San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria continues to spin a misleading narrative about his background when he claims he’s “the son of a maid and a gardener” referring to jobs his parents had before he was born, giving the public the false impression he actually worked his way up from humble blue-collar beginnings to the height of political success.
Last week, during an interview with San Diego’s ABC Channel 10, Gloria said he learned the lesson of hard work as the “son of a maid and a gardener”, a consistent claim he has made since launching his political career nearly 18 years ago.

The people’s rare August 29 victory over greedy development was well-covered here – and virtually only here – in The OB Rag. The news of the winning effort to appeal approval of a project on Point Loma Avenue was in The Rag the same day.
The following day, Kate Callen provided a detailed report of the hearing in The Rag.
The purpose of this piece is to provide some additional information, including something about how this appeal process works.
A new 10News-San Diego Union-Tribune poll shows a fairly tight race between San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and Larry Turner, who is challenging the incumbent.
According to the poll, 37% of those asked said they’d vote for Gloria if they were filling out their ballot right now, while 33 % said they’d vote for Turner. Meanwhile, 28% indicated they were undecided.
When asked about Gloria’s job performance,
September 16th is that time of year when all Mexicans from around the world are celebrating Mexican Independence Day. On September 1810 Mexico began a 10-year war for independence with Spain and since the country gained its independence, things came a long way but violence is still too high. …
The traditional shout-out in Mexico for Mexican Independence Day is “Viva Mexico!” After the 1910 revolution that toppled dictator Porfirio Diaz, Mexicans were free to live in their own country, to have their own government and be able to shout out loud (or gritar) “Viva Mexico!”

This Tuesday, September 17, at 10:00, the City Council — the nine electeds who are each paid over six figures of your tax dollars — will once again be asked to take time from more important decisions to clean up another mess created by our six-figure paid city employees.
On the agenda is to legalize after the fact the violation of the terms of its decision to disestablish the Uptown Planners as an official community planning group. Those terms stated without ambiguity that any new group it appointed must conduct and conclude elections within 90 days of its appointment — or else that new group disqualified itself as incompetent.

San Diego’s Modern Times Beer, now owned by Maui Brewing Company, will soon close its flagship brewery and transition to contract brewing.
After a challenging few years following a devastating over-expansion, Modern Times announced to staff during a company wide meeting on Friday that the company has decided to shut down its original brewery in the Midway district of Point Loma, where it has operated since 2013. This move comes as part of a broader restructuring following a tumultuous period for the once-thriving San Diego craft brewery. At least 57 jobs will be cut as part of the impending closure.

When I was asked to be a judge for the OB Rag’s “Worst ADU in San Diego” contest, I figured I’d be looking at oversized buildings behind single family homes, like what I often see in my North Park neighborhood. I had no idea what I was in for.
Word of this contest must have spread, because entries came in from all over the city.
Towards the top of the “worst” list were the multi-unit ADUs (11, 12, 14 units). Clearly not a granny flat, unless Granny has lots of friends who like to sleep over.

The OB Rag announced the top 3 winners of its “Worst ADU (accessory dwelling unit)” contest, a tongue-in-cheek event meant to raise awareness about what critics deem predatory construction.
While it is legal for homeowners to construct an ADU on their property in San Diego County, some residents argue that these units sacrifice the comfort and aesthetics of neighborhoods.
