Taking Drugs at the League of Women Voters Meeting

Judi Curry  October 8, 2013  1 Comment on Taking Drugs at the League of Women Voters Meeting

Topic – “How Safe Are Your Prescription Drugs and Medical Devices?

The Pt. Loma/Ocean Beach LWV held their second meeting Monday, October 7th at the Pt. Loma Library. The topic, which should be of interest to anyone taking prescription drugs, had a very small turnout. Perhaps it was the time change – 1:00pm instead of the regular meeting at 10:00am, but those of us in the audience heard from two panel speakers – Jean Willson and Shirley Walkoe – and the chair of the group, Nancy Witt.

A short DVD was shown re: the FDA and their responsibilities, and then 14 questions were addressed by Jean and Shirley. It was interesting to find out that Jean was a family doctor, practicing primarily in rural Iowa before practicing in Arizona and retiring. A female doctor in the1950’s was a rarity, and many males refused to see her unless they were very ill or injured.

Which is Worse – Holiday Catalogs or Requests for Monies to Fight the GOP House?

Judi Curry  October 1, 2013  2 Comments on Which is Worse – Holiday Catalogs or Requests for Monies to Fight the GOP House?

By Judi Curry

Several years ago, when first receiving holiday catalogs, I kept all of them to see how many I was sent in the six months prior to the actual holidays.  As I recall, it was over 160 and I felt sorry for my mail person who had to schlep all the catalogs from house to house for months. Since I am not a shopper, I never looked at those catalogs and finally threw them in my recycle bin just before the holidays.

PRIVACY? What Privacy?

Do you really think that you have privacy in your everyday doings? Do you really believe that no one knows when you are doing something you shouldn’t be doing? Do you really think that the good deeds you are doing are not noticed by someone? Do you have any awareness of just how “unprivate” your life is? Not only is “big brother” watching you, but so are his sisters and brothers, and it is a little unnerving.

Business Review: Beach Community Acupuncture

What does a porcupine, a pin cushion and a needle have in common?

That’s a pretty simple question. Of course you know the answer. But here is another question for you: What does a native of Maryland, a degree in English literature, and working in a non-profit domestic violence agency have in common? You don’t know the answer? Let me give you a hint by asking another question.

What does a Master’s fellowship in documentary film making, a developmental director for Alternet.org, and the Managing Director of “Baykids” have in common? A hint about “Baykids.” This is a group of hospitalized kids learning to express themselves through movie making. Does that help?

Hmmm. Well, how about a brief stint in Peace Corps in Vanuatu, Melanesia, a former pet care business owner or the mother of two. Does that help any?

Geez – maybe this will help. A Masters degree in Chinese Medicine; passage of the California acupuncture board exam in 2009, and the sole practitioner of the “Beach Community Acupuncture”.

Restaurant Review : Old Venice Restaurant

San Diego’s Restaurant Week unleashes the names of many restaurants that people do not try on a regular basis. Usually the cost is too high for the regular menu and some of these gems go untried by only those that can afford pricey meals. Barbara and I had made plans to go out to lunch as early as 3 weeks ago, but could never find a date that was agreeable to both of us.

Then Wham! Restaurant Week was upon us and one of the restaurants in the Pt. Loma/Ocean Beach area and a place she had been to last year appeared on the list. After checking the menu, she called me and suggested that we go to Old Venice for their $10 lunch special. It sounded like a good idea to me and she made reservations for us at 12:30 pm.

Although they take reservations at lunch, it was not needed.

Restaurant Review : the New Oscars of Ocean Beach

Judi Curry  September 18, 2013  6 Comments on Restaurant Review : the New Oscars of Ocean Beach

Oscars
5060 Newport Ave
Ocean Beach, Ca 92107

This review is a difficult one for me to write because in March of this year I reviewed the “Newport Avenue Yacht Club Restaurant” – virtually the same restaurant as Oscars – same owner, same address – and gave them an outstanding review. Shortly after I reviewed it – 10 days after they had opened – I was informed that it was no longer the Newport Avenue Club but was now called Oscars.

I have a new foreign language student living with me – Riccardo – and he mentioned to me that he had a delicious smoked fish taco at Oscars and wondered if I had ever eaten there. I should mention that he is only 19 and is unable to go to places like South Beach because of the age requirements. He told me the taco was one of the best he had ever had and I should try it.

So, I called my neighbor Jim and asked him if he would like to go with me to try out Oscars, particularly since he had been my partner when I went to OB Fishers. I knew he would accept and we went last Thursday, at 6:45pm.

My immediate response was that it hadn’t changed much since it was Newport Avenue Yacht Club. It looked a little more run-down; the menu board was the same black slate with writing on it but the offerings were a little more extensive. I did not see any fried fish or French fries on the menu, something I commented on in my original review.

Restaurant Review: OB Pho and Seafood

Judi Curry  September 16, 2013  18 Comments on Restaurant Review: OB Pho and Seafood

Hearing that “Ciao Bella”, the Italian restaurant that used to be on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach, now housed “OB Pho and Seafood”, I had to reread my review of Ciao Bella written many months ago; I had mentioned that they were serving to a full house; the food was fair, but too expensive for what was being served. My final line was that I probably would not be back.

Today, after “corresponding” with a reader of my articles on the OB RAG for over a year, Eric called and suggested that we meet. In discussing where that might be I mentioned that I had driven by OB Pho today and wondered if it was open yet. We decided to meet in front of the restaurant and if it was, we would eat there. If not, we would walk to somewhere else and have a meal there.

The Widder Curry Asks: “Are My On Line Dating Days Finally Over?”

Judi Curry  September 11, 2013  18 Comments on The Widder Curry Asks: “Are My On Line Dating Days Finally Over?”

People ask me if I am still meeting people on line. After all, I said I was going to stop months ago. There is no simple answer to the question so let me elaborate.

I am no longer paying a fee to meet on-line men. Sites like E-Harmony, Match.Com, Zoosk, Senior People Meet, Big and Beautiful Dating Network, Our Time, etc. all charge a monthly fee for their “services.” I don’t know what their services entail, even though at one time or another I belonged to all of the above. They don’t check on the character of the individual; they sometimes notify me that one of their “members” wants to chat – or meet me – but as far as anything substantial there is a real void. I figure over the past year I have paid out over $800 for these “on-line” clubs.

There are a few sites that do not charge – “Plenty of Fish” (POF); OK Cupid/Quiver, as well as a few others. I have not removed my name from these sites because I am still hopeful that I will meet someone that will take away the loneliness I am experiencing by being a 4 year widow. So, in answer to the question about whether I am still using on-line dating, the answer is “yes”, but qualified.

It isn’t often that I leave Ocean Beach to try a restaurant in Pacific Beach, but today was an exception. We ended up at Kono’s Surf Club in PB.

Before we left the house, I had done some minor research on Kono’s and suggested we try having breakfast there. (It was 2:15pm). Ro checked her “Iphone” and found they were open until 4:00pm – so away we went.

The Widder Curry: A Tribute To my Sister on Labor Day.

Judi Curry  September 2, 2013  10 Comments on The Widder Curry: A Tribute To my Sister on Labor Day.

Labor Day means a lot of different things to a lot of different people.

In my case, at the age of seven, the first time I knew about “Labor Day” was on September 2nd, 1946, because that was the day my mother went into labor with my sister, Andy. (Andrea Jane.)

The house was a flutter and my own governess was going to take care of my sister, leaving me for the first time in my life. I was going to be “a big girl” now, and I no longer needed to have Nanny Parsons monitor my every move. All of that was fine with me, except for one small thing – I did not know that my mother was pregnant. I do not want to say that she kept it a secret from me – but it was not talked about in my presence.

Editor: Ever since our Widder Curry posted an article with a photo taken showing her next to Bob Filner at a Point Loma Democratic Club party two days after his resignation, abc’s Channel 10 News has been searching for Judi, calling her “the mystery woman”. And they finally found her and conducted an interview with her featured under their headline:

SAN DIEGO – A woman who posed for a picture with a smiling, beer-holding Bob Filner just 48 hours after his resignation speech spoke to 10News about what led to the photo opportunity.

Staunch Democrat Judi Curry told 10News Filner was not in a celebratory mood and far from the outgoing, gregarious man she has supported for years.

Curry has an older photo of her standing with Filner posted next to her front door.

“They say, ‘Isn’t that Filner? Aren’t you going to take that down?’ I say eventually,” said Curry, a retired business owner and former San Diego school administrator.

Restaurant Review: OB Fisher’s SeaFood and Mexican Grill

In the past several weeks, I have been asked my no fewer than 4 people if I have tried the “O.B. Fisher’s”. I had not, but when Riccardo, my student from Italy told me he had a great fish taco there I decided it was time to try it out. After all, it is only steps from my house, and I have been to the “Pt. Loma Beach Café” for smoothies, so I called my neighbor Jim and asked him to try it out with me. (The Pt. Loma Beach Café is open in the mornings and early afternoon; the “OB Fisher’s” opens at 4:00pm in the same location.)
