The 5 Candidates Running for City Council District 2 and against the Incumbent – OB Town Council Forum

Frank Gormlie  April 26, 2018  5 Comments on The 5 Candidates Running for City Council District 2 and against the Incumbent – OB Town Council Forum

The big draw at Wednesday’s Ocean Beach Town Council meeting April 25th was the candidate forum – with candidates invited from two races: the District Attorney race and the District 2 City Council race. Only Genevieve Jones-Wright appeared for the DA campaign – Summer Stephens did not; and 5 of the candidates for D2 were on hand – but not incumbent Lorie Zapf.

DA Candidate Jones-Wright: “Break the cycle of crime”

“Many don’t trust the DA office,” she admitted – and her plans to rebuild the public’s trust is to “break the cycle of crime”;

Thanks to Virginia Wilson, New Trees Are Being Planted in Ocean Beach – and They’re Free

She would attend every community meeting she could, and get up – usually during the non-agenda public comment period – and in her quiet voice, urge her fellow OBceans to sign up for a free tree. Virginia Wilson of Save Peninsula Trees did this for months and months. She handed out forms, went door-to-door on weekends with friends enlisting residents to commit to the small tasks needed in order to receive a city tree for free.

And now it’s paying off. Trees have been planted on the 4500 blocks of Brighton and Muir Avenues.

JOY TO THE FISHES

By Steve Kowit

I hiked out to the end of Sunset Cliffs
& climbed to the breakwater,
sneakers strung over my shoulder
& a small collection of Zen poems
in my fist.
A minnow
that had sloshed out of someone’s bait bucket,
& that I came within an inch of stepping on,
convulsed in agony.
Delighted to assist,
I tossed it back into its ocean:

BREAKING NEWS: Dog Beach Beer Fest Is Cancelled

Frank Gormlie  April 25, 2018  5 Comments on BREAKING NEWS: Dog Beach Beer Fest Is Cancelled

It has just been confirmed to the OB Rag that this weekend’s Dog Beach Beer Fest has been cancelled. No reason was given.

According to radio station 94.9, they found out about the cancellation little after 12 noon today. Even though the radio station is one of the sponsors, it didn’t have the authority to cancel the fest scheduled for Sunday, April 29th – that decision was made by the promotional company.

That may be Eventbrite. Or is it Rock Star Beer Festival? Or Hodads? the other sponsors?

This all may be good news for some OBceans – those with concerns and questions about the event

Reader Rant: ‘How I Stopped Worrying and Came to Love Annoying My Short Term Vacation Rental Neighbor’

Editordude: The following is a compilation of a number of suggestions readers left in comments to our articles on short term vacation rentals.

Perhaps the solution to the mini-hotels and short term vacation rentals is for all permanent residents to collectively hit the STVR owners where it hurts the most – the pocket book. If you are a permanent OB resident living next to a full time vacation rental, make life miserable for the guests – in legal ways. Make it so they won’t want to come back and will encourage others not to.

Here are a number of suggestions on how to annoy

“Good morning!”

Long-time neighbor of Sunset Cliffs Natural Park David Kimball wakes up early in his house before the sun comes up and heads over to the demonstration garden adjacent to the Ladera Street parking lot. It is his favorite time of day.

“You couldn’t tear me away from here,” Kimball said.

Putting My Love in Play

Man holding a stained glass heart

Ernie McCray

By Ernie McCray

I recently wrote a rhyme about all the love I’ve enjoyed for 80 years, and now I’d like to share how I’ve put that love in play.

Regarding that, I have to say that loving has been easy for me because my life’s work has been dedicated to schools which are perfect places for spreading love.

And my intent, all along, has simply been to make my world more just for all human beings – beginning, in a moment in time, when I was in grade school myself.

It’s Been 25 Years for Dog Beach Dog Wash in Ocean Beach

Frank Gormlie  April 24, 2018  0 Comments on It’s Been 25 Years for Dog Beach Dog Wash in Ocean Beach

It’s been 25 years now – a quarter of a century – since Mindy Pellesier and Jane Donley opened up Dog Beach Dog Wash, in February 1993, on Voltaire Street. It was the first do-it-yourself dog wash in San Diego.

This year is also their 16th anniversary of sponsoring monthly Dog Beach clean-ups. And that’s where I recently ran into the couple – under the canopy of their clean-up HQ on the berm before Dog Beach last Saturday. They had teams out on the sand and along the River picking up litter – and other unmentionables.
