The OB Rag has confirmed the OB Hardware store on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach will be closed by February 2019. Carl Weidetz, the owner, saying he was very proud of “the beach people and our loyal customers”, told this reporter by phone that he is indeed shuttering the doors of his famed storefront. “Fifty years in the business,” he said, “is enough.” He started working in the store in 1969.

The store, formally known as Ocean Beach Paint and Hardware, is one of OBceans’ favorite local “mom-and-pop” businesses.

Very early Wednesday, Oct. 24, a man walking on Newport Avenue was wounded in the leg in a drive-by shooting. The unidentified victim was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The victim had been one of several people who had been involved in an altercation in an alley near Newport Avenue and Sunset Cliffs Boulevard about 12:40 a.m. with a guy. That person got into his car, and while driving by next to the victim who was walking east on Newport, shot at him three times. The shooter sped away in a dark, four-door

Source  October 25, 2018  0 Comments on Ocean Beach Town Council Makes Call for Candidates for Its Board of Directors

The OB Town Council is making its annual call for candidates to its Board of Directors. Every year half of its 15-member Board stands for election, so there’s always opportunities for new people to apply to be candidates.

This time around, the week-long election by OBTC members won’t occur until late January and early February, but the Board is now accepting “Letters of Intent”. Plus the usual monthly public meeting of the Board will not be held in November and December (despite what the calendar on their website says!) as those are dark months and the OBTC is busy with holiday events. Here is the official call for candidates:

The OB Rag has been sent an updated roster of the current members of the Ocean Beach Planning Board – which is published below – by newly-elected Chair Andrea Schlageter (she had been interim-chair).

The new roster reflects recent changes: the appointments of six new members to the Board, which brings the Board up to a strength it hasn’t seen in months, and the Board’s new leadership. It also reflects more of a gender balance on the Board, what with now five women members.

It is a rough and tumble race out there between challenger and Democrat Jen Campbell and incumbent and Republican Lorie Zapf in the District 2 show-down.

Even though Zapf is known through-out the district and has an advantage being the incumbent, registered Democrats have the edge with their 32,000 to 22,500 registered Republicans. (There’s also 27,000 ‘no party preference’ voters.)

So, with less than 2 weeks to go to the November 6 election, who’s on first? And who’s on second?

OB Hardware About to Celebrate 100 Years in Ocean Beach

Frank Gormlie  October 24, 2018  6 Comments on OB Hardware About to Celebrate 100 Years in Ocean Beach

The OB Hardware store at 4871 Newport Avenue is about to celebrate being one-hundred years old, having first opened in 1919. We don’t know yet how they plan to celebrate and we don’t know the details of the original days on a dusty street called Newport. But we wish them the best – one hundred years for a business, especially these days, is a very, very long time.

The storefront, formally called OB Paint and Hardware, has been at its current location for about 5 or 6 years, having moved just a few doors down from the space they occupied literally for decades.

Tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 24, there will be a presentation on a Point Loma Town Council at the Hervey Library, at 6pm.

The folks who are putting this together say:

This is an opportunity to find out how a town council can help Point Loma (and San Diego) address the problems we constantly complain about.

Not just some of the nagging problems of urban living, but the major problems that we live with and would like changed and feel we can’t, and problems we are most afraid about.
