OCEAN BEACH, CA. Local beach residents want no part of the recent elimination of trash cans by the City of San Diego along walkways and viewpoints at the cliffs and beaches. They are registering their opposition by leaving mounds of rubbish and trash where trash cans once gallantly stood.
Nearly two weeks ago, the City of San Diego announced that it was permanently removing about two dozen trash receptacles from Ocean Beach to La Jolla. The cans removed were at walkways and viewpoints – not the actual beach and parks in between.
Park and Recreation Department director Stacey LoMedico announced that the staff that handled trash pickup was reduced as part of the spending cuts proposed by Mayor Jerry Sanders and okayed by the City Council to close a $43 million budget gap. The trash cans eliminated, between Point Loma Avenue in Ocean Beach and La Jolla Shores, save $125,000 a year, LoMedico told the press.
Meanwhile, beach residents are still delivering trash to the sites. Thanks to voiceofsan diego, the issue is kept alive. Maggie Allen, an OB resident, exclaimed to the voice “Just put a trash can out here for crying out loud.”

Sounds like your tongue is firmly planted in the side of your mouth. C’mon, people, don’t trash our cliffs and viewpoints! WTF!!!???
The issue is that the City of San Diego cannot service the containers because of the lack of funds. So who is going to do it? This is a perfect example of a community stepping in and taking things in their own hands. Maybe this is something the business district should take care of like they do for Newport Ave and why you are at why don’t we add recycling containers? The City is dropping programs like crazy instead of b*&%hing about it we need to work together as a community and figure somethings out. Who needs them anyways?
