of private vs. public property, and have spent 9 months at a new location in the Rock Paper Scissors parking lot. We have built up a large group of customers, and have made that spot known for late night hot dogs and munchies.

Police Crack Down On Rampaging OB Youth

Frank Gormlie  February 6, 2010  84 Comments on Police Crack Down On Rampaging OB Youth

Due to some complaints by OB residents, channeled by 10NEWS, San Diego Police have begun to crack down on wayward youth, rampaging across our community.

Here, four officers, two on bikes, are seen handing out citations to a half-dozen young people on the seawall.

Is this the response the community wants?

Blame Yourself and Your City Leaders – not the Kids

This is not an article laced with numbers, statistics, and quotes from various sources. In writing this, I am reaching back into my own experiences over the last year and a half as a social worker who happens to live in OB and putting the truth out on the table.

For those who have complained about the influx of “drug crazed” (mostly young) transients infiltrating our neighborhood, you are finding it difficult to hold someone accountable for the disturbances and quality of life issues this population has brought to OB. You want them gone, out of here, ejected. You don’t care really where they go, so long as they are not bothering you anymore.

Guess what? You are to blame.

Rainwater harvesting, urban style

Source  February 3, 2010  7 Comments on Rainwater harvesting, urban style

By Nate Hipple

If some catastrophe suddenly cut-off the entire water supply to San Diego County it wouldn’t affect Cielo Foth. She’d still probably be watering her fruit trees. Cielo’s secret is a home irrigation system that catches the rain falling on her roof and channels it into several 4-1/2 x 7 ft tanks. Currently those tanks are filled to the brim (thanks to our quick rainy season) so Cielo had to buy a few extra barrels to catch the surplus.

“People say it doesn’t rain much in San Diego”, Ceilo said. “But isn’t that a good reason to collect the rain we do get?”

Zing!

Now, here’s a woman who is doing what we all should: taking advantage of an unlimited natural resource in order to promote a more self-sustaining lifestyle.

“I just needed more water for my fruit trees and I didn’t want to burden the city.”
