As a follow up to my last two posts [at Voice of San Diego], I went down to the City Purchasing Department to look at the design-build proposals that were submitted for the Brighton Avenue Comfort Station in Ocean Beach. What I found out there and in subsequent calls to the proposers on the project just reaffirmed my original suspicion that the City, to put it politely, messed this up.

Sometimes it’s hard to put something in writing when you’re still hoping for a better ending. But after having told this story over a hundred times, I think it’s important just to get it out there to my friends in writing and not have to keep repeating the sad details.

House leaders are unfortunately restricting their proposed budget cuts for the remainder of fiscal year 2011 to nonsecurity discretionary spending in an attempt to tame a $1.3 trillion deficit. This approach is especially shortsighted since the Federal Treasury loses twice as much revenue due to tax breaks than Congress appropriates on all nonsecurity discretionary spending.

She handed me a five dollar bill through the car window, then turned and walked away. I don’t know her name, nor where she was going—the encounter was so brief—but I know I will never forget that lady stranger who generously saved me from a lot of frustration and prevented me from walking a mile or more to my destination. A veterans group is moving forward with plans to relocate to a new neighborhood although the group says it is not welcome there.

After a month’s delay, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1392 is working to make a former market in Ocean Beach at the corner of Ebers Street and Point Loma Avenue a permanent home as it continues to talk with community members about the one sticking point.
