‘No Oil!’ Spelled Out on Sand in Mission Beach

Staff  February 5, 2018  0 Comments on ‘No Oil!’ Spelled Out on Sand in Mission Beach

Hundreds of San Diegans rallied Saturday, Feb. 3rd in Mission Beach against the Trump’s administration proposals to vastly expand offshore drilling off the California coast – the first time this has been proposed in more than three decades.

Besides the rally, participants spelled out “No Oil!” on the sand, while others held hands up and down the length of the beach, off Belmont Park. The Hands Across the Sand event organized by Oceana as well as other well-known environmental activist groups, such as Greenpeace, Sierra Club, and 350.

Similar rallies were also held Feb. 3 in Laguna Beach, Santa Monica, Brea, Ventura, San Luis Obispo and Santa Cruz. Plus, more will rally and march on Thursday, Feb. 8 in Sacramento, an event coinciding and including a march to the plan’s only formal hearing in California.

The Koch Brothers’ War on Unions is a War on Democrats, Education, and Democracy

Jim Miller  February 5, 2018  0 Comments on The Koch Brothers’ War on Unions is a War on Democrats, Education, and Democracy

There’s blood in the water. That’s the sense that the money behind the American Right has as we head into the second year of the Trump era. And with recent polls showing the big Democratic polling edge ebbing, the sharks are beginning to circle.

But, as unsettling as that is, there is a lot more at stake than just one election cycle.

Strength in Community: OB Joins Together to Fight Crime

By Nicole Ueno

Living in the same town you were raised in is a funny thing. Nostalgia is woven through each day, whether it’s walking down the same concrete stairs at my daughter’s school, or passing by what used to be an empty dirt lot where as kids we’d ride bikes and eat popsicles bought at the corner liquor store.

I’m one of the lucky ones that got to grow up in the beautiful and unique community that is Ocean Beach. It’s been such a huge part of my life story- from my childhood spent at the Big Olaf ice cream store, to working several jobs on Newport during my teens and twenties, meeting my husband in our favorite coffee shop, Jungle Java, and now raising our family here. I appreciate OB for all that it is and all that it’s given me.

The local event will coincide with other rallies across the state to protest the Department of Interior’s offshore leasing plan, which threatens California’s vibrant ocean-dependent economy, marine wildlife, and the health of communities along the West Coast.

The demonstration, entitled “Hands Across the Sand: San Diego’s Voice Matters”, is hosted by Oceana, Greenpeace, Sierra Club, and 350, and a number of local politicians – Democrats and Republicans – are scheduled to speak.
