Many years ago my mother stumbled through her early morning Thanksgiving ritual of prepping a huge turkey for the afternoon feast. Before her first cup of coffee she dropped the bird in the roasting pan and shoved it into the oven. A couple of hours later she opened the oven door and she realized she had put it in the pan upside (or breast-side) down.

Memorial Day – Remembering Lawrence Edward Webber, Beloved Brother of San Diego Family

Author’s note: During the last few days I have come to know and develop a deep respect for a man I have never met. I do family history as a hobby and have been doing research on Frank’s uncle, …. What follows is what I have discovered, and what has brought me to tears a few times while collecting it all, here, for Memorial Day.
Lawrence Edward Webber, USMC, MIA – POW – KIA
Lawrence Edward Webber was born in 1920, in Malden, Massachusetts, the son of Frank Webber and Elizabeth Benson. He was the youngest of four children. He had one brother, Frank Webber (long-time local businessman and owner of Ocean Beach Camera, in the Newport Avenue area) and two sisters, Mildred and Dorothea (mother of our own editor, Frank Gormlie).

As a young man Lawrence moved to San Diego, where his siblings also lived, and enlisted in the Marine Corps on May 2, 1939 at the age of 19. He was stationed in San Diego until December 1939 when he was transported to Shanghai, China.

There may be a period of time when our site appears to be down. Rest assured it will be temporary but it could last anywhere from a few hours to a full day. Word needs to spread across the globe about where we are located. When you arrive at the new host there will be a welcome sign.

If you feel like it’s been too long for us to be out of commission try doing a hard refresh of your browser window by holding down the Control key and pushing the F5 key. If that doesn’t work, you can do a DNS flush. Since everyone is using a different operating system go to Google and search “flush dns cache” followed by your operating system. For example: flush dns cache windows 10.

On Probation or Off Parole? You can Vote in California – Register Now! Here!

While having a conversation about the upcoming Presidential debate I asked a coworker if he was going to be voting. He replied, “I wish I could, but I’m on probation.” Whoa… This was a moment in a busy shop, that is normally filled with Mitt Romney and Ron Paul supporters, where two like minded people had a few minutes to chat. The young man I was talking with is quiet about his political affiliations and before I could respond to his statement we were surrounded by republicans, once again.

Once I was back at my desk I did a quick internet search and printed a page from the Northern California ACLU website that I handed to him later in the day. He thanked me with a big smile on his face.

Pagan religions believe there are three stages to a woman’s life; the Maiden, the Mother and the Crone. The Maiden is mostly concerned with her own life and thinking about what the future holds for her. The Mother centers on caring for the family, children, partners and parents. The Crone (once a dreaded word that conjured images of the crazy cat lady who lived on the edge of society) has “been there, done that” and can refocus on herself and then, if she’s a mind to, the world at large.

You know, I never really had an issue with getting older. That was until, one day, I starting feeling older. Every once in a while I would catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror or in a photograph… And I’d think, who in the hell is that old woman? She looks like my mother!

It’s been an interesting week here at the OB Rag admin desk with three major bouts of downtime. I’ve spent a good number of hours deciphering error logs, tweaking settings and chatting with tech support.

It seems one major concern for us is the amount of comment spam that hits our server at regular intervals. We have excellent spam filters (Akismet) that keep 99.9% of this crap from showing up on the site where you, dear reader, can see it. But that doesn’t keep it from reeking havoc behind the scenes.

Good morning OB, San Diego and all points beyond! I hope all of you had a good Thanksgiving. We sure did! Actually it was one of the better ones for me during the last few years, we had more than a dozen family and friends here for dinner on Thursday, and then almost all of them came back Saturday for my mother’s 73rd birthday. We had chocolate cake and my two little grand-daughters (her great-grand-daughters) helped her blow out her birthday candles.

It’s pretty amazing having four generations of family all together in one place and we are blessed that we all live close and can do it on a pretty regular basis. It’s one of the thing that I am thankful for.

Activists representing many groups, including Labor, Occupy San Diego, MoveOn and Nurses rallied yesterday afternoon on the Clairemont Drive bridge over Interstate 5 to bring attention to how much maintenance our infrastructure needs and the number of jobs those repairs could create. This bridge has been identified as one needing repair and has a surface rating of 2 out of 10 (any rating 4 or lower is deemed structurally deficient) and needs to be repaired now.

8 AM until dark: The San Diego Veterans For Peace, Chapter #91, will be honoring the fallen soldiers/sailors/airmen from Southern California killed to date in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars by the installation of our “Arlington West” Memorial on the lawn of the USS Midway Museum near the intersection of Harbor Drive and Broadway. Newly produced markers, similar to those found in Arlington National Cemetery, will honor those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, whose home of record was in San Diego County, Imperial County, Orange County and Los Angeles County, approximately 250 to date.

Police confiscated a large amount of personal property when they swept through the civic Center Plaza early friday morning, and many people have expressed concern over how or if they would be able to get any of it back.

As posted by Matthew Hall, a rough list of items confiscated from OccupySD

  • 4 big pop up tents
  • 7 big trash cans full of miscellaneous stuff (ie. skateboards, blankets, clothing, sleeping bags, tents, tarps)
  • 15 chairs
  • 1 shabby chic yellow nightstand
  • 8 tables
  • variety of cardboard signs
  • 7 bikes
  • 30 backpacks/carts/roller suitcases
  • 9 boxes labeled games, dvds/books, toys, helmets, lunch boxes, blankets
  • 1 bucket labeled OC and mace remedy and prevention, containing vinegar and imodium AD
  • 3 coolers
  • 4-5 cameras
  • 10 plastic crates full of stuff
  • Also: 16 individual lots of property impounded from specific arrestees (backpacks, purses, tents, etc.)

At San Diego City College today more than a hundred students staged a walkout in solidarity with Occupy San Diego. After holding a rally at Curren Plaza where many students spoke to an enthusiastic crowd, about 150 protesters marched from the campus, down B Street, chanting and addressing pedestrians and onlookers, to the Civic Center Plaza to join the Occupy Movement protesters.

Cap’n Kirk, We Come in Peace – The Coalition for a Better San Diego

In a letter published at the Voice of San Diego yesterday, candidate Loch David Crane has announced that he has withdrawn from the San Diego mayoral race. He states that despite physical problems that made it difficult for him to campaign he gave it his best effort because no one else spoke out to defend legal medical marijuana patients. I applaud him for taking a stance and wish him the best with his endeavors and hope his physical condition improves.

However, in his letter to Voice of San Diego he misguidedly attacks the labor council…

Frank reports that about 200 protesters and lots of police are still in the Civic Center Plaza, and right now the protesters are discussing what comes next for the encampment.

There is one tent and a food table still standing in the plaza and police have agreed to leave them in place as a symbol of the Occupy Movement. HOWEVER, they will not be allowed to have sleeping bags or to sleep in the plaza.

Anyone having additional information is encouraged to comment!

Frank has been downtown all day with OccupySD. He just called to let me know (and to let you know) that it appears that arrests may be imminent in the Civic Center Concourse.

From what he can ascertain, there is to be a large dance event in the concourse on Saturday that is scheduled to go from 3pm to midnight. The police want the plaza cleared so the plaza can be cleaned for this event (sounds familiar… I think something similar happened in Seattle and is now an issue in New York). Some protesters are willing to remove their tents for the event, but don’t want to leave the encampment.

It’s been a long, short week, if that makes any sense at all… I haven’t slept much in the last few days, the wheels in my head have been spinning constantly, a mantra in the near reaches of my conscious thoughts, we, are, the 99%…

After 4 hours of sleep last night, an early morning meeting with the Better San Diego Coalition about the upcoming Mayoral Debate (more on that in the next few days) and tending to family matters most of the afternoon I grabbed a couple of chicken burritos from our neighborhood mexican grill and hopped on the trolley to downtown hoping to meet up with Frank and a multitude of friends, old and new, in the Civic Center to begin the Occupation of San Diego.

Ordinance would fine banks $1000 a day for failure to maintain foreclosed properties.

The Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (ACCE) and the Center on Policy Initiatives (CPI) have released a brief outlining the costs of foreclosed properties on neighborhoods and cities. Some of the points they raise:

  • Foreclosures harm the value of all homes within a neighborhood.
    Homes left vacant and untended during and after a foreclosure can become nuisance properties, deterring potential homebuyers and lowering home values in the neighborhood. Homes in foreclosure experience an average 22% loss in value, and homes within 1/8 of a mile of a foreclosure also decline in value.
