Fox5 reports that a 14-year-old boy was sent to the hospital Tuesday with a fractured pelvis due to a collision at Ebers and Point Loma Avenue while the other driver, a 47-year-old man, was arrested for felony DUI.

The unidentified teenager was riding a Talaria electric off-road dirt bike northbound on Ebers Street while the adult male was driving a Land Rover LR3 southbound on the 1400 block of Ebers Street. This was around 7:53 p.m.

Fox5 reports:

Both the driver and rider entered the intersection with Point Loma Avenue, authorities explained. The driver began to make a left turn onto eastbound Point Loma Avenue and the dirt biker continued straight on Ebers Street.

The 14-year-old boy impacted the Land Rover on the right side and went under the vehicle. SDPD confirmed. He was reportedly dragged several feet. The dirt bike rider sustained a fractured pelvis to both the left and right side, police said. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The 47-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of felony DUI. SDPD Traffic Division officers responded to the scene and are investigating the collision.

Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.

14 on a motorized vehicle, on a public street…. didn’t have a driver’s license. Dirt bikes usually don’t have lights either and it was dark. Sounds like the boy ran a stop sign or something for him to T-bone the Land Rover. The driver being DUI is secondary and based on this story, he probably wouldn’t have been arrested if he hadn’t been drinking. The 14 yr. old and his parents are just as guilty. Hopefully the boy will be OK, but it will be a rough journey for him and his parents to learn their lesson.

Talaria have headlights. I don’t know they are fully street legal though.

Victim blaming is always an interesting opinion, particularly when nothing in this report says anything about whether the bike had lights on, speeds, etc. All we know is a DRUNK person who was TURNING ran into someone going STRAIGHT in a beach town where you should always be cautious cause there are people on bikes, scooters, etc everywhere. All this says to me is you have a bias against young people on ebikes and assume they’re all misbehaving.

Let’s blame the 14 year old instead of the DRUNK DRIVER?!?! And it’s the kid and parents’ fault?

Blaming the victim is in vogue these days. That being said I would be interested in more details. The 14 year old was riding an actual motorcycle so it’s a misnomer to call it an e-bike. If he did run a stop sign, that’s a significant detail. That doesn’t lessen the culpability of the drunk driver but the outcome could have been very different. Anyway we have no idea if the kid did or didn’t run a stop sign but yes the driver needs to be charged appropriately.
I don’t know the street legality of these electric dirt bikes that have popped up recently or whether or not they require a license to operate on a street as opposed to off road usage.

Not blaming anybody, just pointing out that the Ebers/Point Loma intersection is a four way stop sign controlled intersection. Either one driver or both ran a stop sign. Given the way people drive today, I’m guessing both.

People, a little respect for the law and courtesy toward bikers, pedestrians and other drivers would make our neighborhood a whole lot safer. Just sayin’.
