Our Social Security System Is Crashing Into Chaos — Thanks to Elon Musk

A flood of cuts led by Elon Musk has sent the agency into chaos as a new commissioner prepares to take charge.

The Social Security Administration website crashed four times in 10 days this month, blocking millions of retirees and disabled Americans from logging in to their online accounts because the servers were overloaded. In the field, office managers have resorted to answering phones at the front desk as receptionists because so many employees have been pushed out. But the agency no longer has a system to monitor customers’ experience with these services, because that office was eliminated as part of the cost-cutting efforts led by Elon Musk.

And the phones keep ringing. And ringing.

The federal agency that delivers $1.5 trillion a year in earned benefits to 73 million retired workers, their survivors and poor and disabled Americans is engulfed in crisis — further undermining its ability to provide reliable and quick service to vulnerable customers, according to internal documents and more than two dozen current and former agency employees and officials, customers and others who interact with Social Security.

Was Erroneous 4.6 Earthquake Alert Last Week Due to Trump’s Cutbacks at NOAA?

Frank Gormlie  March 19, 2025  0 Comments on Was Erroneous 4.6 Earthquake Alert Last Week Due to Trump’s Cutbacks at NOAA?

It’s been totally underplayed by local media, but last week on Friday, March 14, the United States Geological Survey sent out an alert for a magnitude 4.6 earthquake in the Salton Sea area.

The USGS report included details about the epicenter, the depth and how widespread the impact was.

The problem is that it never happened and the earthquake report was pulled down from the agency’s website.

USGS Public Affairs Specialist Paul Laustsen conceded the earthquake never occurred. He said:

“The message was sent in error during a system testing. There was no earthquake of that magnitude at that time or at that depth. We are still looking into what happened. This is definitely a rare occurrence.”

In Trump’s War Against NOAA, We’re All Losers

Last month, close to 1,000 National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration workers, including weather forecasters, were fired. The Trump administration has now told agency leaders to fire another 1,000 people. Along with 300 resignations to date this will approach 20% of its workforce.

The White House’s Department of Government Efficiency also informed NOAA that its lease on the Center for Weather and Climate Prediction in College Park, Md., will soon be canceled. The center is essential in creating accurate computer models for everything from the next severe weather front to hit farmers in the Midwest to the long-term costs of extreme weather events linked to climate change.

‘Code Red for Our Universities’: San Diego Students, Faculty Fear for Campus Free Speech Under Trump

Source  March 18, 2025  2 Comments on ‘Code Red for Our Universities’: San Diego Students, Faculty Fear for Campus Free Speech Under Trump

By Kristen Taketa / The San Diego Union-Tribune / March 16, 2025

San Diego college faculty and students say they fear the Trump administration’s plans to investigate UC San Diego and other universities, and its attempts elsewhere to deport student activists and assert control over academic programs, mark the start of a broader erosion of civil and human rights.

Last weekend, federal agents detained and tried to deport a Columbia University student for his role organizing pro-Palestinian protests. On Monday, the U.S. Department of Education said it was investigating 60 universities for alleged antisemitism amid such protests. And on Thursday, the Trump administration threatened to withhold all future funding from Columbia unless it cedes control of its Middle Eastern, South Asian and African Studies department to the government, on top of other demands, and  intensified an ongoing effort to deport student protesters.

To many academics, students and free-speech advocates in San Diego and beyond, more than individual free speech is at stake. They say such moves by President Donald Trump and his administration represent an attack on everyone’s academic freedom and First Amendment rights.

It’s Time to Get Out of Doge. Two Federal Judges Have Ruled that Thousands of Fired Federal Workers Must Be Reinstated

Two US District Court judges have now ruled that thousands of fired federal employees must be reinstated within the next week. First, a district judge in San Francisco issued a blistering blast and now a Maryland district judge has ruled basically the same. Here is a report from NPR on the California ruling:

Thousands of federal employees fired by the Trump administration must be offered job reinstatement within the next week, a U.S. district judge in San Francisco has ruled, because he said they were terminated unlawfully.

“It is a sad day when our government would fire some good employee and say it was based on performance when they know good and well that is a lie,” Judge William Alsup, an appointee of former President Bill Clinton, said before issuing his ruling from the bench.

The Thursday decision marks a significant stand against President Trump’s sweeping efforts to remake the federal government. The White House has appealed the decision.

Trump White House Closes Down $1 Billion Affordable Housing Program

Source  March 13, 2025  3 Comments on Trump White House Closes Down $1 Billion Affordable Housing Program

By Jesse Bedayn / Associated Press / March 12, 2025

The Trump administration is halting a $1 billion program that helps preserve affordable housing, threatening projects that keep tens of thousands of units livable for low-income Americans, according to a document obtained by The Associated Press.

The action is part of a slew of cuts and funding freezes at the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, largely at the direction of President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, that have rattled the affordable-housing industry.

Preserving these units gets less attention than ribbon-cuttings, but it’s a centerpiece of efforts to address the nation’s housing crisis. Hundreds of thousands of low-rent apartments, many of them aging and in need of urgent repair, are at risk of being yanked out from under poor Americans.

The program has already awarded the money to projects that would upgrade at least 25,000 affordable units across the country, and details of how it will be wound down remain unclear.

Wall Street Revolts Against Trump

This is what the DOW looks like today, so far. Down nearly 600 points. Wall Street didn’t believe Trump when he promised to enact tariffs on the campaign trail.

Army Corps Knew Trump Order Would Waste California Water, Memo Shows

By Scott Dance and Joshua Partlow / Washington Post / March 7, 2025

The Army Corps of Engineers colonel responsible for releasing water from two California reservoirs at President Donald Trump’s direction in January knew that it was unlikely to reach the southern part of the state as Trump had promised, according to a memo obtained by The Washington Post.

The agency carried out Trump’s directive, which came in the wake of catastrophic wildfires in Los Angeles County, on short notice on Jan. 30, though it would normally require days to coordinate. A memo written four days after the release, obtained by The Post through a public records request, shows how federal officials rushed ahead with the plan to release irrigation water despite objections from the state’s elected officials and some local farmers.

Col. Chad W. Caldwell, commander of the Army Corps’ Sacramento district, wrote that the water that poured out of Lake Kaweah and Success Lake “could not be delivered to Southern California directly.”

Final Day of In-Person Voting for Uptown Community Planning Group — Tuesday, March 11

Source  March 10, 2025  2 Comments on Final Day of In-Person Voting for Uptown Community Planning Group — Tuesday, March 11

By Mat Wahlstrom / Special to the OB Rag

Tomorrow, Tuesday, March 11, the Uptown Community Planning Group (UpCPG) that was chosen to replace Uptown Planners, will hold the final in-person voting for its first regular election.

Readers of the OB Rag may recall that the last time we visited the city’s shenanigans in Uptown was September 2024. Back then, the City Council had to take time out to retroactively bless the malfeasance and fraud committed by Vibrant Uptown, their handpicked YIMBY usurpers.

Despite Vibrant Uptown’s efforts , the composition of the final board was roughly split between their endorsed candidates and those not beholden to their pro-developer agenda. Understandably, this led to conflicts that should be understood as natural and part of learning to operate under new rules.

Rally to Defend EPA Workers in Downtown San Diego — Monday, March 10

Source  March 10, 2025  0 Comments on Rally to Defend EPA Workers in Downtown San Diego — Monday, March 10

San Diegans will march from US Courthouse to Federal Building, City Hall, and will sign giant Thank You card to EPA workers. Hundreds of San Diegans will rally and march to thank and defend EPA and NOAA workers who are under attack by the Trump administration and stand up to Trump’s attack on our climate.

In the wake of climate-driven devastating fires in Los Angeles, participants will call for city and state governments to stand up to the Trump climate denialism and step up their own climate actions.

We cannot stand by while the Trump administration denies climate change in the face of the heartbreaking fires in LA, expands fossil fuel drilling, illegally cuts funds for renewable energy and environmental justice, places fossil fuel executives in charge of our environment, and paints a target on the backs of the EPA workers who are working for our health and our environment every day.

Democrats React to Trump Speech of Lies With Smoke Bombs and Flares (Satire)

Frank Gormlie  March 5, 2025  6 Comments on Democrats React to Trump Speech of Lies With Smoke Bombs and Flares (Satire)

At least three lawmakers were injured on Tuesday, March 4th during Trump’s state of the union address before a joint session of Congress, one of them seriously.

It was a chaotic scene as Democratic congress people and Senators reacted to Trump’s lies and attempts to stage a coup over the government and install an oligarchy.

Smoke bombs and flares were thrown, further fueling political tensions in the Capitol but preventing Trump from speaking further — he was rushed from the floor. Elon Musk was also chased from the floor by irate congresswomen and seniors.

Lawmakers were scheduled to listen to over an hour address by Trump, but the opposition party found its footing and role in the attempted coup and refused to allow it to happen. They said that Trump and Musk’s moves were illegal and that lawmakers should first insist on the resignation of Musk from any official role in the government.

Robert Reich: ‘Where’s the Democratic Party? They Need to Wake the Hell Up!’

Source  March 4, 2025  10 Comments on Robert Reich: ‘Where’s the Democratic Party? They Need to Wake the Hell Up!’

By Robert Reich

Trump is killing the economy, reducing the U.S. government to rubble, and destroying our relationships with our allies. Putin may love it, but it’s a catastrophe for us and much of the rest of the world.

Many of you ask me: Where’s the Democratic Party?

I wish I had a good answer. At a time when America needs a strong, bold, courageous opposition, the Democrats’ silence is deafening.

My old friend James Carville advises Democrats to “roll over and play dead.” With due respect to James, he’s full of sh*t.

Democrats have been rolling over and playing dead too long. That’s one reason the nation is in the trouble we’re in.

If Democrats had had the guts years ago to condemn big money in politics, fight corporate welfare, and unrig a market that’s been rigged in favor of big corporations and the rich, Trump’s absurd bogeymen (the deep state, immigrants, socialists, trans people, diversity-equity-inclusion) wouldn’t have stood a chance.

My simple advice to congressional Democrats: Wake the hell up!

Tonight, Trump will address both chambers of Congress. He has taken over the brains and intestines of Republican lawmakers, who will applaud his stream of lies.

Democrats will do — what? Sit on their hands? Applaud a few insipid things?

Ideally, Democrats should boycott the whole event. Even sitting in the well of the House as if this were just another president addressing just another Congress legitimizes Trump’s coup.
