FYI — This Is How to Spell the Name of an OB Resident — UPDATED

There’s a lot of different spellings of a “native” resident of Ocean Beach. Yet, a decade ago — in 2014 while the OB Community Plan was going up for renewal, a decision was made of the proper spelling.

Members of the OB Planning Board and of the OB Rag came to a consensus: an OB resident is called an “OBcean” and that’s how it is spelled. It’s useful to remember it’s where OB and the ocean meet — an OBcean.

Plus, in 2011, the Rag ran a poll on the various spellings. And “OBcean” won. See this:

It’s official!  We had a run-off vote including the top three names for an Ocean Beach resident. And “OBcean” is the winner!

“OBcean” comes from the ditty that says: Put the “OB” into “ocean” – it won 56% of the votes, with “OBecian” getting 31% of the votes with 22, and with “OBcian” trailing with 13%.  71 readers participated in this poll which ran a week.

Our poll was the second week in which we asked readers to decide the “final” version of how to spell it.

Here’s what the poll and the voting looked like:

  • Final, Run-Off Vote for Term for Ocean Beach Resident. The following were the top three vote getters in our last poll.

    OBcean – 40 votes – 56%

    OBcian – 9  votes – 13%

A former lawyer and current grassroots activist, I have been editing the Rag since Patty Jones and I launched it in Oct 2007. Way back during the Dinosaurs in 1970, I founded the original Ocean Beach People’s Rag - OB’s famous underground newspaper -, and then later during the early Eighties, published The Whole Damn Pie Shop, a progressive alternative to the Reader.
