Around midnight and 1 a.m. Nov. 16, an explosive device was detonated in the alley between Cape May and Brighton east of Abbott .

No one was hurt but a truck sustained damage. The San Diego City Metro Bomb Squad was on scene gathering evidence and conducting an investigation.

Scottie Williams, a U.S. Army veteran and Ocean Beach resident, lived with intention, his family said Friday. When the 28-year-old said he’d do something — like finishing a job or committing to hanging out with someone — he’d do it.

On Sunday, Nov. 9 he approached the Silver Strand Half Marathon with that same level of commitment, strongly finishing the race in the same fashion he had completed so many other half marathons before. But after crossing the finish line and receiving his medal, the seemingly healthy Williams collapsed and died.

“It was a normal day,” said Sarah Lloyd, his older sister. “And then he just collapsed. They worked on him for a long time, and they just couldn’t bring him back.”

“We don’t have any answers,” she added.

An unidentified male pedestrian was killed late Friday night, Nov. 14, when he ran across a street in the Midway District and was struck by a SUV.

Police responded at 11:11 p.m. to Hancock Street and Camino del Rio West, where they determined the 33-year old had run east across the intersection against the red “Don’t walk” signal. Then he was struck a BMW being driven by a 55-year-old woman driving north on Camino del Rio West. The woman driver had a green traffic light.

Mexican authorities are searching for a popular YouTuber from Ocean Beach who was reported missing after fishing off the coast of Baja California on Tuesday, Nov.11.

“He’s an adventurer. He pushes the envelope. That’s part of what we love about him,“ said Phil Friedman, a fellow angler, podcaster and close friend.

Officials say Mikey Rijavec was fishing eight miles off the coast on Tuesday when he issued a mayday call. Over the phone, fellow anglers tried to help him with the engine trouble he was having when the call suddenly ended.

For years, the San Diego Police Department allowed thousands of sexual assault kits to sit on evidence room shelves. Police leaders decided to investigate cases first and determine whether the kit would be useful evidence later.

As the backlog piled up, a nationwide movement to “test all kits” pressured SDPD to act. In June 2017, the City Council allocated $500,000 to the department to test backlogged kits. Victims’ rights groups and the city attorney also pushed for testing.

A man and his dog suffered only minor injuries after sliding 20-feet down a cliff near the 900 block of Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, according to San Diego Fire Department’s Battalion Chief James Diaz.

Sunday night the fire department responded to a call of a man and his dog getting stuck at the bottom of a cliff just after 7:30 p.m.

Battalion Chief Diaz said that witnesses say the dog ran down the cliff and his owner followed him, which led to both of them sliding down about 20-feet, where they found themselves trapped at the bottom.

More than a dozen people connected to the San Diego County chapter of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang have been sentenced for their roles in a hate-related stabbing and attack on three young Black men in Ocean Beach, the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office announced Thursday, Nov. 6.

The prosecution centered around the June 6, 2023, attack on three men – – ages 19, 20 and 21 — who were chased by the defendants on Newport Avenue after one of them apparently spoke to a Hells Angels member’s girlfriend.

One of the victims fled, but the other two were severely beaten by numerous defendants, who hurled racial slurs and told the victims they didn’t belong in that neighborhood.
While one of the beaten victims was on the ground, Troy Andrew Scholder — the lead defendant in the case who was described by prosecutors as a longtime Hells Angels leader — pulled out a knife and stabbed him in the chest.

A memorial is being planned by friends for Tracy Condon, killed in a hit-and-run incident this week in Ocean Beach.

She was reportedly sitting on the curb near the front of the OB Library or Post Office when she was struck by a truck and fatally injured. The driver initially ran away but upon his return 3 hours later, was arrested by police. Tracy was known for year as someone who handed out food to homeless folks in OB — only to then become one herself.

A memorial has been scheduled for Tracy, next week, on Wednesday, Nov. 12, down at the Wall at the end of Newport Avenue, at 4:55 p.m.

AB-8 Industrial hemp.

Expands the definition of cannabis to include all products containing natural and synthetic cannabinoids (excluding CBD isolate and FDA-approved cannabinoid products), subjecting such products to the same regulatory requirements as cannabis (including — but not limited to — laboratory testing, taxes, track-and-trace requirements, etc.). Inhalable hemp products, including hemp pre-rolls and hemp flower intended for consumption, are prohibited. While cannabis retailers are permitted to sell manufactured cannabinoid products that meet state requirements, tobacco/cigarette retailers are prohibited from selling any form of cannabis or cannabinoid product, except for CBD isolate.

The Sierra Club has filed a lawsuit challenging the recent approval of the Harmony Grove Village South development based on its potential fire risks.

The environmental organization argues in the suit, filed last Friday, that the planned community in North County will be located in a high fire-risk area with only one evacuation route in the event of a wildfire.

The case is the latest challenge to the 111-acre project, approved Oct. 1 by the San Diego County Board of Supervisors over the objections of many residents who already live in the area.

The location is a little less than one mile west of the city of Escondido, south and east of San Marcos and north of the Del Dios Highlands Preserve.

Plans include 453 residential units, 5,000 square feet of commercial/civic space, four acres of private and public park
