A new sign at OB’s Dog Beach warns people and dogs to “check in before you get in”. It’s all an effort by the County’s Department of Environmental Health to have swimmers and surfers and dog owners to get the very latest on the status of coastal water quality.

A little after 2pm on Thursday, November 2nd, a Notice of Abatement was attached to the abandoned building at Ebers and Greene streets by the City of San Diego.

Addressed to Nelco Properties, LLC, it notified the owner at 2269 Ebers that representatives of the City’s Code Enforcement Division and the Development Services Department had inspected the property on October 17th and had found it to be a vacate building with graffiti and lots of trash. The inspectors found enough threats on the property to the public ‘s health and safety that they declared it to be a public nuisance pursuit to a number of Municipal and State codes.

The Notice requires “immediate actions” and gives Nelco Properties until November 17th to clean up the site and secure all the openings on the building.

By Parisa Ijadi-Maghsoodi / San Diego UrbDeZine / October 27, 2017

Instead of taking concrete steps to address the growing housing affordability crisis, San Diego has done nothing for years. Now, faced with nationwide criticism for its mishandling of a Hepatitis A outbreak that was caused by the mistreatment of a growing homeless population, City leaders are wondering what went wrong.

First, San Diego gave its public housing authority, San Diego Housing Commission, free reign to opt out of following federal laws aimed at protecting housing subsidy recipients. As a result,

A project proposed for 5018 Narragansett is not ready for review, the Ocean Beach Planning Board told the developer last night at their monthly meeting. Also, no one showed for the condo project proposed for Abbott and Muir, plus the Board had a lively discussion about short term rentals and is considering asking a Board member to resign for lack of attendance.

5018 and 5018 1/2 Narragansett Project

Chair John Ambert informed the audience that an action item associated with this project on the 5000 block of Narragansett was changed to an informational item only as the Board had not received updated documents on the project. The Coastal Development Permit proposes to demolish and to remodel 2 single story units with a second story addition on each unit.

On November 2, 2017, at 6:00 p.m., the Balboa Park Committee will meet at Balboa Park, in San Diego. During the meeting, the House of Spain is scheduled to ask the Committee for a decision regarding a proposal to build a statue honoring a Spanish conquistador named Vasco Nuñez de Balboa. The Committee ought to tell the House of Spain “No, it’s 2017.”

These days, at a time when many statues in the South are being taken down because they honor a legacy of slavery, the House of Spain wants to erect a statue in honor of a Spaniard

Jefferson Jay’s ‘OB Rag Rag’

Source  November 1, 2017  1 Comment on Jefferson Jay’s ‘OB Rag Rag’

Local OB musician Jefferson Jay and his partner Arlene played for the OB Rag‘s celebration last weekend.

And it turned out Jefferson wrote us a song, “The OB Rag Rag”, which of course they played – and actually got a few folks dancing and stomping their feet.

Here are the lyrics:

The OB Rag Rag
(Happy 10th Anniversary)

by Jefferson Jay

Here’s to the OB Rag,
Where justice writing for our
people is our bag,
With even saddest stories, spirits
never sag,
Where folks are flying Ocean
Beach’s flag.

The Ocean Beach Planning Board meets Wednesday night, November 1st, and has 4 action items on its agenda. The Board meets in the Community Room of the OB Rec Center, 4726 Santa Monica Ave.

First, the Board will review its attendance log for the 2016 calendar year, and if any Board member has missed too many meetings, he or she may face some kind of sanction, according to the bylaws. Second, the Board will discuss recent events within the short term vacation rental controversy – such as the recent cancellation of a City Council hearing ostensibly due to a last-minute memo from the City Attorney’s Office – and potentially take steps according to their stance.

Hierarchy of San Diego’s Elected Venerables

Source  October 31, 2017  1 Comment on Hierarchy of San Diego’s Elected Venerables

By Norma Damashek /San Diego Free Press

You and I – as ordinary voters living in greater San Diego – have a mindnumbing number of opportunities to elect scads of people to serve as our public mouthpieces.

We routinely go to the polls or mail in our ballots to select the “public servants” we believe will represent our personal and community interests and improve our well-being. Keeping up with who’s running for what is a daunting job.

In fact, if we built a totem pole made up of all our elected officials, it would surely reach the clouds, maybe even touch the sky.

Curious about how it might look?

What a blast we had at the OB Rag‘s 10th anniversary celebration and Halloween costume party.

Over seventy people – many in costume – joined Rag staff and friends at the gig, which included live music, food and drink, raffle tickets and prizes and a costume contest.

Thank you.

When the OB Rag throws a party, they know what to do: Food, entertainment; raffles; drinks; good company; great people, etc.

I would like to thank those of you that introduced yourselves to me and thanked me for the articles I have written for the Rag for over 8 years.

It Just Doesn’t Stop Over at the Scary Ebers – Greene Project in Northeast Ocean Beach

Frank Gormlie  October 30, 2017  8 Comments on It Just Doesn’t Stop Over at the Scary Ebers – Greene Project in Northeast Ocean Beach

Good thing it’s close to Halloween because otherwise OB wouldn’t put up with the crazy stuff that just keeps happening at that scary Ebers- Greene Streets project – at 2269 Ebers.

It just doesn’t stop.

The site is going to hell.

The latest – from neighbors of the project – the fence surrounding the lot is now completely gone.
