A new 10News-San Diego Union-Tribune poll shows a fairly tight race between San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria and Larry Turner, who is challenging the incumbent.
According to the poll, 37% of those asked said they’d vote for Gloria if they were filling out their ballot right now, while 33 % said they’d vote for Turner. Meanwhile, 28% indicated they were undecided.
When asked about Gloria’s job performance, 15% of respondents said they strongly approve of the job he’s doing, while 40% said they somewhat approve and 16% said they somewhat disapprove. To round this question out, 17% said they strongly disapprove of Gloria’s performance as mayor, while 12% reported they were unsure.
One of the questions was about whether life in San Diego has improved or not over the last four years: 49% of those asked said life in America’s Finest City has gotten worse, while 33% said it has stayed about the same.
Meanwhile, 52% of the people interviewed said the biggest issue facing San Diego is the cost of living and housing, while 27% said homelessness was the city’s biggest issue.
Another question pollsters posed to the respondents was about how much they worry about the cost of their own homes; 52% of those asked said they now worry more about their housing than they used to, while 34% said they worry the same amount. Only 12% of those questioned said they worry less about their housing cost.
On the topic of the city’s ban on homeless encampments, 35% of those asked said they strongly support it, while only 9% strongly oppose the measure.
When asked about crime in the city, 49% of respondents said crime is a minor problem, while 33% said it’s a major problem; 55% of those asked said they feel somewhat safe in the city.
A majority, 55%, of respondents said the city needs to do more to help the people and businesses flooded in January. Likewise, 63% of those asked said the city needs to do more to prepare for the next storm.
The vast majority of those asked, 76%, also said the city needs to do more to maintain roads and sidewalks.
To get the results of this poll, SurveyUSA interviewed 750 adults from the City of San Diego from Sept. 11, 2024, through Sept. 15, 2024.

So 40% of people think the city is worse under his leadership, and yet the same percentage somewhat approve of the job that he’s doing? And nearly 40% would vote for him again? This is not encouraging and I feel the city is doomed for round two with this guy.
We’ve been doomed ever since the Democratic establishment decided not to run anyone against him. (The Dem establishment has been looking more and more like the Republican establishment for a few years now.) The progressives in San Diego have been split over Gloria for 4 years now. The Rag and staff were called names by other progressives for supporting Gloria’s then-opponent Barbara Bry. Remember her?
And now Larry Turner — despite all his faults — has become the protest candidate for everybody who’s pissed off at Gloria & Co.
Nearly all my neighbors can’t stand him but said they’ll vote for him anyway.
For heavens sake, WHY???
Elizabeth, might be apathy.
Dear Mayor Gloria,
When 76% of your constituents say that the city needs to do more to maintain roads and sidewalks, I’d say that was a consensus, wouldn’t you? Yet what have you done? As one of those constituents who lives on one of those roads that is poorly maintained, I can tell you. NOTHING! That is precisely what you have done. I have complained to your office, as well as to the office of my council member, NOTHING has been done to resolve my concerns by either your office or the office of my council member. That is one of the many reason why I will be voting for Larry Turner. I suggest others do the same!
Well, not nothing. They created a marketing team to come up with the Sexy Streets program, and a data analyst to choose from a loooong list of streets that were already decades neglected. Then they threw some slurry on some, some surprise bike lane striping, and did photo ops demonstrating their excellent governance! Their PR and social media budget probably made up 40% of the road repair budget, but hey, that’s the price of looking sexy.
As well as his own manlipulated image.

Well, dems vote for dems and Gloria will win handily.
I won’t.
The main problem is Todd Gloria’s control of the local Dem party. Anyone qualified to run against him is too afraid of committing political suicide. Smart politicking I suppose for someone that values their political aspiriations over their constituents.
Many are willing to vote for just about anyone to break up his downtown club.
The presidential election is going to drive turnout among democrats. Given that Gloria is the dem endorsed candidate, his reelection is guaranteed.
37 to 33% is not a guarantee.
My street was completely repaved this year, and so were many others. I see fresh pavement all over town. To say NOTHING! has been done is simply not true. Meanwhile, what makes you think Turner will stumble on some previously undiscovered pot of money to hire more paving contractors? He has zero track record.
Don’t be fooled by the mayor’s “paving” projects. Most of it is just slurry seal, which is not paving. Faulconer crowed about the same thing but the vast majority of the projects were just seals. Now, they are trying a type of chip seal that looks like new pavement but it is not. It consists of a layer of sprayed oil, spreading 1/4″ rock chips, and another layer of oil. This is not structure, the whole treatment is less than 1/2″ of material.
I believe Larry Turner as mayor will have a different method of hiring contractors. They won’t have to be friends or donors to get the job done.
