You’ve noticed the large mural on the north side of the old Apple Tree Market over the years, I know. You know, the one that faces Santa Monica Avenue. It’s been there for literally decades.
But now that Apple Tree has moved on and the building is up for lease, what’s to become of the mural?
Ken Keegan, the main artist and facilitator of the mural has contacted the OB Rag searching for information on the fate of the mural. Keegan told us that the mural is over 25 years old and is a historical landmark in Ocean Beach. While we can’t verify it’s “historical” character or designation, it’s definitely been there a long, long time.
Keegan says he knows he has the right to remove it but does prefer it remain where it is. And he’s even open to being commissioned by the new owner or renter for a new mural as well. He wants us to put the question/ issue before the OB community at large.
The mural itself had at least three artists paint a panel. Our advice is to contact the owner of the building up in LA and ask him.

The mural could definitely use a touch up if it’s going to be kept at all. Unfortunately faded older murals like this one end up becoming prime targets for taggers and their tweeker scribblings. I hope they have some sort of art installed there.
I think one potential solution could be to place next years community painted mural from the street fair there!
New store…might be time for a new mural. The building owner and tenant have the right to decide.
This piece of art brings me joy every time I see it and it’s nothing short of awesome that it has withstood the test of time for more than a quarter of a century. As the picture depicts, taggers have largely left this mural alone.
Although it may not have official designation as a “historical landmark”, it stands as an important reminder of the spirit of OB that many residents of our wonderful community would like to see preserved.
The Artist, Kenny Keegan died today. His incredible spirit lives on through his art.
