Rumor: Locals Plan to Celebrate Herb Holiday on 4/20
It is rumored that local residents of this hippie community known for its laid-back and hippie life-style plan on celebrating the annual Herb Holiday known as 4/20. They will be joined by marijuana legalization advocates across the country who are expected to light up during Tuesday’s annual observance of 4/20, the celebration-cum-mass civil disobedience derived from “420” – insider shorthand for cannabis consumption.
French Students Stuck in San Diego Due to Iceland Volcano Find OB Their “Favorite” Place Because of “the funny people there”
On Monday, April 19th, the San Diego Union-Tribune ran a story about French exchange students stuck in our town because of the volcano in Iceland.
If things had gone according to plan, Claire Fourneaux would be back in her classroom in northern France today. But as travelers often learn, you can’t plan for Mother Nature. It’s a lesson Fourneaux and 20 of her high school classmates are learning firsthand this week, thanks to a massive cloud of volcanic ash that has grounded flights over Europe and left the exchange students stranded in San Diego for another week.
Another week of Southern California sightseeing, another week of vacation. “It’s very, very good,” said Fourneaux, 16, who isn’t quite ready to head home.
“We are not too homesick,” classmate Huguer Bonnefor, 17, chimed in.
The students from the Institution Saint-Michel in Solesmes, France, had planned to spend two weeks in San Diego as part of an exchange program with Patrick Henry High School, with each teen staying with a host family.
They’ve visited the usual highlights — San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Sea World, Mission Beach, Coronado — as well as Universal Studios and the Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
“Ocean Beach was my favorite because of the funny people there,” said Louis Ponchon, 18.
Truesdail Posthumously-Produced- CD Release Party at Portugalia April 29th
On January 13, 2009, Donnie Truesdail – a local OB musician and beloved school teacher – was killed by another motorist on the way to teach his students. His spouse Nancy, has now produced his first album – posthumously – and has arranged a CD-release pary for April 29th. It will be held at Portugalia from 6pm to midnight.
This is a big deal. Donnie was an up and coming musician cut off from his creative talents by a wayward driver. Not only did his family and friends suffer, his students were overwhelmed, and our community lost a budding artist.
There was some controversy surrounding his death, as at first the CHP declared it a “suicide” – a determination that shocked and rocked Nancy, his family and his pupils. The OB Rag, for a while, was the only media source that supported his family’s and the facts of his death. The CHP and Coroner did change their tune, finally. This is a big deal. Come out to hear this.
OB Town Council Plans Community Clean-Up on April 24th
Come join the Community Clean Up Event, sponsored by the Ocean Beach Town Council on Saturday, 24 April 2010, from 9am to noon. Meet at the OB Entryway Sign (where Nimitz and Sunset Cliffs split). Fund-Raising Cross-Country Rollerbladers to Reach OB on April 24th – Barring Snow and Rain
On Tuesday, April 20, 2010, a pair of rollerbladers who have journeyed across the country in an attempt to raise one million dollars for Huntington’s Disease, Leukemia and Lymphoma, will finally skate into California where they will end the journey in Ocean Beach in four more days. (Editor: Hopefully, they won’t be held up by the snow and rain predicted for our County the next few days.)
The team, part of a project called “In Motion For A Million”, has been skating since February 1, 2010 and will end in San Diego on Saturday, April 24. The grand finale event is being planned with various sponsors in attendance awaiting the arrival of the team to Ocean Beach Park. The team is scheduled to arrive at 2:00pm.
The team will enter California through Blythe and is expected in Ripley for Tuesday evening. On Wednesday, the team will skate through Palo Verde to Glamis. On Thursday, the team will skate through Brawley, El Centro, Seeley and Plaster City to Ocotillo. On Friday, the team will skate through Jacumba, Boulevard, Live Oak Springs, Buckman Springs and Pine Valley to Alpine.
The final day of the three-month journey will take the team through Lakeside to San Diego. The team will stay in the San Diego area until May 1, 2010 to continue fundraising attempts before returning home to New York City. For more info, go to PR Log (Press Release) .

This is a rally featuring students, parents and educators to show our support for a strong school system. Stop the state budget cuts, restore funding for education. We need to make our voices heard in Sacramento the week before the budget for next year gets negotiated (behind closed doors).

So where is the 420 celebration going to take place? It’s not very nice invite someone to a celebration and not tell them where, unless of course you “forgot”. Inquiring minds want to know.
OB’s 4/20 celebration will happen at the site of the 9th fire pit. (Okay, jettyboy, the 9th fire pit was destroyed when the City moved them for the winter storms.) If anyone wants to let us in on the secret location, please do so.

I ended up down at the beach and south of the pier to celebrate 420 – or at least to find people celebrating 420. Watch for my upcoming post.

Since I live right by where it was parked, you’d have thought I’d have seen a Ragster walking about suspiciously….. Sarah knows nothing of the incident either. We’ll keep a vigilant watch for such vandals in the future. ;D

I think the French students in OB must have been referring to OB comedy every Friday night at Winstons 6pm-9pm.
I think the community clean-up is a fantastic idea. Unfortunately I will be out of town. But we should be doing more of these as the summer months approach and the tourists start invading with their evil plastic wrappers and cigarette butts that never seem to find their way into trash cans.
I have a really good joke about rollerblading, but since this team is doing it for such a good cause, I will save it for later. It’s slightly offensive.

This is now a one billion dollar industry in the US. Lobbyists are paid to work on behalf of the breeding, broker and pet store corporations.
