Plans are underway to add 17 accessory dwelling units (ADU) behind a single-family home in Clairemont, and some neighbors are not happy about it. CBS 8 is Working for You to find out if the project is following the rules.

“17 units behind here. You got to be kidding me,” said Bill Buchwald, who lives on Almayo Avenue. “There’s no parking here. We’ve got a nice, quiet cul-de-sac.”

The OB Town Council “rebrand” – the OB Community Foundation — is still having problems, apparently.

There have been now four recent resignations from the Board that governs the organization — two from members just elected in June. So, obviously, the problem-plagued group is still swimming in troubled-waters.

The most recent resignations include Nicole Cox Murray and Margaret Morghen — both just elected to the board in late June and early July. So, within just three months, two brand new board members felt there were problems enough for them to call it quits. Plus, a more-long time board member, Aaron Null, has also resigned from the board of directors.

Across the country today, October 1, a National Day of Action is being held by the U.S. Postal Workers Union. The sole event for this in San Diego will be at the Hillcrest Post Office, 3911 Cleveland Ave, from 10:00-1:00. This event and this location are significant, and the public is encouraged to sign their petition and to attend to show their support.

The 1966 World Surfing Championships in San Diego was a watershed moment in surfing. Organized by an international cadre of visionary contest directors, led by Peruvian maestro Eduardo Arena, the event was attended by more than ten thousand spectators, showcasing the budding sport to the nation in real time. Held in the city’s coastal enclave of Ocean Beach, it was the first world contest ever hosted by the United States and helped put San Diego on the map as an attractive tourist city in America.

A string of burglaries have hit local Ocean Beach restaurants, and the businesses are trying to get the word out in hopes that people will be vigilant.

OB Noodle House 1502 has been hit twice within the last 3 weeks. Restaurant owners on the same block said burglars have been targeting their business too. There was another burglary at Pizzeria Luigi not too far away.

Late last week, on Thursday morning someone had broken  in 1502 and used a pry bar to remove a plywood covering of broken glass, entered the building, and left with the restaurant’s surveillance system.

A small apartment building in Ocean Beach on Bacon Street was just sold for $1.86 million. And it’s unfortunate what will probably happen next.

It’s vacant and 2175-77 Bacon St., is slated to be torn down. Among its multiple units, is a two-bedroom/one-bath unit and a studio. It’s unclear what the adjoining single-story building contains – or if it’s even part of the sale.

In 21st Century USA, it is unlikely to find a rite of passage into adulthood. Hawaiian boys living in the 1700s plunged from high cliffs into clear water as a passage ritual.  Point Loma high school seniors sign up for Larry Zeiger’s English class where they write, direct, sing and dance their way to graduation. At least they did for 33 years, until Zeiger retired.

For 7 nights, right in the middle of studying for finals, the Zeiger seniors performed to sellout crowds. Every parent in the audience watched in amazement as their child dove off the cliff through the Gotta Sing, Gotta Dance portal. Jocks, poets, artists and nerds write the musical, make the sets, discover hidden talents and rehearse for months.

The September 26 Coastal San Diego Candidates Forum was a trip back in time to an era when politicians sat down with constituents to talk, listen, and learn.

Using a “speed-dating” layout, eight election-year contenders rotated around eight tables to converse with 80 community members. This interactive format was not
conducive to sloganeering. Constituents could challenge political spin – and they did.

The rights of a news reporter just became a little stronger here in San Diego.

Dorian Hargrove is now an investigative and long-form news producer at CBS 8, a job he took after being forced out of NBC 7 in retaliation for his criticism of NBC 7’s failure to stand behind his reporting on the Ash Street debacle.

The news is that Hargrove just settled his lawsuit against NBC7 for an undisclosed amount of settlement. Dorian and his attorney, Marlea Dell’Anno were prepared to go to trial, and confident they would prevail in front of a jury.

On Thursday, September 26, the Rag received an email from the Larry Turner for Mayor campaign with a troubling announcement.

Turner’s campaign announced that he has been “blocked from participating in a Mayoral Forum at Politifest 2024.”

Politifest is an annual forum run and managed by the media outlet Voice of San Diego with reporter Scott Lewis as the editor.

Albertsons owns the largest share of grocery stores in San Diego County, according to an analysis by The Washington Post that looks at consolidation in the supermarket industry.

The traditional grocery store industry has shrunk over the past several decades. Now, according to The Post’s analysis, a third of U.S. grocery stores are now owned by just four companies — Walmart, Kroger, Albertsons and Aldi’s (Süd), the fastest-growing supermarket chain in the country.
