OB RAG tshirt winner

First Place Winning Design by Kat Svetik.

Yes, folks, there is a winner in the Great OB Rag T-Shirt Design Contest! And here is the design.

Kat Svetik is the designer of the First Place winning entry and we will now have T-shirts made with her design.  The contest, announced in February, had a short extension due to staff illness.  Twelve judges – all either current or former residents of Ocean Beach – had 12 designs to pick from.  And after two rounds of voting, the top designs were chosen.

Kat is an OB-native, and an elementary school librarian who currently lives in Los Angeles with her husband.  She was raised in Ocean Beach in the same OB house where her father (his sister and brother) and his father (her grandfather) were raised. The family house was originally purchased in 1913 and has since been home to 5 generations of the O’Mara family – her family. She has deep roots in Ocean Beach, and told us that she is “proud to be part of a community that supports and encourages independent thinking.”

Kat will receive a prize of either $50 or 6 T-shirts with her design. And hopefully will be able to come down for the OB Rag’s Open House for our new office on April 28th. (More about that later.)

In Second Place is the design by Val Tuck – with the birds.  Val will receive a prize of either $25 or 3 shirts with the winning design. A San Diego native with roots in Spring Valley and Lemon Grove, Val is a graphic designer by profession, and occasionally does freelance work.  For 10 years she came to OB to play on her soccer team at Robb Field, and it was then she met her boyfriend – who lived in OB.  So, she’s been living in Ocean Beach for the past 5 years over on Lotus Street. (Her soccer team broke up because everyone got pregnant.)

Third Place design was also won by Val – wow! Val will also be on hand at the OB Rag Open House on April 28th.

We plan on having the new T-shirts printed at the James Gang on US-made shirts – and will make a beeg announcement when they are ready.

(We’ll be publishing all the design entries as promised.)

Not to rain on the winners parade, but it sorta looks just like the old design but with the logos in slightly different places. I really like the other two by Val. Hopefully you guys print up some of those too! I’ll drop a few bucks on the one with the birds.

Jon, keen eye – you! A number of us did like the birds and we may yet print some of those up too. (There’s a small problem: everyone likes black shirts, so what do we do with the black birds?)

I think they would still look good on gray shirts. Or grey if you’re into that sorta thing.

Or… how about making the birds white on a black or grey t-shirt? I like Val’s designs better. The winning design looks like it says ‘O Brag’.

Several of us liked Val’s design, and we may at some point print some up; in the meantime our panel of 12 judges made their decision.

Thanks for committing to using Made in USA shirts! And for that I will commit to purchase one even though I just got the similar old style… Supporting other US workers is definitely the right thing to do!

So I guess all of my shirts with the old “Freaks, Uppity Women and Politicos” tagline are collector’s items now?

If you print up either the second or third place designs in any color other than white (green, grey, whatever), I’ll take a couple in extra-extra-fatguy size…

Dave – we still have our older ones in stock, but they’re limited in size and color.

I will certainly purchase the T with the birds if offered. That would have been my first choice.

Mary, we’ll probably do a “readers’ choice” T-shirt with the birds. We are respecting the decision of the judges – one of whom was your brother – which by majority rule – the above design was the top winner – which is actually, as Jon pointed out, a variation of our “classic” design/ logo.

And you know what, you have to consider that the “sale” of our T-shirts – regardless of the design – is one of the main fundraising efforts we employ (the main one being ads) to help pay for this here OB blog. We hope that our readers and supporters will come out to our Open House of our New Office on April 28 – more on that to come – and also will demonstrate support by selecting our T-shirts, made in the USA, with design by an OB-native – a design democratically selected by current and former OBceans who have long supported the OB Rag, a design chosen from a dozen designs, most submitted during the contest phase which was open to all and even extended – , and shirts that are printed up by a local OB print shop, the James Gang.

OK Frank, let’s see if we can get enough interest in another shirt design… I start the bidding with a $100 donation for one of the “birds” shirts printed on any light color… ie: not black… medium for my better half.

I’m wearing the black winner tee right now as I type!

(made in USA tees of course)

Light blue, dark blue birds? Tan with brown birds?? or even the white as the picture is… another cool design…
