The OB Rag announced the top 3 winners of its “Worst ADU (accessory dwelling unit)” contest, a tongue-in-cheek event meant to raise awareness about what critics deem predatory construction.

While it is legal for homeowners to construct an ADU on their property in San Diego County, some residents argue that these units sacrifice the comfort and aesthetics of neighborhoods.

The Ocean and the Election — Voting for the Blue in the Red, White and Blue

By David Helvarg / Blue Frontier / Sept. 6, 2024

I feel we need to talk about the ocean as an election issue now.  Obviously and unfortunately our public seas did not get to be a part of Tuesday’s presidential debate in Philadelphia between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, which most viewers saw as a victory for Harris even as things got more heated than Prudhoe Bay on the Arctic Ocean in August – when it hit 89 degrees.

More surprisingly, climate was not seriously addressed during the 90-minute debate even as Hurricane Francine was heading towards coastal Louisiana and New Orleans.

San Francisco, September 6, 2024 – The Ocean Cleanup today declared the eradication of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) achievable within a decade and an ambition to make the cleanup happen faster and more cost-effectively. Today’s announcement is the first time both a cost and a timeline has been placed on ridding the Pacific Ocean of the environmental hazard presented by the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Six years after sailing out of San Francisco with the ambition of developing the technology to rid the world’s oceans of plastic, The Ocean Cleanup returned to San Francisco with the knowledge and know-how to relegate the Great Pacific Garbage Patch to the history books.

Historic Preservation and Housing: Propaganda Vs Reality

Source  September 13, 2024  5 Comments on Historic Preservation and Housing: Propaganda Vs Reality

By Bruce Coons / SOHO Newsletter / September-October 2024

In politics, a good, simple story sells. The housing crisis has fueled a persistent myth among YIMBYs—that preservationists are a major obstacle to solving this pressing issue. This narrative is appealing in its simplicity, but it obscures the complex realities and nuanced role of historic preservation in our communities. This myth persists because many YIMBYs think that well-intentioned but misguided preservationists are blocking progress.

A little over a month ago, the Rag announced our “Worst ADUs in San Diego” contest. We said then:

If a towering “accessory dwelling unit” (ADU) is throwing shade at you and your neighbors, the OB Rag wants to hear from you. Why? We’re holding a contest, ta-dah.

After some 50 entries, the judges deliberated and made selections for the Gold, Silver and Bronze categories.

If we are to take Donald Trump at his word, then since I just donated to the Harris-Walz campaign, I now will anticipate an arrest if he wins.

Come get me! Last weekend, Donald Trump threatened violence if he didn’t win the election and if he won, he would jail political opponents, Democratic political lawyers and donors and enact the substance of that Project 2025.
