The Newport palms got their day – or rather their 10 minutes – in court Tuesday, November 9, as reported here in The OB Rag. The main reason why the effort failed was that the plaintiffs in the legal complaint, John and Tracy Van De Walker, did not own the trees. It was stated that these trees are on “city owned” property.”

Think about that for a minute. What the law is saying is the city, separate from its citizens, owns property that it can do with as it pleases and the citizens have no say. It sounds as if the judge was saying these trees are on someone else’s property as if the city was a private property owner.

Take a long look at the outcome of San Diego’s 2010 Redistricting Commission process. You’ll be impressed by the success of that former Commission in drawing boundary lines for our City Council districts that have enabled San Diegans to elect a range of culturally diverse leaders in our nine council districts. We now have what is popularly designated as a Black District (D4), an Asian District (D6), a Gay District (D3), and two Latino Districts (D8, D9).

A recent documentary series available online investigated LuLaRoe, a company that targeted women with the promise of gaining financial independence working from home, by selling quirkily patterned leggings and dresses, “creating freedom through fashion.”

In reality it was a pyramid scheme, wherein the real money was made by recruiting others into becoming sellers to recruit others to become sellers. The people at the top of a pyramid scheme get a cut of both that particular scheme’s actual product sales in addition to a cut of the buy-in fees new sellers pay to get in on it.

The G.O.A.T of All G.O.A.T.S.

By way of explanation, the term G.O.A.T. was first coined by Heavyweight boxing Champion, Muhammed Ali’s wife. She borrowed his, “I am the greatest” taunts and converted them to shorthand, “G.O.A.T.”, aka the “Greatest Of All Time.”

G.O.A.T. has been applied to other “greats;” the Olympic gymnast champion, Simone Biles; basketball greats LeBron James and Michael Jordan; as well as tennis super star, Serena Williams. These greats and others are often referred to as the G.O.A.T. by fans and journalists.

City Presentation of New OB Library Design Unsatisfactory

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into Ocean Beach’s water…

No doubt the thought of coming to Ocean Beach, to speak for the City of San Diego, strikes terror in city employees. The largely negative reaction the city received at the November 3 Ocean Planning Board meeting presentation on the new OB Library expansion was an illustration why.

The meeting Wednesday night was held at the Water’s Edge Church, which struck this writer as a bit ironic.

Despite the revolution of music-streaming, there is still a demand for hard copies of music. CD’s, vinyl records and cassette tapes are still widely available to the casual collector or the hard core connoisseur. While your local Target or Walmart might have some generic new releases, here are some local music stores that can help you find just about anything, if you’re willing to look.

Cow Records- Ocean Beach

Cow Records is located on the beach end of Newport Ave in Ocean Beach, and it’s a great store for intentional record buying. They have a wide variety of formats, both new and used vinyl records, CD’s and cassette tapes.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help save the iconic Palm Trees of Point Loma and Ocean Beach. Organized by Glenn Millar, the fundraiser’s goal is $20,000. Up for only two days, it has already raised $5,795 as of this report (11/5).

On October 14, a few individual neighbors in Ocean Beach were notified that the historic 100 year old palm trees in front of their houses would be chopped down by the City of San Diego due to an emergency.

Several local sites have just made the “Most Endangered List” for 2021. Each year Save Our Heritage Organization issues the list. This year, the Navy’s redevelopment project at NAVWAR threatens “the heart of historic San Diego” in Old Town – so that’s on the list.

So is the Marine Corps Recruitment Depot in Point Loma. And Presidio Park is still on it.

In 2006, SOHO Executive Director Bruce Coons wrote an impassioned, history-rich appeal to San Diegans to write and speak out against Caltrans’s plan to sell its surplus Old Town office property—a 2.5-acre site at the corner of Juan and Taylor Streets that it had already promised the Old Town Planning Group that it would go to Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. For thousands of years this land had been a Kumeyaay settlement along the San Diego River.

SOHO contacted local politicians to work to acquire the property to expand the park and interpret this “lost” corner to honor Kumeyaay heritage and culture and the connection to the river.

Each and every ten years, as decreed by Article I Section 2 of the United States Constitution, we engage in the ritual of counting the number of people living in our country.

We then use the updated population numbers to reapportion our Congressional districts and the political boundary lines in our state, county, and city governments–aiming for reasonably balanced districts. In practical terms, reapportioning and redistricting determine which representatives you’ll be eligible to vote for in upcoming elections.

Ten years ago, San Diego faced a bigger-than-usual redistricting challenge.

An intricately connected network of organizations is controlling dyslexia discourse in the US and taking over dyslexia screening and remediation. Thirty-nine states now have adopted dyslexia laws. Most of these laws contain the International Dyslexia association’s (IDA) remediation recommendation of being “multisensory, systematic, and structured.” Researchers Jo Worthy et al state, “This approach is not well supported by research, but it is officially sanctioned through legislation in many states and has had a profound effect on policy and practice.”

IDA, the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA), and the International Multisensory Language Education Council (IMSLEC) are three big players.
